Of all the skills Layla had (which, in retrospect, probably didn’t add up to be a whole lot), comforting people wasn’t one of them. After living at the orphanage and dealing with the kids she went to public school with, the young girl found that she didn’t care for most kids her age. Coming to Xavier’s was a last resort, a way to get away from further harassment and being singled out by her peers, but she hadn’t expected to grow close to any of these people. In fact, she was trying not to. But witnessing the little punk that pranked her and tried to call her out on her sarcasm go from over-excitable and mischievous to-- well-- the complete opposite, it kind of did something to her. Helping people wasn’t her thing, but maybe distracting them was. And, hey, if she got a chance to watch the kid fall on his face, she’d call the night as being decent. Deciding against going to the Stark school to try out the rails, she instead opted for heading out to one of the nearby parks. She gave Jamie her skateboard, not caring if he rode it to the park or just walked with it. Layla was already wearing her rollerblades, so she skated the entire way, keeping her pace the same as the boy’s so he wouldn’t be left in the dust. For the most part, Layla had kept quiet for their trip to the park. She only let the sound of the wheels against asphalt fill her ears. As they came closer to the destination, she realized she ought to say something at least. “You know that you’re gonna fall on your ass a lot and tear up your hands and knees, right?” Sure, she probably should’ve reminded him of this before they had set off for their destination, but Layla hadn’t wanted to give him the proper chance of chickening out, “I’m just sayin’, you’re probably going to sound like a little crybaby on the way home.” Layla was smiling, though. She knew she’d probably fall on her ass, too. It had been a while since she had done any rail grinds, falling was inevitable. |
