October 2018
Nathaniel cursed. He cursed himself, the realm, the Earth, and everything he could think of in-between. The wizard barged into his own office on Vernal Asgard and proceeded to violently clear off the surface of his desk with one exaggerated sweep of his arms. Then he cursed the items, especially the group that had chosen to break on impact. A clean surface to work with, Caltrops threw open the bottom drawer of his desk and snatched the empty bowl from within. He placed it dead center of his space, then examined his own shoulder. "Come on," he added with desperation. "Gotcha," he said then his fingers delicately picked a loose hair from his robe. "I know you're Eva's," he told the single strand, then dropped it into the bowl. Nathaniel produced a knife next, also from his desk, and quickly slashed the center of his left palm. He squeezed his fist over the mystical container, then mumbled some quick Latin. A wind blew through his windowless office which caused the flames on his candles to extinguish. "Eva?" Nathaniel asked the darkness. "Can you hear me?" Why had Nathaniel allowed her to meet the Americans without him? He should have seen this coming. |
Tired from her projected poise/contained rage, Zap was honestly startled when she felt Nate's presence in her mind. She stood, but not too suddenly, from where she'd been sitting on Jimmy (whether he'd liked it or not). They'd been there (Holland) for a few hours, and Charles had already reached out to them via Minor and the astral plane. She should've figured Nate was bound to get himself involved, even if Troy and Qiana delivered her wishes in kind. Her hand moved back for Jimmy to remain seated (in case he'd woken up) and she moved back to sit opposite his chair on the uncomfortable sofa they'd been gifted. She placed her head in her hands and focused on Nate's outreached voice. "Jimmy and I are okay." She exhaled a breath she hadn't been aware she'd been holding. "I'm okay. You sound stressed out," she said aloud, this time with a laugh in her voice. "Have you seen Mateo? How is he?" Her telepathic, astrally-inclined son was no wolf to have the sheep's wool blind him. There would be no hiding her current state from him. "Are... you okay?" |
Nathaniel exhaled for several seconds when Eva's voice echoed through his skull. Thank everyone's lord... "Stressed?" he answered with a laugh, the latter only possible because of her admission that she was okay. "You know, a little worried about my job security... my résumé is in shambles," he told her before he switched topics to Mateo. "He's climbing the walls," no point in lying. "But Brayden's with him, he'll keep his spirits up," their boys were near inseparable, were the roles reversed that knowledge would have eased Nate's worries. "Eva," he paused to collect himself. "I'm sorry I'm not with you, that should be me and not Jimmy," her chief adviser told her. "I wasn't even allowed to travel to Holland," he nearly spat. "I was deemed 'too valuable'," he explained bitterly. "Are you really okay?" |
"If something happened to me, you know Thor wouldn't toss you out," she confirmed, even though he'd been joking. She'd seen to it, as a matter of fact. "Good," her son had a lovely distraction. If she'd have thought Minor wasn't especially useful for her safety, currently, she would've sent the bear to play with Pup so she could interact with Mateo. Alas... "It should be no one," Zap argued Nate's selfless (or self-important?) point. "Yet here we are. I'm glad I'm with someone I have a connection with, and who knows me so well..." again, this was outloud, so if Jimmy overheard, she was going to have to listen to him nagging her about how much she loved him. C'est la vie. Long story short, she was not-so-cleverly telling Nate she had the next best thing to him with her. "I really am," okay. "Tad bit enraged. And the food here sucks. Get me a chili-cheese dog lined up? With curly fries. You know how much I love potatoes." |
"If anything any more unpleasant than this happens to you, my retention here won't be an issue," Nate teased the extinction-level event Earth would have to contend with should a hair on a Eva's head be harmed. "Yes, I suppose J'moy have their purposes," he admitted, unable to show his actual gratitude at Jimmy's presence - it was against his vibe. "I've already told Charlotte to have your favorites ready," he smirked, then quickly used his phone to do just that... "It's a lucky thing you found a good ol' Idaho boy to look after you," he said with a nervous chuckle. "Hey," Nathaniel began with a more serious tone. "This wasn't part of the deal, when I told you how much I... wanted to work for you," he paused. "You being in danger and us being separated isn't kosher." The useless Nate explained. |
"Okay," Zap said, dismissively. But really, Thor's wrath alone seemed to have already caused a breeze in cloudy Holland. So she didn't want to picture what Mr. Zale might add to that fire. Good ol' boy. "It isn't luck that I lasso'd you in. You know that, right? I snickerdoodled right into your good graces. You thought it was all your idea to Yoda me." Zap grinned at no one. Lotte, the angel, Eva thought of the cook. Nate was probably texting her now, the almost-queen laughed internally. He wasn't that on top of things. But he spoke again and this time with 'real talk'. She sighed, hands still cradling her face to focus her concentration. "We should only be in dangerous situations if we're back to back? I see," she teased him. But really, she felt similarly. She understood his frustration. "You know what is kosher?" |
"They had chocolate," he answered without a real excuse for falling into lessons with Eva. "Exactly," Nathaniel agreed with her comment about dangerous situations. "What's kosher?" he asked only playfully annoyed. "Latkes?" he guessed, no probably not. "That's not what you were going to say... did I just potato myself?" he questioned exasperated, it didn't matter. "When you get back..." he spoke positively because he knew it was going to happen. "We're going to work on teleportation," he told her with all seriousness. "I just needed to hear your voice, make sure you were okay," he needlessly justified his mystical phone call. "If anything happens... you can reach me," Nathaniel advised her. "Thor didn't tell anybody what he has planned, just be careful, please," Nate attempted not to plead but failed. "I'll be here, with chili dogs, when you get back." |
"My hot dogs are kosher." They were vegan. At least she'd made him laugh, in a round-about way. "Yes; you just potatoed yourself into a casserole, sir." Latkes, classic. That would've been funny. Memory bank. "I'll teleport after I deliver," she reminded him - she wasn't just lugging herself around through the dimensions... pregnant teleporting wasn't for a novice. Not that she didn't think she could handle it. Oh, right, Nate was straining to speak to her - because of an actual distance, not a metaphoric one that she was worrying about prematurely. "I'll let you know. But nothing is going to happen." Big sigh. "Try to relax. And tell Logan, if you see him before I do, that he's not invited to chili dogs." He'd jumped on an X-Jet knowing full well she didn't want to make things an even bigger mess. Stubborn cigar jockey. |
