"Nate?" So it was 3:15am on the floating fortress that was Vernal Asgard. When had that stopped her interrupting someone's sleep? Zap's voice grew more harsh and slightly louder: "Nate!" Ugh. She kicked his chair. "You drooled a little on your book," she accused and moved to sit down next to him, fully prepared to ignore drool and morning breath and eye boogers, should they be present. "Thor wants me to be the queen - now. Please have a different reaction than my father did." She recalled silently, 'No shit, kiddo. He's a king and you're carrying his prince. What did you think was going to happen?'. Not paraphrased. "What am I supposed to do with a realm?!" she asked, still whispering a bit roughly. Her nostrils flared. "I make spare body parts in a rental space for a living..." She was more mad scientist than ruler. Or, she was. Her tech days had gone by the wayside. Here was the kicker: "He wants me to be the Goddess of Magic." None of this was really a surprise, but the time had come to follow through on promises made. Queen and goddess seemed a lot more difficult than the papers they'd signed back in July to be married, granting Thor's citizenship. |
Nathaniel didn't drool, at least that's what he told himself after Eva had awoken him. The dimly lit room came into focus, as did the wet spot on his book, and the sensation of moisture on his face. Okay, perhaps he'd drooled, this once, but that wasn't important now. All of |
Christ in heaven. No, he wasn't reacting like her dad. He was reacting like the nerd he was. She didn't want a book, she wanted... Well, she wasn't sure what she wanted. A slap in the face with reality? Eva didn't want to fly off the handle or spin out of control. Nate had been a fairly dependable rock (and hard place) for her. "It isn't bad," she finally got around to answering, "it's just a lot." She was prepared for a lot... mostly the goddess part. She could handle whatever bolts the Allfather hurled at her. Except a wedding. "I have no frame of reference for if there's been a queen of Asgard who wasn't the wife of the king of Asgard since there's only ever been one king." She leaned forward on the table that was in front of them, then closed Nate's drool book and pushed it further from the pair. "That's the intimidating part. And you, being a divorced single mother, I thought might have some insight." She was joking, of course, but she was falling short on oxygen and needed a breath of levity. |
"I'd do anything for that boy," Nathaniel inserted his knuckle between his teeth and clenched when he thought about all his sacrifices as a divorced single mother. Anyway. "It's a metric fuck-ton," he added quite elegantly. "But you're Evangeline Fuckin' Silvercloud and you've got a secret weapon," Caltrops said unable to hide his smirk. "Afterall, the Queen of Asgard will need a chief adviser," he deduced with a well placed hand gesture. "And with all due respect to the last queen, Asgard was already built when she moved in," Nate threw light shade, but it was all for Eva's benefit. "Be nervous," he told her, "be terrified if you need to be, but tell me you want this and I'll make sure you're the best queen Asgard's ever seen," he promised, his hand suddenly interlocked with Eva's warm digits. |
"Alright, Nathaniel Secret-Weapon Zale, you want to advise?" she asked, purposely distracting herself from the sentiment and passion Nate had displayed in his offer to aid her bed the best of the best. She squeezed his fingerlings and then slipped her hand free again. "You've earned it, I'd say. I know; I rubbed your lamp, I brought you here..." She smirked. However... her issue still loomed ahead of her. "You're excited about this," she began, accusingly, "aren't you?" It was the livliest she'd seen Nate's eyes in weeks. Okay, maybe ever. Zap sighed out with purpose. "One step at a time." A wee bolt popped from her hand to the one of Nate's she'd released. "Oh, and Goddess of Lightning." Pbbbbt. "One step at a time. Goddess... then... wife." Gulp. Her track record had gone mostly kept from Nate. Perhaps that's where he'd gotten lost. "It isn't Thor, it's me. I never really wanted-" to feel trapped. Was it hot? She was stuffy. The window on the far side of the study opened letting in early fall night air. |
"You're excited about this, aren't you?" "What?" Nathaniel feigned ignorance, which wasn't easy for him. "No," he said unconvincingly. "For you," he added but couldn't completely commit to the act. "Okay fine, I'm excited," he admitted then ignored the electricity shared between them - because it was sexy and he'd made it a point to avoid all the sexy things Eva did. "Good Aladdin reference," ten imaginary points, "but I was thinking a different bit, Jasmine," Nate explained when he pulled his drool book back. "I can show you the world," he said and furiously flipped through the pages. "Here," he exclaimed and his fingers struck the page. "The record of every bestowal given out by Odin. See what's not on here, Midgardians. You've earned this," he told her with that fire in his eyes that only she was able to stoke. "And if you change your mind about the wife thing... I'll help you get outta that too," Nathaniel offered with a smirk. |
"No Midgardians?" Not surprised. Eva leaned in. "Doesn't that mean it could backfire?" she half-joked. Oh god, what if it backfired? Shake it off. It would be fine. She could feel it in her core. Again, the goddess part wasn't her concern. "Anyway, this isn't a bestowal from Odin. This is from my boyfriend," she pointed out, honestly. There was a difference. "But I see your point," she wouldn't argue her worthiness with Caltrops then and there. She didn't need any man to tell her she was everything. Finger snaps. Zap leaned back in her chair and let her knees part, body finally unclenching. "Thank you for humoring me, Potato. You should start charging me access to this ledge you keep talking me down from," the mystic laughed. The cool breeze from the window washed over her and she leaned her head back. "I think I worried myself into a nap." Nate, though, was probably never going to sleep again. Eva's eyes closed and she reached out her hand to bump Nate's shoulder. "Pass the drool book?" |
"It's surprisingly comfortable," Nate confirmed when she referenced what they were never to mention again. Of course Eva had seen his point, like most things, Nathaniel was correct. This was the greatest opportunity in the history of opportunities and in was an impossibility Zap would fail. Especially with his guidance, which he'd forcefully volunteered. Hand of the Queen? He mused and ignored her 'boyfriend' comment while Eva looked drowsy. Nathaniel stood and causally conjured a pillow and blanket from the shadows of his chamber. He tossed the pillow on the end of a padded couch they'd sat near and coaxed Eva to lay. The blanket covered her perfectly with minimal effort from Nathaniel and the ambient light dimmed even lower. "Enjoy your nap," Nate instructed her - she'd need her rest. |
