"I feel like a mob driver," Dave commented from the driver's seat of the rather swanky Xavier-issued town-car, which included Eva in the back seat. "I mean, I like it." He clarified with a smile pointed toward the mob-wife on the bench seat. They were parked, in a sparsely populated parking lot behind the Westchester County lockup, only a few hours after David had used Kiernan as his telepathic weapon against a judge. Thankfully for counselor Long, the so-called "honorable" Judge Korman had several skeletons in his closet that he'd rather not see come to light. Zero was able persuade the judge to change his earlier ruling, instead of just using Kiernan to puppet his body completely.
David spied activity beyond the chain link fences which caused the lawyer to slowly exit the vehicle. Before he closed the door behind him, he turned to Eva, still inside. "You should wait, surprise him." He advised with a smirk, then shut the door behind him. Dave casually walked toward the gate and buttoned his suit jacket while he approached the threshold between freedom and incarceration. He noticed a disheveled but relatively intact Logan with a pair of deputies on his flanks. The four men met at the gate, but the deputies stopped while Wolverine continued toward the lawyer. "In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. All they found of him was a muddy set of prison clothes..." Dave did his best Morgan Freeman impression for a seemingly unimpressed Logan.
"Shut the hell up," Logan told his lawyer, even while the corners of his lips curved up into a smile. Freedom felt good, but what felt better was the scent that lingered on Dave's suit and the silhouette in the back of Dave's car. "She wanted to come along?"
"Yup," Dave answered while he walked behind Logan, back toward the car. "Couldn't have kept her away."
Logan was glad Dave was behind him now; the feral mutant's grin would have been far too much of a tell for anyone else to have seen. "Do me a favor. Just take us straight to the airport."
"Alright, and then you can explain to Erik where all the school's bail money went." Dave reminded Logan - he may have been out, but he was far from home free. Zero paused when he heard someone approaching him from behind. One of the deputies had returned with an envelope in his hand.
"This is for your client, he left it." The officer explained, handed the letter to Dave, then turned back toward the prison.
Dave gave Logan an inquisitive look, while Wolverine merely shrugged his shoulders. The pair stood about ten feet from each other, Logan still walking with a purpose toward the car. Dave's curiosity got the better of him. He opened the unsealed envelope which contained one folded piece of paper. He unfolded it and was baffled by its contents. "Is this a joke?"
Logan turned, clearly annoyed by whatever David was going on about. "What?" But upon seeing the paper in Dave's hands he realized the message had been spelled out in cut-out magazine print.
"It says, 'You cheated. So now you have to pay'. What is this?" Dave asked, confused as to what the hell was going on.
Logan's stomach sunk to his boots. Not only was he once again reminded he was being manipulated by someone, but he noticed a bright red dot appear on Dave's chest. "Down!" Logan yelled while his feet simultaneously lurched toward Zero. His jacket was abandoned in a mad dash toward the other man, and far in the distance, Logan heard the first few pops. Wolverine dove onto Dave just in time to feel the familiar but entirely loathsome sensation of bullets colliding with his back. Two, then a third... followed quickly by a fourth and a fifth. When Logan's body finally fell to the ground, he attempted to cover as much as Dave's as possible. The pain tore through Logan, but his desire to keep Zero safe persevered his ability to cope. He glanced at the thin gap between their bodies and panicked when he noticed David's clean white shirt stained bright red. At least one of the high powered rounds had cleared Logan's body completely and entered Dave's midsection. The lawyer seemed entirely unaware until he attempted to move. Wolverine forced his body up onto his knees and turned in the direction of the gunfire - with nothing but treeline in sight. Logan's militarily-trained brain overrode his system, and despite his lack of cover, he knew he needed to get Dave and Eva out of harm's way. He scooped Dave up from the ground, and ran at full speed, crouched, to the car. "Get us out of here!" Logan yelled while he prayed to god Eva wouldn't leave the safety of the bulletproof town car. The car he and Dave had just landed in a heap alongside.
