Russ switched on the radio via the buttons on his steering wheel. The normal presets were all shot, he'd driven well passed the range for his typical stations. So his thumb instructed the radio to scan. The first signal to come in clear had a country twang to it. The second, was on commercial. The third, brought a familiar beat and the empath stopped the station jumping feature.
"You know he attached two bass strings to his guitar to play this bass line and the guitar riff." Lenny told Russ from the passenger seat. "Jack White created the greatest bass line... without a bass guitar." Her smirk curved into something wicked, which gave Russ pause.
"Why does that make you happy?" Russ inquired, while his fingers tapped along to the addicting beat.
"Just a troll move. It'd be like if you entered a poker tournament, doc." Her feet kept time with the song from on top of the dash. "Be pretty easy to tell if the professional players were bluffin', wouldn't it? Just like it was easy for a great guitarist to make every bassist look lazy."
He started to rebut, then Russ realized they reached their highway exit. Urge piloted his car from the lonely Canadian interstate... inter-province? And they entered a sleepy suburb, whose lawns were already blanketed in a soft layer of pearly white snow. "What was the address again?"
"It's the one on the left, doc." Lenny informed him and pointed to the completely average looking family home.
"Seems like an odd place." Russ commented, then pulled into the driveway. He shut off the ignition and watched the house for a moment. Nothing felt out of place - just a sleepy little house, in a sleepy little hamlet. He opened his door and snatched the brief case from behind his driver’s side seat. The car door closed and the empath walked to the front door. He rang the bell, but no one answered. He looked to Lenny, who'd also exited the vehicle, and gestured to the doorknob. Russ turned the chilly brass thing and it opened. The foyer matched the outside, lovely - quaint with an endearing lived-in vibe. But when Russ walked into the main room of the house, it told a different story. Blood covered the walls, the furniture was torn and tossed about like a child had thrown a tantrum. Urge covered his nose with his jacket sleeve; the smell....
"Looks like someone had one hell of a party." The brunette woman said, while she walked around the living room. "But look how high these ceilings are." She commented, from atop the coffee table.
Urge scolded her with his eyes, but refrained from speaking, mostly because he felt a presence approach him from behind. The larger thing wrapped a massive hand around Urge's neck from behind - but before he could attack, Russ rendered the mutant powerless. He ducked out from the grasp of the other man, who was currently a slobbering zombie of a person. "You weren't kidding." He told Lenny, at the sight of the man.
"Nope." She confirmed with a smile. "Six and a half feet of pure Canadian crazy." She circled the feral mutant, even poked his temple with her index finger. "He likes to break into houses, kill the people who live there, stay a while, then blow town before anyone knows he's here."
"I've seen him before." Russ was familiar with Sabretooth, he just didn't know about his new habit. "Guess we should do what we came here to do." Urge set the briefcase down and popped the latches open. He removed the electronic anklet and then fastened it around Sabretooth's right ankle. With that on, no one would be able to detect him. "They wouldn't understand, the others. He deserves the chance to be saved just like all the other mutants." He told Lenny, the only one who understood him.
"I get it, doc." Lenny agreed with a sincere nod. "Now, just like we practiced."
Russ placed his hand on Victor's forehead and closed his own eyes. He concentrated on Sabretooth's mind, just like he'd practiced. After a moment, Victor's eyes opened. And Russ took a step back, but not out of fear. "Do you understand?" He asked, and Sabretooth nodded then walked slowly from the house - right out of the front door. Russ allowed a sigh of relief to escape his lungs and he turned to Lenny, wide smile on his face.
"Feels good, doesn't it?" She responded, then hopped off the half-broken coffee table. "I'm going to raid the fridge. Do you smell Cheetos?"
