All common sense said he shouldn't have gotten this far along.
All the doctors had recommended an abortion. Any sane person would have. Both of his parents had refused, and though no one wanted to listen, they had no choice. They were an accused violent vigilante and a woman diagnosed with insanity, but without their consent, he lived.
It was hellish. His father came around more and more, even after the doctors had concluded that his presence was only harming his mother's fragile mental state. Her progress was slow, her manic episodes frequent. They worried that the fear toxin in her blood would get her her baby, but she wouldn't let them test it. Too paranoid that they would take him away the second she let them that close.
When he was big enough to move, he was constantly twisting and kicking in what certainly felt like pain. His mother pushed people away, insisted that he was just sensitive, stop talking to her, he could hear too much already.
They didn't know she was in labor until she screamed---and when her water broke. She gave birth after five hours of crying and pushing and snapping at the doctors. Her husband was the only person in the room she wasn't threatening to kill, clinging to him even as he cringed in pain. The scent of blood and all the noise only upset her more, but as soon as the baby was out, she cried even harder.
"Where is he?" she choked. "I need him, where is he. I need him right now, I need---"
"Milla. Milla, shh." Her husband cradled her close, holding her a bit too roughly when she tried to push him away. "He's here, can't you hear him?"
The baby cried the moment he was able, and Milla raised her head when she heard the crying coming closer. She nearly smacked the doctor who touched her arm, before her husband reached out and stopped her and the doctor explained, "I have your baby. It's a boy---"
"I know it's a boy," Milla snapped. "I need him."
Reluctantly, the doctor settled the crying baby in her arms. Milla, normally so hostile and violent with the nurses and doctors who treated her, was so gentle and cautious with her baby that they were wondering if the mood would break, if she would snap at any moment. But she held him, still crying, cradling his head by her breast.
"Jack," she muttered, rocking him gently. "Shh. Hush, baby, you're safe here. You're safe."
"Mil---" Her husband tried to lean in and she nudged him back with an elbow in his chest. He frowned, obviously hurt but afraid to push it and provoke her. "Milla."
"You're safe here," Milla breathed, ignoring him. "I've got you now, you're safe."
