Remus at the Ministry - complete
Who: Remus Lupin
Where: The Ministry then later Remus' cottage in Wales
When: Tuesday February 12th, 1999, midmorning to noon.
Rating: PG
Remus felt guilty. More guilty that usual, since that to a certain degree had been his constant state of mind since ... well, for a long time. But right now it was worse.
He wasn't divorced from Dora.
Yet, he'd slept with Severus Snape (which was still baffling).
Which meant, he'd committed adultery.
He might've left Dora and they might have agreed on getting a divorce, but that didn't mean they weren't married still. Remus had not even dared mention this to Severus, even less so how guilty he felt. He didn't regret it at all, he couldn't. But he still couldn't shake that black conscience that was niggling at the back of his mind constantly.
However, now it was time to change that. He'd been stalling for too long, which was the only word for what he'd been doing. He knew it was the right thing to do, but to take that final step and set the actual legal divorce into action seemed so ... big, and final. A big and final pain he was going to inflict on not only Dora, because she wasn't the only one affected by this. But also Teddy. Remus was taking a future where his mum and dad were living together, being there for Teddy together, away from his son. And that was almost the worst thing. Remus had missed his mother bitterly when he grew up - he still did, naturally - and felt it had deprived him of something vital that she wasn't there. And now he was doing the same, voluntarily. Mum hadn't had that choice, Fenrir had made it for her.
Remus entered the Ministry through the visitors entrance and signed in to get his visitors badge. He thought he saw a glint of recognition in the reception witch's eyes, but she didn't say anything. He was certain though, at once as he handed in his information in order to get the papers at the proper department, the glint in the person's gaze wouldn't only hold recognition. Merlin, he didn't want to be here.
Together with several Ministry workers, Remus stepped into a lift that would get him to his destination. He moved to the back and kept his eyes on the display that showed where they were, occasionally glancing at the small paper-planes, paper-cranes and whatever paper figures ministry workers liked to create, zooming around over them.
This process could only be painful, for both of them. He had no idea how long it would take or what he would need to do.
OOC - the link leads to a website concerning the legal process of a marriage in the Muggle world. Some of it probably applies for the Wizarding world, so it's just a matter of deciding which parts.
