[ It's the final day. Sector 0 is all that remains. Where will you go from here? What will you do, now that your sentence has finished? ]

This is a weird day and Chuck can't help but feel torn about it. Yes, it's going to be wonderful to go back home with Ton, reclaim her life, reconnect with her aunts and get started on making some kids. On the other hand, there's a good chance she'll be leaving some really wonderful adoptive kids behind, and even more so she's guaranteed to lose the prison family she's found along the way. So many are already gone, and now it seems unavoidable that she'll never see them again.

It's unusual to see Chuck's relentless enthusiasm dampened, but that's exactly what she is today - damp. Soggy, even, waterlogged in her soul. She slides up to him in an unguarded moment, hooking an arm around his.

"Weird, huh? We haven't even been here a year and it still feels like forever."

He glances down at her as he feels her arm slide through his, taking in her unusual melancholy, and gives her arm a little squeeze.

"They flung a lot at us in that time. It does make it feel longer," he says, and gives her a gentle look. "Are you okay?"

"Mhm." She nods. "It's just a lot, you know? I'm ready to go home, get on with my life - but this has been my life for a really long time. There's a lot I can't take with me."

Like, perhaps, the no-longer-quite-a-puppy anxiously pressing himself against her leg.

"Yeah, I know." With a sad smile, he reaches down to fondle the puppy's ears. "Lots we're going to be leaving behind - but oh, it is going to be a relief not to have to wonder what weirdness we're going to be facing every other day or so!"

He gives her a sideways look. "So, you're taking Ton home with you? How's that going to do down with Ned?"

"Yeah? From what I recall, we both face plenty of weirdness back home too."

A different brand, perhaps, but weird nonetheless. Then again, dealing with strange murders will practically be a comfort after all the dinosaurs and flooding.

"And Ned is just going to have to learn to live with it. I'm sure he'll be upset, but honestly it's not my job to tip-toe around his fragile emotions and put my life on hold just because he can't handle the pressure."

So there.

"Well yeah, there is that, I guess," he admits wryly - and then grins widely.

"Heh, you go, girl! That is so good to hear!" As he pulls her into a big, somewhat crushing hug.

"Eep!"

She squeals a little at the hug, but it's nice to have his approval. Honestly, if there's one thing Jack has done for her, it's teaching her to stand up for herself and not bend to other people's weaknesses just because it's easier than asking them to man up.

"I'm going to miss you. You better come visit!"

They've been good for each other. She's been probably the single most effective voice encouraging him to listen to others and see things from their point of view, and look what that's achieved!

"I'm going to miss you too," he says, muffled in her hair. "And damn straight I'm going to visit. You don't get rid of your big brother that easily!"

"Good, because before you know it you'll have a whole litter of nieces and nephews to hang out with."

She's been putting her life on hold for so long, you bet she'll hit the ground running as soon as she comes back home. Meet her aunts, introduce Ton to everyone, figure out a way to make a living (her least concern) and maybe find a little house in Coeur d'Coeurs that they can fill with kids.
