Day 440 / Action / Closed and open
Closed to Spike

He spoke to both Spike and Ianto separately yesterday and was assured that Spike was handling it all and not to worry. He tried, but he can't honestly say he slept very well, and it's still early when he gives up altogether and slips along to Spike's apartment – early enough that Spike might not even have slept yet at all if he's stayed up watching over a distraught Ianto.

He knocks on the door softly so as not to wake Ianto if he has managed to sleep, knowing that Spike's superior hearing will catch it. "Spike? Can I come in?"

Closed to Ianto

Later in the day, he takes over custody of Ianto so Spike can go off and do what he needs to do. He keeps it together well enough while Spike's there, because there still seems to be something of a need to keep a brave face on in front of Spike, but as soon as the door shuts behind Spike he can't stop himself pulling Ianto tightly into his arms. "I was worried about you."

Open

Tyki's back, and he can't help but be worried by that, but he's not going to let it stop him going about his daily business either. Especially since apparently tomorrow they're going to lose their beach for some indefinite time period, so he's damn well going to make the most of it while it's still there! He spends extra long this morning swimming, and then lying on the sand under the fake sun to dry off, enjoying its rays while he can. (Sure, it's the same sun in the rest of the dome, but it's the bit about being beside the sea that he enjoys, hearing the lap of the waves, smelling the salt in the air, feeling the spray on his skin.)

Later in the day, he goes along to Captain Jack's Exotic Emporium and sends away the helpful bot who minds the store when he's not there. He gazes round at all the stock, wondering if all this will be the next to go, right after he's got it all set up just the way he wanted it.

Towards the end of the day (but before he takes Ianto home) he can be found patrolling through Sectors 1 and 5, looking for anyone still remaining there, to encourage them to get out while they still can.

It's true that he hasn't slept yet. He's tried and failed to get into a more normal day rhythm for humans, but it's still rare that he's still awake by the time the sun goes up. It seemed important to keep watch today even though he has no reason to think Tyki will come for Ianto, especially not seek him out in Spike's apartment. It's more for Ianto's sake.

That said, the light knock on the door still puts him on edge, muscles tense as he quietly moves over to open the door. There's visible relief when he recognizes Jack's voice and he cracks the door open, ushering him in.

"Quiet. He's asleep."

"Yeah? Oh, that's good," he admits with some relief as he slips in past the door. If Ianto's been able to sleep at all, that has to be a good sign.

He makes sure the door's well and truly closed behind him. He doesn't really think Tyki will come for Ianto here either, but he's not taking any risks.

"How's he been?"

If there's one place Spike's sure Tyki won't come into, it's this place. They have an agreement, a bond no matter how frayed it is at this point and he has to rely on that for a little longer. At least until after tonight, where he might know more about exactly where they stand.

"About as well as you'd expect." He fakes a sigh, nods for Jack to follow him out into the kitchen so he can smoke without waking Ianto. "Coffee?"

He follows Spike, glancing towards the door of the bedroom as he goes but loathe to disturb Ianto since he has actually managed to get some rest.

"Coffee sounds good!" he agrees, even managing a hint of a smile because hey, he's Jack - coffee always sounds good!

And then, because there's too much weighing on his mind to beat about the bush for long, he goes right for it. "You spoke to Tyki, right?" Tyki had pretty much taunted him about it, after all. "What's your assessment of him? Is he actually a danger or are we all just over-reacting?"

Jack probably shouldn't get his hopes up — Spike knows how to make coffee, he's done it for Ianto on the rare occasion at the Shack and before that he'd brew a pot for Rose from time to time, but he doesn't touch the stuff himself. It'll be decent, but probably nowhere near the high standards Jack is used to.

"Don't think it'd hurt to keep an eye on him-" Spike starts while he fiddles with the coffee maker. "-but I don't think he's in any position to hurt anyone. Not yet, anyway."

Turning, he gives Jack a look. What happened to Tyki was eerily similar what happened to Spike, so of course there's sympathy. They were close, once. May even be close still, even if things have changed drastically.

"You lot did a right number on him. You know that, right?"

Oh, he's not expecting Ianto-standard coffee, but at this stage in the morning, and after a night like that, any coffee will do!

A trickle of relief flows through him as Spike gives his assessment, because if there's anyone here who knows Tyki well, it's Spike. Then he goes still at the look on Spike's face as he turns to him, not quite sure what he's seeing. In some ways, it's like stepping back in time to after the re-souling and Spike's bitter accusations every time they met.

He deliberately takes a moment before he answers, because he doesn't want to fight with Spike over this but honestly, his response isn't ever really likely to change, just as his response to the accusations about the re-souling never have. He regrets the suffering he caused - a lot more than he did to begin with - but he did what he had to do, and he'd do it again if he had to.

And with Tyki, there's a hell of a lot less regret. As far as he's seen, Tyki has no redeeming features, and what he did was a hell of a lot worse than what Spike did.

"You know we did the only thing we could," he says carefully. "What we had to, to keep people safe. We didn't do it to cause him suffering but... you can't blame me if I'm not sorry that he is."

That's the thing, isn't it — as far as he's seen. Spike fakes a sigh, leaning back against the counter while the coffee brews and lights himself a cigarette. His tone is even, as un-accusatory as he can make it right now.

"Jack... I'm not going to fight you on this. We've been over it to death already."

He takes a drag, clearly ramping up to something and it's not even about wanting regrets - it wasn't ever about that - but rather that he needs people to understand what they did so they don't go into it blindly again. He got lucky, it worked out for him, but without Ianto there to take pity on him? He'd be right where Tyki is right now.

"He's come back once before, you know. Same day that lit'le piemaker got married. I saw him then, saw what you left him as... a mortal man, weighed down by regret and slowly being eaten up from the inside by his own lit'le butterflies." A look at that, sharp. "You know about the Tease? You know what they do?"

As far as he's seen, yeah - and the thing is, he does tend to bring out the worst in people like Tyki, with his belligerent, all guns blazing approach. Just as he did with Spike, at the time. Unfortunately, he has yet to learn that about himself.

He's grateful to Spike, though, for letting that slide and not forcing them both to rehash the same old arguments again, and he nods, giving him half a smile, and waits for the rest of it.

And does his best to actually listen, as well as he can. He has at least got a little better at that, lately, and it's obvious this is important to Spike. "Why don't you tell me?" he suggests, because frankly he was too furious with Tyki at the time to really get a feel for all this and left a lot of the responsibility of understanding it all to Kitty, who had far more experience of Tyki and the peculiarities of his condition.

"They eat." he responds with emphasis, trying to encompass the whole itching, chittering, gnawing quality of it. "When he had his Noah they wouldn't touch him, just lived inside his body. Without it... well. Only one way out, isn't there?"

Never mind that he helped Tyki with that the last time, in a decisive bite-come-improvised-tracheotomy, but Jack doesn't need to know that. Spike is so goddamn sure that Tyki won't actually do anything and this is his attempt at bringing that point home, to calm people down but just as much to give Tyki some space. Clashing right now would be cruel and unnecessary — who would've ever guessed that he'd resort to diplomacy?

"So that's where we're at. He's just a bloke, Jack. Not in any state to harm a flea, let alone kill anyone."

That's... a bit more than he was expecting, to be honest, and it does make him pause for a minute. He swallows.

"I'm sorry," he says eventually. "That sounds like hell. I didn't realise it would be quite that bad."

He wonders if Kitty knew; knows that they'd still had to go ahead with it anyway because they hadn't been able to find a more humane way to deal with him. He knows what it's like living with that kind of knowledge. Living with the consequences of what you've had to do to others is all a part of the job, where they're concerned.

He looks at Spike, jaw tightening as he thinks back to his video call with Tyki. "So why all the threats and bluster yesterday, then? He didn't sound like someone who wouldn't harm a flea!"

"Come on, Jack. Can't you figure that one out?"

He takes a moment to stub out the cigarette in a conveniently placed ashtray (he really smokes way too much in the kitchen these days) before fetching a much for Jack from one of the cupboards. Coffee's just about done.

"I would've done the same thing in his place. Put on a show, make people believe you still got it, maybe buy some time and space to get your feet back under you... and it worked, didn't it?"

"He could have just stayed in the background and no-one would have bothered him!" he points out. "Or - you know - if he was desperate for the attention, he could have made a broadcast about the fact that he was back but he wasn't a threat and, again, we'd have left him alone. Or maybe even gone out of our way to help him!"

Even he's not above doing that, if people actually elicit his sympathy rather than rubbing him the wrong way.

"Instead, he went out of his way to antagonise people, just like he used to!"

Spike really can't keep himself from laughing — as close as he and Jack have gotten in the past few months, some things never change like how he'll always think like a villain and Jack will never step out of his mould as a hero, as someone who will never be looked down on, who'll never be beneath.

"You really think that would've gone over well? You think he'd trust you enough to show vulnerability, let alone ask for help? Because when I was in his exact situation, that was the last thing I wanted."

You remember that, don't you? Not a lot would've had to change for him to still be where Tyki is, alone and miserable and drowning in regret. It's a goddamn miracle that Spike's as well adjusted as he is.

"Scaring the shit out of you is the only way to guarantee we'll be left alone or put out of our misery."

Yes, he remembers that with Spike all too well, but it only exasperates him further because he didn't know what to do with it then either. They only really got through it because in the end Spike able - perhaps due to Ianto's influence - to articulate what he needed.

Of course, he had a lot more reason to want to help Spike, too.

He glowers at Spike for a long moment, all of this churning in his head, and then he lets out a sigh, running a frustrated hand through his hair.

"All right, point taken. But anyway, despite the bluster, you really think he's not actually going to hurt Ianto? Or anyone?"

If he had a breath he'd hold it for that stretch of time where Jack's just staring, because he really doesn't want this to break out into a fight but he also can't just sit idly by and let people be dumb about shit. They need to know what they're doing, or they'll keep doing it and maybe he's wasting his time here but what else can he do? Can they trust each other if they can't speak openly about this?

Luckily Jack seems to, if not get it then at least accept it.

"I don't think he's got it in him, no. I'll know more after tonight."

So sit tight, he's got this, you got nothing to worry about. Keep an eye on Ianto and let him handle the rest for once.

Spike may not be quite aware of it, but he's probably the person whose opinion Jack values the most on judging others in the dome. They may not always see eye to eye but a lot of that seems to be because they see things so differently - Spike sees what he doesn't, comes at things from a different angle, and he's beginning to realise that rather than arguing with it, he might be able to use that different viewpoint to help understand what he's too old and set in his ways to get.

So while he still doesn't really get exactly where Tyki's coming from, he does accept that Spike knows what he's talking about here.

"What's happening tonight?" he asks, frowning slightly.

"Don't know yet."

He shrugs, trying to downplay how genuinely excited he is to see Tyki again. They go so far back, they've been through so much and out of everyone who's filtered through the prison, no one's ever really understood him the way Tyki does. Not that he'll tell Jack that, and especially not Ianto. As far as they know, this is a covert information mission.

"He said he had something for me."

Yeah, Jack still doesn't really get how close Spike and Tyki used to be, which is probably a good thing right now, as he really doesn't need to be worrying about Tyki being a bad influence on Spike on top of everything else!

He arches an eyebrow at that last comment. "Sounds ominous!" Aiming for lighthearted and not quite making it.

Guess why he's keeping this so very close to his chest. Nothing good will come from this - and he can't argue that Tyki is being cryptic and creepy about this.

"You're telling me." He snorts, contemplating lighting up another cigarette. "Guess we'll see, huh? I'm not too worried."

"I was worried, too. I still am. Terrified is maybe a better word for it if I'm honest." Ianto replies, holding onto Jack just as tightly. The only reason he sought out Spike first yesterday was because he knew exactly where he could find him. As shaken up as he'd been the idea of calling Jack, figuring out where to meet, it had all just felt too much. Easier to make a bee line to the Blood Shack. And even with talking to Jack yesterday it's still so entirely different and good to see him here in person and just hold him. Right now Spike's offer to move in temporarily is a very welcome one if it means he has both of them close to him.

If he's honest he's more terrified by the idea of Tyki hurting someone else than the thought of being a target again. And both Jack and Spike seem like prime candidates for it. They're some of the strongest people left here, Jack at least opposed him in the past and they're both connected to him. No, he really didn't sleep well last night with thoughts like that to keep him company.

It's strange, but Ianto going straight to Spike rather than him didn't bother him anywhere near as much as he might have expected. He trusts Spike more than he would ever have thought possible - and as far as Ianto's concerned, possibly more than he'd trust himself. He knows Spike would do anything for Ianto. With Spike is just about the safest place Ianto could be.

That doesn't stop him almost desperately needing to feel Ianto warm and whole in his arms, though. There's no way he's letting go of him any time soon.

"We won't let anything happen to you this time," he promises, without enough insight to guess that it's less being hurt himself that Ianto's worried about and more him getting hurt. "With any luck, he won't be around for long anyway." Hey, he can hope, can't he?

"From what he's said he doesn't have much interest in hurting me." Of course Ianto talked to Tyki. It was the last thing he wanted to do and yet not something he could resist once he saw that video. Does he believe him? It's hard to say. He knows it was random last time so to an extent he does. But even still just the knowledge that he's here triggers a sense of dread in him, an expectation that he's going to round a corner any minute and find himself face to face with him.

"He mentioned being more interested in other people. I'm more frightened of him harming you or anyone else here than me." He knows how bad it is. He wouldn't wish that on anyone.

He lets out a bit of a rude snort at the idea of Tyki going for him. "Don't you worry about me. I can take anything he decides to fling at me. He can't do anything to me that's anywhere near as bad as seeing what he did to you!"

And then he belatedly realises that Ianto would go through all that too if he were to let Tyki get to him and he shifts track abruptly.

"Anyway, Spike seems to think he's not in a state to hurt anyone at the moment. Let's hope he's right about that, eh?"

((OOC: Sorry for the slow - partly wanting to get further with Spike so I knew where Jack would be at regarding Tyki, partly just life jamming my brain up with other stuff!))

"I keep trying to tell myself that." He replies, not sounding all that convinced. He's not in any hurry to lose contact with Jack so he keeps an arm wrapped around him as he heads to the couch to continue their conversation there. He might as well sit, since it's not as though he has any intention of leaving the apartment today.

"I never really knew him outside of that night, so I can't get a good read on him or what he might do. And even if he ant hurt anyone just knowing he's here makes me feel so weak and useless. I hate that he still has to power to overwhelm me without doing a thing."

((No worries I've been out of town anyway!))
