[439] video

[The camera opens up on a dimly lit room, only the sight of a man's hands hovering over the keys of a piano. He cracks his knuckles and then his fingers glide over the keys, starting into and playing out a solid rendition of Für Elise without error. The further into the song the faster his hands move, until the end where he abruptly shuts the lid of the piano closed.

He leans down to look in the lens, offering a wide (and wicked?) grin.]
I'm up for taking some requests on what to play next.

I believe I do. [The taste of blood in his mouth, the aches of mortal bones and the shuddering cold vacancy left behind. They thought they were helping, or maybe they just wanted to inflict his torture back on him because death would've been mercy. Why didn't they kill him? Find a way to keep him dead, rather than to ruin every aspect of his life in one fell swoop. He remembers everything and too well.]

It's been quite a while. I've noticed a few changes.

[ She wasn't part of any of that, and if she had been she would've spoken against it. That was the thing she never liked about the Defence Force, how it decided stuff for all of them without even saying anything, like some kind of totalitarian police force that didn't know it was a police force.

Anyway. That's neither here nor there.  ]

Mmn, a lot has changed. A lot has stayed the same, too. [ And then, after a beat. ] You should come down to the Dive. I got a brandy and pear pie I think you'd like. [ And Ianto still doesn't step his foot in that place. ]

[The Dive. The Compass, more like it, and while Tyki is more than happy to be lured by his stomach to the pretty company of a girl there is a beat of hesitance. A memory of bloody wood grain, flickering candle light and wine. Wine always tasted the best right after an act of violence.]

Are you sure that's wise? I might scare away other visitors.

[ Oh haha you're adorable. ]

Weirdly enough, I don't really get that many customers. Something about it being the scene of a gruesome murder seem to put people off.

Maybe you should've burnt the place to the ground and started over. [Something of it might've been purged, then.]

But you're telling the truth, it tends to be vacant? [Should he visit.]

Oh yeah, like that would've gone over better. I'm not a child. [ Sorry, Kitty. Chuck doesn't destroy, Chuck builds. ]

It's usually pretty quiet. We're not that many left. [ And if he comes over she can make sure Ton stays at home or goes home so they get some privacy because guess what, this girl still thinks there's something to save. ]

I'll come.

You will? [ Relieved and happy and apprehensive all at once. Wow, he sure brings out a lot of feelings in here. ]

Great. I look forward to giving you a proper tour, show you what I've done with the place.

[ Because honestly, that's half the reason why she took it over. If you'd come back, you'd know life moved on. ]

Sounds lovely. [If he's lying, he's done a decent enough job of covering it up.]

I'll head over on the hour, gives me a little more time to get presentable. [He's clean shaven already, the one sign of him digging himself out of the ditch they threw him in. But he needs a crisp shirt, a waistcoat to tailor the illusion that he's over the agony. That he's not still eager to claw back.]

I'll be here.

[ And she will be, anxiously wiping down tables and straightening tea jars and sorting out her fridge for the sixteenth time while she waits for him to show up. ]

[And arrive he does, on time and looking as good as he ever did before. No more waxy complexion, not a stray hair on his jaw and his suit as fitting for him as the grin that crosses his face when he sees her. A familiar sight, a beautiful sight, and something to focus on in this den of horrors as he waltzes right inside to the bar. Even there he can still remember where the body laid, where he wrote the words in frantic swipes of his blood stained fingers.

He shivers a bit from the vivid, pulsating memory.]
Charlotte, my love. You look even better in person.

[ She watches him as he enters, heart hammering in her chest so hard she swears he has to notice. Her eyes stay steady on him as she moves out from behind the counter, watching his reaction, looking for anything without giving away a thing as she crosses the floor in a few strides, lifts her hand as if she's about to hit him-

-and then presses in close, arms wrapping tightly around him in a hug that leaves no room for protest. The one thing he, hopefully, won't see coming. ]

[He would've rather she struck him, at least that he would've expected. Perhaps not thought he deserved since he'd already lived through the torturous haze that wast he aftermath of everything, but it would've been much more warmly received. He came here against his own fucking conscience, aware he'd remember everything to the finest detail, and here she goes with forgiving him still.

He tenses, teeth grit before he tries to put his hand to her shoulder to push her back.]
What are you doing.

[ She keeps holding on tight, though he could probably push her away without too much trouble if he really tried. Forgiving is exactly what she's doing, even if she'll never forget, because holding on to pain only means it never goes away and she's already died twice and she's not even thirty. You can't live like that. ]

I'm giving you a hug. [ Silly. ] I haven't seen you since the wedding.

[There's a moment where he considers enduring it but he can't, and so he pushes her shoulder back farther. Why didn't he expect this of her, why was he foolish enough to come.] I want to be hugged.

And please, don't pretend you - or anyone else - is all that happy to see me. [He says this with a twisted grin, exhausted behind the manic look in his eyes because he can't help existing. He can't help who he fucking is or was.] Nobody should be welcoming me here. And believe me, I know it.

I'm not pretending. Do I look like someone who pretends, who- who enjoys lying to people?

[ She's eased up on it a bit, for humorous purposes, but important stuff? Never. Pretending to still be dead back home was, ironically, killing her by inches. Never again. ]

If I wasn't happy to see you, you'd know it mister. And you'd probably have a bruise for at least two weeks to remind you of it. [ So knock it off. ] Have a slice of pie with me. We can go outside if it's too much to be here, God knows Ianto hasn't stepped foot since the remodelling.

[He wants to say 'you lie every time you suggest you can still like me' but it's a dark inner thought, a doubt he holds in because the weakness will boil him from the inside out if he doesn't. The stupid, pathetic mortal inside.

He looks around, regarding the place. His skin crawls at the sight of it.]
This is fine. Inside is fine.

[ She watches him, wondering if he actually thinks it's fine. Probably not and maybe this is her own revenge, to force him to face the place where it happened, to live with it as if it's any normal day because that's what the rest of them had to do. These are the consequences you get and killing him with kindness has so far been a much stronger punishment than anything the Defence Force threw at him. ]

You want some coffee too? Freshly brewed.

Sure. [His voice is a little sour, but he looks at her one last time before moving to sit down.

He rubs his fingers against the corners of his eyes, massaging at the bridge of his nose.]
Does Belle still haunt this place? Stupid fat cat.

[ She pours them both a cup and cuts up two slices of pie - pear and brandy, as promised. For a moment she considered going for the more suggestive cherry pie but there is such a thing as pushing it too far and she's happy that he even agreed to stay here and eat. ]

Mmn, I haven't seen her in a while. Maybe Gadget bothered her too much.

[He nods, wondering for a moment where she's gone to. Same place as Road, maybe.

Looking at the food she serves he's stricken with the most unappetizing twist of his gut at the sight of it, but without a beat picks up a fork.]
Do you want to know something? That I don't think anyone else here does know, or realize, and may never?

[ Staying away from cherry was probably a good idea, then. She's glad that he's trying, even if it's just trying to keep up appearances. He could just as well leave and there wouldn't be a thing in the world she could do to stop him. ]

What's that?

I was never without remorse before. [He says this, still not eating but playing his fork through piecrust.

His expression is softer, less guarded.]
But now it's all I can feel. Before at least it balanced out - I don't expect you to understand the details, Charlotte. But I was always a man of balance, and now that balance is gone. She knew that.

[He looks up to her.] They should've found a way to kill me, not this.

[ She listens quietly, chewing her bottom lip as she thinks about what he's saying. He's right, she doesn't understand the details but maybe she gets the gist of it at least. Her response is careful, measured, as if she hasn't fully worked things out but wants to say something nonetheless. ]

I think that... that people are so scared of dying that they want to avoid putting someone else through it, even if the alternative is worse. Dying is nothing - look at me, I'm not even thirty yet and I've already died twice. Anyone can do it. [ Not that he knows about the second time, but whatever. ]

I'm glad you're not dead, but also I think a lot of people need to get comfortable with the idea that sometimes we don't come back and that's okay.

I've chased death around this place and never caught it, funny how that works. [How many times has he put himself in a situation, gambling at high stakes but never seemed to really bite the bullet in roulette. He still hasn't eaten, setting down the fork in lieu of the brandy because his stomach is still knotted. This isn't church, she doesn't need to hear all his sins...]

I've killed countless people, Charlotte. [He looks up to her, almost sad.] Too many to count, but it was different then. I was different. I cared, but not enough to stop myself - what I was, at the time, from doing it anyway.
