Hey. Good afternoon everyone.

I need two things.

Specifically where you'd find good chinese food around here. Recommendations for that sort of thing, because my cooking skills are not as developed as I thought they were. Or if I had any skills in cooking at all, having to survive off lizards and shews and t-rex eggs probably have dulled my taste buds a little too much.

The other thing is that I'd really like to get access to fabrication technology, but since none of it exists here I'd have to build it myself.

Which brings me to asking for help. Building tech like that is doable and will ultimately lead the way to constructing more high tech parts that we can use for basically anything.

I'm looking for a few people interested in engineering, experienced or not. I can probably teach you.

Third thing, sorry. I also need to know if anyone's built a forge here.

Oh and fourth thing. Is there a working theory on the motivations of the people behind this prison program?

That's about it. Get back to me if you're interested. Should keep us busy if nothing else.

[ That almost sounded dirty, Ray. Kirk approves. ]

At least it seems like the influence is good. I know more than a few people who aren't big fans of mine back in that quadrant.

[He does drop the occasional innocent innuendo without realizing it.

He chuckles softly.]

So I'm not actually from your Earth, your world. I just kinda know a lot about it.

I should have known that detail about the Klingons for instance, but it's been a while.

I thought you might not be, but if you aren't, then that means I'm - what? A fictional character in your world?

[ Yeah, he had been alerted to this by some other encounters. It was unpleasant, a bit of a mind-fuck, really, but what had been the point in arguing about it? He knew his own existence, and he refused to fall into some sort of existential crisis over it. ]

It's that, or you know the other me, and from what I've heard I'm prettier.

You're here, seems pretty non-fictional to me.

But yeah there's a media franchise and most would consider it fiction in my world. I mean we could go into the philosophical implications of whether the creator creates the world or the world inspires the creator, but it seems easier to just assume that latter.

The USS Enterprise in her five year mission to explore strange new worlds and new civilizations actually exists in the multiverse and I take no issue with that.

Please, none of those debates. It would bring in to much about potential time distortions, and those already give me a headache.

[ Really, don't, Ray. And don't get him started on time travel too. He particularly hates that. A lot. ]

Well - a version of her anyways. The original, sadly, performed her swan song not that long ago.

It's wax philosophy anyway. I'll try not to bring it up.

[But... He's all about time travel, it's awesome.]

So is that the thing with swarming ships?

I fought something similar.

[ No, no it's not. The last time someone time-traveled in his world, an entire planet died. No bueno, Ray. ]

You mean Krall? Yes, that was when she was destroyed. She's been rebuilt now, but until she is I'm either on shore leave or heading back to teach at the Academy.

[ Neither of which he sounded very enthused about. ]

Oh? Do tell. Did you take them down with classic Beastie Boys songs?

Which is a good choice. Passing on your 'Kirk-ness' to the next generation. [What is he doing.]

I taught physics for two years, but then I was trapped in 1958. Teaching isn't that bad.

[Yes, he has caught he inflection of your tone.]

I can say that in hindsight it would have probably been more fun that way, and Cisco would have enjoyed it, but no.

The were robotic bees.

I wouldn't mind psychics, but I'm command track. I teach the command classes, which is fine, but the diplomacy of it all can get so boring. At least I can make the kids think on their feet and off the beaten track unlike some of the older professors.

[ Sticking to the old ways would make them go stale, and sooner or later they would fall behind the universe. He didn't want to see that happen. ]

Like - were they they same size as real bees, or where they oversized?

[ Details, Ray, details! ]

I hear what you're saying. Though the old professor that I know might be set in his ways but he's still utterly brilliant. Also currently my peer.

Oh, they were bee sized. And packed enough venom to kill an elephant so very deadly. Thankfully I was able to repel with my ATOM suit and we were able to take down the mind behind them.

Bare in mind this is in 2017 where the grand scale of space battles are a rare occurrence. [Which implies they still happen.]

As in - you, what, got really tiny and climbed in them one by one to disable them?

[ That just seemed entirely to roundabout and ridiculous. ]

Wouldn't they have gone down via an EMP?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]pocket_sized
2017-05-23 06:38 am UTC (link)
Actually I hadn't figured out how to shrink the ATOM suit so it was regular sized me. I just doused them in water, and at that point I'm fairly certain the EMP would have taken out the circuitry in my suit as well.

[He's not that foolish, Jim. He knows how to do things. Cool things.]

You just... doused them in water? Like real bees?

[ Is this supposed to sound cool? He's not yet convinced. Also, why electric bees? You got some weirdos up in your world, Ray. ]

[Is it? He just kinda gets the whole swarm thing, man. It's kinda freaky.]

Sometimes the simplest answer is usually the best, doesn't always have to be complicated to work.

[ No, it is. And it was totally unfair - you can't expect a ship with grav requirements to go up against a bunch of tinier ships that don't have G-Force restrictions! ]

No, you're right, I'm just surprised. And a little unclear on why someone would use bees, I suppose. That seems complicated.

[Or expect a human to easily survive a swarm of metal insects, each of which carry multiple lethal doses of venom.]

Think about it. Robot bees, sophisticated enough to be mistaken for the real thing, sent into a war zone? You could discretely assassinate, or bring down an entire city if you really wanted to. They were apparently being developed for military use, but Mercury Labs shut Larven down.

And she retaliated, so we had to stop her.

[info]universal_charm

That still seems like a lot of intense upkeep, and they would be so susceptible to environmental factors, wouldn't they? A single grain of sand in the cogs and it would go down, wouldn't it?

[ Again, just - overly complicated. ]

Oh, jilted researcher?

They were extremely sophisticated, granted I hadn't been able to see them in action in the field other than battling against them, but the numbers game really worked for them. There are so many, that eventually one of them would hit the target.

I hear she modified them to be self replicating now.

Of course she would.

[ Why is it when you go up against someone crazy they just have to go all the extra steps? No one could get a break, it seemed. ]

Well, I'm glad you stopped that. Humanity has enough problems without engineered killer bees.

That may be wise.

Yeah, that would be interesting. Bones would lose his mind if he ended up in my city.
