Day 419 - video - open
Hey... I have a question.

Is it normal for people to show up from the same universe but different points in time in that universe?

I think it might have just happened.

[He gives a little shrug. It's creepy, but sensible in it's special, creepy way.]

Yes, but that was some time ago.

Do you know what was there?

Or, who went who saw it?

Yes, I do. How much detail would you like? I can also tell you who else was there.

Oh. [Keith looked a bit surprised.] You remember a lot of it? I mean, as much as you can, I guess.

[He still had that idea map on the wall of the apartment he'd decided to claim for himself, as he tended to be a visual thinker, so anything he got was probably going to be added to that.]

I remember most of it, I think. It was on Day 296 [which feels like it was longer than 123 days ago, but time is funny here] and glowing doors opened--why or how, I don't know. Some of us went through the doors, and then we woke in pods. We left them and found everyone else in pods of their own... everyone who had chosen not to go through the doors, and everyone who has been here and left. I can only conclude that our bodies stay in that prison even after we leave the simulation.

Anyway, it was a large space, but not as comfortable as this simulation. Utilitarian, I would call it. Very technologically advanced. There were cots to sleep on and pills for food. There was what I think was a control center that none of us could reach.

No one was there other than more robots and two beings who called themselves "engineers." The one that I talked to looked like a... very large bug, maybe, or a shrimp. Eight, nine feet tall. The other was nothing but dark robes and a mask.

And then we were back here.

[ooc: Sorry this took so long! Iiii actually didn't remember much at all.]

{OOC: No trouble!}

[Keith listened to the whole thing quite intently. A lot of it sounded really freaky, and he was kind of glad he didn't see it in person, to be honest. He wasn't sure how he'd handle all of it. He nodded. Not reaching the control room made sense, overall. Making it too easy to get to would be a major oversight on the part of their captors.]

So, these "engineers"... they're the ones that developed this place?

So they say, and I see no reason to doubt that they played a large role in it.

I also spoke with a woman named Mary who I think may be the engineer with the mask. She claimed to run the simulation.

[Oh, yeah... this stuff will be getting added to his board once he's done talking with Chekov.]

Mary, huh? Thanks. Do the engineers interact with the prisoners at all or is everything through the AI wardens?

If Mary was being honest--and I think that she was, we had a very friendly conversation--then the engineers do interact occasionally. It seems that they use human avatars rather than the forms that we saw in the real prison so we feel more at ease.

Well, it seems most of the people here are human looking, so I can see why they would go that route.

[Keith's seen aliens, man. Lots of weird aliens. When Chekov described a large bug and a person in dark robes with a mask, he didn't even flinch.]

Thanks for all this.

I'm Keith, by the way. I don't think we've actually met.

[Chekov has seen some weird aliens too, but that giant insect, man. So many eyes. So tall.]

Of course, Keith, you're welcome.

I'm Pavel Chekov, and yes, this is the first time we've spoken. Sorry--it was rude to start talking at you without saying hello.

[Seeing it in person might have gotten a different reaction, but the description didn't seem to bother him too much.]

Oh, no problem. I mean, I did ask a question.

[He offered Chekov a small smile.]

I'm pleased that I could offer an answer.

You came here very recently, correct?

Yeah... only a few days ago. One of my teammates arrived today.

Then a late welcome to you, and also my condolences on your imprisonment. It can help sometimes to have someone you know here, even if that someone is from a different moment.

In a way. I was in another prison for two years prior to this one... being two years removed from others from my universe makes it difficult for me to decide if the answer to that is yes or no.

[Keith looked a little surprised.]

So, you've been away from home for a lot longer already.

Was the other prison run by the same authority?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]candothat

No, it was entirely different--much larger, and those running it referred to themselves as deities. They were no more godly than the engineers here, of course.

Life becomes very strange once you leave your home universe.

Live becomes very strange once you leave your home planet.

[Keith was a recent arrival to the idea of outerspace and the idea that there was way more out there than they realized.]

Was it better there or worse, would you say?

[info]candothat

Does that mean that you leave your home planet often?

[Talk to him about space travel, it's his favorite!]

Not better or worse. Both are prisons and both have good and bad qualities. I would much prefer home to either.

[info]tempredmental

Yeah... home would be nice.

[He could agree with Chekov on that one.]

Well, not so much that we leave it often, but more like we left it once in something of a crisis and haven't gone back.

[Keith didn't regret the decision, but he did sometimes wonder if the others felt homesick. He really didn't feel like he had much to go back to Earth for, but he knew Hunk and Lance had families to go back to, and he was sure Pidge would want to go home once she found her father and brother, so it would probably be nice to get back there at some point.

And it would be familiar, which was something he could actually appreciate. Familiar food, familiar surroundings, being able to read the signage, telling time in units he recognized... He was slowly getting used to things as they were now, but he understood missing something he knew.]

Ah. [This is one of those situations where Chekov isn't sure if it would be impolite to ask for elaboration or not. Sometimes people are vague because they don't want to share, at least not with a stranger.]

I'm sorry that you haven't had a chance to return. Even when I'm content where I am, part of me misses home.

Yeah. [Keith shrugged a little.] I mean, it's been fun, but really weird, and kind of scary all at once. But, I know a couple of my teammates really miss home.

What we're doing is important, but it would be nice to go back to something familiar.

How long were you in space?

You will all have an opportunity to return home, I'm certain.

Five years... but it has only been three since the last time I was on Earth.
