There were people Martha should talk to. People who she needs to check up on, to provide a shoulder to lean on if they need it.

Martha shook her head to clear that thought from it. That was what she did in the future. Lost all sense of what she wanted... what she needed... so she could be there for other people. What a miserable life. No. Today she was going to take care of herself.

She went to the spa. Starting with a soak in the hot springs and then a massage. A mani and pedi... She felt good.

And then walking. The labyrinth was a good place for self reflection - a place to lose herself in a walking meditation.

And of course she needed food. And coffee. Bean Crushers was a definite stop for her today. There were people she should talk to, but they could wait. Martha had to take care of herself.

Reid has been doing something similar, if by similar you mean pretending as if nothing at all happened and it's business as usual. Part of his daily routine - several parts, actually - involves Bean Crushers and coffee and so it seems almost inevitable that they cross paths.

"Martha."

His greeting is measured and careful, as if he's bracing himself for a conversation he doesn't want to have.

On second thought, Bean Crushers was not the best choice. Too many people she wanted to avoid frequented the establishment. Case in point, Reid greeted her.

"Hi Reid."

Why have the conversation they maybe should have? Martha takes it somewhere else entirely.

"Nice message you sent out today. You expecting a decent response?"

This is why he likes her, maybe even loves her in platonic ways. He breathes a small sigh of relief, relaxing visibly at the direction she's brought this conversation.

"I'm not sure. I have a feeling people are either happy with the way things are, or don't care enough to do anything about it. Maybe it's a waste of time altogether, but I won't know if I don't try."

Don't worry Reid, it's really quite self-serving, her not talking about the future.

"Hopefully more people chime in. I'm in agreement with you. The Force has definitely lost whatever effectiveness it had back when I arrived."

It hurts her to say that too. Sounds too much like she's going against Jack.

He nods in agreement, though honestly he didn't think the Force was very effective for most of the time he's been here. It's easy to be discouraged, easy to miss things and with the coming and going, almost impossible to keep a chain of command.

"It's... not very inclusive. I'd even say it's, ah... it's gotten too personal. Whether you're a part of it or not says a lot about who you ally with and I don't like that development."

Kitty doesn't take it too well when her friends quit the team, even if it has nothing to do with her as a person. That's not a good thing to do if you're a leader, as far as he's concerned.

Martha cocked her head. "I've never really managed to click with Kitty, so I don't know how she feels about me not joining back up on my return. But I've not seen that from Jack. Of course, he knows I'm not really aligned with anyone back home either."

She takes a sip of her coffee as she thinks about it.

"What we need is a set of guidelines for everyone to follow. With protocols for emergencies. Like you said. Things that could be sent out with the welcome basket and pinned up on a wall. Or that a welcoming committee could bring people's attention to. Or both."

So much easier than talking about 20 years down the line.

"That's exactly what I've been thinking. One thing doesn't exclude the other, either. I know a lot of people see the Force as some kind of purpose here."

He did too, in the beginning, and then he realised that it was false purpose, false productivity. It felt like work but wasn't. At least doing it on his own removes the false safety of a team substitute.

"Yes, but it allows people to be lax too. If they believe the Force is taking care of them, they don't have to worry about things. Which would be fine perhaps if we had hundreds of people here, but we don't. And the turnover is too high."

She believed in it too at first. But joining up didn't feel right when she came back to the prison.

"That's the thing, isn't it? Why don't we have a protocol for when something happens? It should be plastered all over the place. We can't rely on information from a select group of people whenever something happens here."

The Defence Force itself isn't the problem, he thinks. The complacency is.

"I agree. And maybe if we could get a Town Hall where we could discuss things, we could figure some of this out."

Provided it didn't devolve into a yelling match.

"That's what I'm thinking... and honestly, for starters we could gather in the amphitheater or one of the bigger classrooms."

It should be so easy and yet, judging by the conversations he had earlier today, it's practically impossible. Like herding cats.

"Why don't we try that in a day or two? Gather what information you get today and then call a meeting? I mean, what's the harm in saying we're having a town meeting at this time at this place on this day? If people want to come, they'll come."

"Sure... why not. I could use a day to recharge. If I've learned anything, it's that I'm not cut out for politics."

It's perhaps even more discouraging than the potential future they're both so carefully avoiding.

"Oh my god politics are so bloody obnoxious. And unfortunately necessary. Let me know if you need help. Though I have to say, my diplomacy isn't always the greatest."

She's desperately trying to keep this conversation going because it means they won't talk about the future. But she doubts they'll be able to skirt the issue entirely.

"Maybe it'll be easier to convince them as a group... I don't know. Either they're loyal to the current state of the Defence Force or they don't care or both."

Frustrating. So goddamn frustrating, especially for a federal agent who's used to the whole bureaucratic procedure of being questioned and defending your actions with fact, not emotion.

"At the very least it'll be something different. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. But getting preemptively frustrated isn't going to help anything.

"If you'd like, I'll make the call even."

It'll put her firmly into Reid's camp of things, but she's okay with that.

"I know." He sighs, trying to shake it off. It's times like these that he really really misses having a team that have the same training and really know how to work together.

"There are a few people who agree with us. Maybe we can meet up, all of us, figure out a strategy from there."
