Kanji's always been good at getting that kind of thing. Back home he was always the most grounded, the least idealistic of the group. He never had the big grand plans, but he tended to see the unexpected side of them.
He also gets that Jack's trying to changed the subject so he lets him. Once upon a time that question would have sent him into a blushing flustered panic but now he just shrugs and drinks again. "Timing never really seems right."
There's that same note of truth in his voice, that way he's grown into and sharpened his natural perceptive nature over the years and in this case applie it to himself. Yeah, there have been people over the years he's been interested in but some of it was at a time when he was still too unhappy and uneasy with himself to make anything of it. Or maybe people disappeared before he had time to finish doing all that growing up. He hasn't rushed into things but it seems like it's been the right move for him. Where he's at now is good in terms of the fact that he's accepted himself and he's happy with himself. Anything that comes along later is just a bonus.
