[ Reid sounds tired and determined, perhaps more so than usual on both accounts. This is a shitty day already. ]

Hey. Do you have a moment?

Hey, what's up? [No musical inclinations here, thankfully.]

[ Thank fuck for that. He's feeling impatient and it bleeds out in his voice. No pleasantries here. It's all business. ]

How close are you to having the Animus functional?

[... Boy you give her a shiver of what Lucy's tone of voice used to feel like.] How soon do you need it?

Baby's pretty intact. I can get her going.

[ Welcome to Reid on a mission. It's a shame it's taken him nine months to get there. ]

As soon as possible. [ A beat. ] We need to get out of here and I don't have any other ideas. I'm sick of waiting.

I'll get her running. [Reassuring; he's not the only one itching to get to work.

Too many delays. Setbacks. Distractions.]
I can set her up in my place or I can look into some of the other apartments in our hall, that way we can just fill up the space and use it when we want without disturbing a host. [She'll also happily become a top contender for her name on the most rental agreements in the dome.]

Whatever works. You know how this process goes better than I do.

[ Speaking of. ]

Run it by me again... what should I be expecting?

With the Animus? [Oh, thinking about Baby puts her right back into action mode alright.]

It was initially designed to relay memories pulled out of subject DNA for replay and analysis. It relies on synchronization to work best which usually related to getting people used to the controls and immersing them in easier memories at a stable time point before moving forward to more complex ones so that they weren't experiencing a disconnect and then, literally, disconnecting. We'd use the memory data collected for analysis.

[...] When Lacus was around she and I rigged up a lot of the Animus's systems to function as a VR simulator, using the same technology in a more portable fashion. Some of it's been lost in translation but no matter what I know how to work Baby, the Animus, so I can keep her optimal and recode what I have to. But the VR uses the functionalities to replicate whatever we want to design digitally while also tapping into the nervous relays to make it... feel real too. There is a downside though. To the Animus.

[ He listens quietly, nodding on his end. The parts that he doesn't understand fully are easy enough to gloss over, technical details that he doesn't need to worry about as long as she's around to operate it. He's just about ready to get this going but the professional in him pulls on the breaks, wanting the whole story. ]

What's the downside?

Okay, I might've brought it up before but it's the Bleeding Effect. It's when overuse of the Animus in experiencing ancestors' memories begins to confuse the user and overlap. People begin to mix reality in the present with memories of the past, losing grip of who they are or what they've experienced. Prolonged periods in the Animus can pose risks, but honestly I don't think it'll apply in our context greatly. I mean, we're already dealing with this in terms of this simulation here. People get memories from home that overlap with their realities here and have to deal with two 'yesterdays'.

Any signs of confusion from the Animus and I'll make sure we tone it down, or monitor sessions better to prevent it. But you deserve to know the extent of what it can do. You've, ah... met Clay before? Clay Kaczmarek.

[ Back to listening quietly and she's already addressing any protests he might've had about already living with this every single day. One more layer of un-reality can't be that bad, right? Even if it is, he's willing to risk it. ]

Yeah. I know Clay. [ Somewhat darkly. It wasn't a great meeting. ]

Clay was forced into the Animus by Abstergo to obtain information from his DNA, to a torturous amount. He suffers from the Bleeding Effect, suffered- [hard to tell what tense to use when you've recently seen him back from the dead] and because our inside person didn't get him out he ended up committing suicide.

Daniel Cross was another similar case, and although the Assassins tried to help him his situation turned sour. [The sleeper agent thing didn't help either.] To a degree though, therapy and medication can help. But we're not going to get that deep into it-- we should be alright. Just giving all the facts.

[ He nods, solemnly. Okay. That's - good to know, as frightening as that sounds to someone with his history. There's something, though. ]

But that's not really what we're dealing with here, is there? We're not, uh... going into my ancestors.

Right. Any exposure you have in the Animus in replicating your own life shouldn't affect you negatively, at least not more so than this place is already with the conflicting timelines and additional memory bump-ups. [It should be fine. Right?]

We'll put in adequate breaks and I'll of course be monitoring you.

[ He hadn't thought about that. The replicating his life part, he just figured they'd run a scenario and he'd try to get out of it. The potential of tapping into his own memories, relive or restage them... that's dangerous for someone like Reid, even more so since he's hitting the 9 month mark of imprisonment. He could see his mom again, his teammate, just wander around DC and for a moment pretend that he's home.

He could see Maeve. ]

Yeah... of course. [ He clears his throat but it's pretty obvious that he's not thinking about this scientifically right now. It's a great temptation. ]

[Any state of him existing as himself is himself, really. She doesn't imagine he'd have much fun reliving his own memories but it's the option to go to to at least ensure he's synched with Baby when they start. Then they can get abstract if they want.]

We call it synching. When you get synchronization in Baby it helps adhere to memories and relive them but it also helps your mind adjust to the device and not try to reject it. If we want to simulate sequences properly we'll have to do it, just a little bit, but then we're free to do whatever we like. Just sort of like a walk, talk, jump tutorial?

[ He nods again, still somewhat distracted but trying to think about this professionally. Of course he has to adjust to the tech. No different than going to the gun range with a new weapon. ]

That makes sense. Whenever you're ready, then.
