[It had taken a fair bit of effort to put everything together, but none of it that wasn't enjoyable. While Zero did do a majority of the cooking, the others helped out here and there. In retrospect, the sheer amount of foods and ingredients he picked up the day before wasn't too much at all. In a general sense Zero made sure that the apartment was well stocked.

Unlike breakfast the other day, tonight their meal is set up more like a buffet, with a good variety of dishes, some of which he's only recently learned how to make. Plenty of meat and fish, a few noodle dishes, salads, etc etc. In hopes it would maybe get Ichiru to at least stop by, too, Zero made the tomato soup that they both used to love when growing up.

Dessert is of course provided as well. More specifically, a sundae bar. A little later on after they've eaten he'll set up the bowls, ice cream, and fixings along the counter.]

Unfortunately I can't see that happening. I do make things for him, but more often than not I just end up leaving it at his doorstep.

[She pouts and frowns. Such a difficult person. Even after all of this time he's still so resist to her attempts.]

I'll find a way... [She's determined....!]

[He does get and understand very well where she's coming from. However also. . .]

Just don't try and push him. [He (very) faintly smiles.] I know I don't need to tell you that, and I have complete faith in you, but please. Be understanding.

I feel it's even more difficult for him, now, to know about both Ai and Ren.

[She simply huffs at that.]

Difficult for Ichiru? It should be the easiest thing in the world for him. He's the last person who should need an adjustment period. [He doesn't have parents who have forgotten him or children that he never knew he had.]

Even the children were excited to have him. If anything, he has an obligation as an uncle to be 'the fun guy'. He hardly has to do anything at all except show up.

[He tries not to wince with those words. She really is right, he knows.]

An obligation? Maybe. I won't especially disagree. But he's by far the most resistant, insufferable [asshole] person I've ever known. He often won't even give me the time of day.

Isn't it? [That's how an uncle should be! Not like... her own. However, as he continues, her expression softens. Their relationship is complicated and she knows that. Often it's painful for him.]

You're the most patient person I know. Just give him time. I'm sure that in the face of so many people who want to simply show him he's loved, he wont be able to resist forever.

I have been.

[A bit hushed. Both hands grip the bedding he's seated upon. It's even clearer than day how much this is affecting him.]

I've been giving him all the patience and time since he showed up here just about a month ago, now. He hasn't changed at all. Or tried to. Only the two times when it was due to the Wardens' tricks. He doesn't care about being loved; maybe he doesn't even want to be.

Zero...

[Reaching out, her hand falls upon his own.]

And how much longer have you had to be patient with me? After the furnace, and before Ai's birth? [The long time it took for her to pull herself together. Even sometimes now those dark clouds swell to surround her.]

Just don't give up.

I know. I do.

[Which he does, and very well, too. Both what she means, and is implying.]

I won't give up, but. . . it's still different. [His brows knit.] You let people in. You're appreciative; when you're having a hard time with anything, you let others support you as much as they're able to. You're not forcefully pushing me of anyone else away.

I have faith in you. [Her fingers curl around his, and she gives him a soft, encouraging smile while sitting up properly.] Maybe not today or even tomorrow... you'll get through to him. In the end, I think he cherishes that you love him, Zero.

[She's sure of it. Even if he doesn't know how to express it in a healthy manner.]

And I do appreciate you. Not one day goes by where I don't feel grateful for having you in my life.

He's miserable here.

[He faints smiles, none to happy, even while also there's something bittersweet about it.]

He had been wanting and ready to die, you know. [She probably does, though. Yet he still spoke those words.] He does, though, I'm sure. I know that what he was like during those two times here wasn't a complete lie.

[How playful he wan, albeit still at Zero's expense. There was so much more genuine affection laid bare between then.

He kind of hates the Wardens even more for having done what they had.]

Mm. [His hand shifts a little within hers, fingers lacing.] Sometimes I really don't know what I'd do without you.

[She knows something of pain. The agony felt when you love someone who's given up on hope and life is excruciating. And she knows the loss he feels in regards to Ichiru stems from his own frustration of not knowing what to do to reach him.

She wishes she had an answer. If she did, the events of nine years ago would have changed the present drastically.

Lying back down against her pillows, she scoots over and prompts him to join her for the time being.]

Well. If you didn't for one, you never would have learned how to properly pick out clothes for yourself. You're welcome. [She says it while staring up at the canopy of her bed above her with a creeping smile.]

[They really have both experienced such heartbreak. Only, for Ichiru, there is no returning. There is no being woken at a later date, no matter how incredibly far into the future it may be. While Kaname had drifted in those moments after giving his heart to the furnace, then very quickly to be preserved, Ichiru had grown cold within his arms. Zero had been able to acutely feel as his pulse slowed, before fading altogether. He remembers too well how nauseous he felt with the taste of his brother's blood still in mouth.

However he would never discredit Yuuki's own circumstances, and the gutting misery and pain he knew very well which she felt.

The subject is neither here nor there, now. He doesn't want to continue to focus on Ichiru, when tonight has already been (otherwise) one that he'll remember well.

While ultimately brief, Zero is initially surprised with the invite. Of course he doesn't question it as he lies down next to her, on his side and propped up on one arm.]

Ah. That's right. What a good teacher you were.

[Dry sarcasm at its best, while more playful in the end.]

Now that I can take care of myself, I'm sure you had fun choosing Ai's clothing.

[She laughs with a small hum. Actually, if he lets her, she'd still go pick out things for him to wear.]

Of course! Picking out clothes for a little girl is one of the many joys of being a mother! [Her smile never fades.] She has more adorable outfits than she'll ever know what to do with. Because outside of what I buy her, Ruka-san, and many others often buy her cute clothes, too.

[She looks precious in all her many dresses and outfits. After a moment she becomes amused.]

Actually, Ruka-san loves helping dress her. She tries to find the more boyish clothes she possesses, because of her resemblance to her father.

[Even if now what he usually wears is what she often bought for him in the first place?]

All the more reason for you to miss her being that age, and instead grown up here, huh.

[Don't go there, Zero.] Would she ever come along with you to find something she likes as well? What kinds of toys did she like?

[He does wish he was able to experience all of that, too. Watching as Ai grew up. At least he knows that's still a part of his future.

On a different note, that just seems weird for Ruka. Then again, she did always seem hooked on Kuran. For better or worse. Not that Zero paid much attention to it all in the end.]

I can only imagine how much more the Chairman spoils her. [. . .] I hope for her sake that she doesn't have to experience his style of cooking.

[It is difficult. She's incredible, and it's wonderful to see what an amazing young woman she's become. Yuuki can't feel prouder. But to go from being fully depended upon, to seeing her little girl all grown up certainly hits her hard.

Not to mention not having been able to experience Ren's childhood at all yet.]

I think she might. I don't think I'm so old yet that my fashion sense has to be so very drastically different from her own.

[She likes to think she picks out cute clothes.]

As for the President, well- there's really no... shielding her entirely. Although I usually try to insist on someone else cooking if her grandfather is around.

I hardly imagine your own style will suddenly become matronly.

[Cute is much more like it. She's always looked nice, so of course Ai will.

Regardless, he's almost grinning at her with his words because it's true, right? She's the one who's proclaimed to be much more mature, now, over the last couple of years.]

Oh? Have I been able to provide at all, in that case? [He probably doesn't need to ask.] I guess that's all you can really do. I can only imagine how he must react to that. He must be thrilled to have a granddaughter, though.

[With a glance over to him she frowns in displeasure, suddenly huffy.]

. . . Ai-chan always enjoys your cooking. [It seems like she enjoys his more than she enjoys hers... hmph hmph.]

Of course the president is thrilled, though. He spoils her rotten.

[Don't give him that look.]

I can [still?] help you learn, you know.

Well, she's worth it. Ren, too.

[He can imagine Haruka does as well, although at times he's way too over protective. It's honestly a little irksome. He's glad for Yuuki being able to genuinely spend time with her father, though.]

What are you talking about? I know how to cook.

[She cooks for her daughter often enough...! The results are... sometimes different. The mention of Ren, however, darkens her cheeks.

She's so grateful to have this chance to meet and learn about Ren. It's who the father is that has her a little flustered in that regard.]

I'm sure that he loves them both. The same as father, here.

I know. [Really. . .] There's always new things.

[The way she blushes (of course) doesn't go unnoticed. He might be able to guess the reasons behind it, as well. Pointing it out or teasing her isn't something he'll do, though. (Maybe not yet).]

I can only imagine he does, too. [Haruka seriously questions him, though. Yuuki probably knows this, right?] I want to make the best of every moment we have.

Marina is quite the difference from home, huh.

[With a frown her gaze turns back up onto the ceiling above them, staring blankly as her mind wanders back to the events at home.]

Here you can do whatever you like. And you don't have to worry about how the rest of the world will react to it.

Very much so.

[He eventually shifts to lie on his back as well.]

It's liberating.

[A part of him really wants to comment on something she said earlier: how back home they can only spend time together upon a bench at the academy. That's of course just one of the very different things here.

When he speaks again it's a little more quietly; maybe even hesitant.]

Would it be wrong to say a part of me really doesn't mind our being here?

[Even at such a young age, he feels that way? She supposes, if she remembers, that he had struggled greatly seeing her battle through depression.

. . . It would be a lie to pretend that she hasn't contemplated this same issue herself. It's much more peaceful in Marina. But despite the general serenity (most days) she knows choosing to stay is an impossibility.

It can't ever be an option.]

It isn't wrong. [No one can be faulted for feeling that way. There are plenty of people here who prefer it.] My father is here, after all. [It's the only chance she'll ever have to see him again.]

. . . But in the end, I could never allow for Ren or Ai to spend their many long years in prison.

[Briefly at the tip of his tongue are more questions of why she hasn't been up front with her father. If it hasn't already happened. But that's not the point of the conversation.]

As is Ichiru. [Someone who he'd never see again as well, even for as trying as his brother can be.]

I know. I couldn't either. You're right. [She is. It's not him suddenly changing his mind.] Just I also couldn't allow that for you.

[Didn't she see that coming?]

But while we already are here. . . I don't want to take any of it for granted. I'd like to make the best of it for as much as that's possible.
