Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[He feels nothing but contentment when she takes his hand, rests against it. She accepts him, completely, and he wants to do the same. He forgets for a moment that he's not talking to the daughter of his memories because it feels like then, the happy days that are far behind this child here. There are the swells of pride, the regret and guilt, the happiness he should feel if this really were his daughter and it's disorienting when he stops and he looks at her, really looks at her.

Maybe that's all he really needs, though. Nothing false could give the same feeling as what he feels watching her struggle through this life she was not prepared for. A parent should recognize their child, and though she's older, she's matured, she's seen a world he hasn't, he still feels it deep inside that she's the little girl who cuddled up for story time, who listened intently to whatever they were telling her, who cried and laughed and smiled so brightly despite all that she wasn't allowed to be a part of.

He wants so much to have the memories she has, so he might better help her. All he can do is watch patiently and hope the answer comes, that he'll be able to one day see it, too, so she won't have to feel so alone in this.]

You may fight and argue, and you may be mad at him or hate something that he's doing, but you'll always still love him. No matter what happens, I don't think that will ever change.

[It never does. He and Juri don't always agree, no relationship is free of tension, but that doesn't mean he loves her any less. It only grows, when that tension fades and they come to terms with it. And whatever Kaname and Yuuki are going through, they will work through it, in whatever way they choose. This he believes.]

And one day, you will have that happy future you want.

[He can't imagine anything less, for her.]

I met a part of it yesterday... Ai. [She's the perfect mix of Kaname and Yuuki.] My precious daughter becomes a wonderful mother.

... It feels strange to say that.

[There's much she has to remain quiet on, and she hates keeping it from him. In the end, she just nods quietly, her eyes closed as she still holds onto the warmth of his hand. She will have a future. But that person will no longer be a part of it. But how she wishes that was a time she has to look forward to.

Instead, Ai is what she can focus on. Her lips finally curl up into a bit of a smile and her eyes peak open to find him again.]

If father was surprised to see me yesterday all grown, just imagine my surprise to realize I have a fifteen year old daughter, when I'm only seventeen myself.

[It's... a lot to think about. Even now.]

I hope that Ai-chan feels as though I've been there for her though. It's difficult to keep in mind that I'm actually her mother when we're almost the same age. [It's a lot to wrap her head around. Especially when she feels like she doesn't have any amount of control in her life currently.]

Also that child is so much like Kaname-oniisama. She can be really serious, independent, and she's excellent at school. I keep wondering in what way I can help her.

[D-Defeated...]

I tried to offer her help with school work, but... she finishes everything before me, and then points out whenever I make a mistake in my own papers. [She just wants to look knowledgeable in front of her daughter sob]

[It does sound like quite the surprise, a feeling he can relate to deeply. It's not easy, being confronted by a child who knows you, but is unknown themselves. It'd help if these wardens wouldn't play games with their lives, choosing when and how to bring in their criminals, but if they were going to quit, they wouldn't be here talking, now.

Though, she's still his little girl. Did she even know she was going to be a mother before she arrived here?

He watches her with amusement, her warmth a comfort to the number of things that still unsettle him.]

She is certainly Kaname's child. I saw it in her mannerisms, yesterday. [While very adorable, he can already tell it must be troubling sometimes, before Yuuki continues, talking about schoolwork. Children never change, do they?]

I can help tutor you if you'd like. That way, you can help her whenever you study together.

[Otousama's got this. Also, it's an excuse for him to help her. Let him be useful.]

Mothers aren't just there for schoolwork. Just think about what your mother does for you. Tell her stories and comfort her when she needs it. Play games with her. Remember hide and seek?

[Best game to watch children be adorable and cuddle with family ever.]

[Somewhat embarrassed. It's kind of her father to offer. And of course she'll take him up on his offer. Between him and and Zero, hopefully she can... make a little headway. But admitting how poor her grades are to her father is a little disheartening, too.]

. . . F-For whatever the reason, school doesn't come as easily to me as it does the rest of the family.

[ Kaname said it was probably due to television... That embarrassment somewhat fades though, and an amused look crosses her face.]

Father, aren't we all too old for hide and seek? [Not to break his heart.] But I suppose other games could be fun. I'm on the base ball team here in Marina. It's difficult though... because the game is also played with humans. [And most are all incredibly talented. It's only that when supernaturally strong and fast, she has to try and tame things down. But taming things down is the challenge.]

But with ourselves and Zero, I suppose we could come up with something exciting to do. [Where they don't have to worry about going all out.]

Everyone learns at their own pace. There's nothing wrong with that, it just means you excel in another area.

[Father trying to be encouraging! Because there's nothing to be embarrassed about. There's plenty of time for her to learn everything she might want to learn, it might just take a little longer.

Oh, but... Otousama isn't sure how to take the next comment. With a thoughtful frown, he stares at her.]

Are we? But Yuuki is still... [He stops, because the child in front of him isn't so little anymore. It's unnerving, it's painful, it's a multitude of things that Haruka doesn't want her to have to deal with, and so, he smiles instead, changing the focus from those things to something else.]

Baseball... that's a game you like? I've never played.

Well... [Did she hurt his feelings?] I mean, I guess it could be interesting playing hide and seek through the entire dome. Barring sector six.

I'm enjoying baseball! Although it's not my favorite sport. There just isn't much else offered here.

[Unfortunately. But she does enjoy getting to run around.]

Back at the academy, I really enjoyed the pole vault and vaulting box. P.E. was always my favorite class.

That sounds like a lot of work. [Okay so she's an oxymoron. She likes to be active just as much as she likes to laze around. Somewhere in her mind it all makes sense.]

I thought about a food tasting club, but Zero said that wasn't a thing. [She doesn't know why not, aren't there professional food tasters?] But it's just as well. Between the defense force, the flower shop, base ball, and everything else, I wonder if I would have time to actually join another team or club?

[Which is all on top of her school classes]

You'd need someone to cook for you each time... [Look, if Yuuki wants it done, Haruka will find a way to make it happen. That is what he does.]

That aside, don't take on too much. I'll help where I can.

Aha I suppose that's true. We could combine with a cooking club I suppose... [She can't remember if there is one any more. She remembers there used to be one in the past. Maybe they should look into it.

Without his saying such, Yuuki can tell almost instantly that he's concerned with her place on the force. A touch amused, she can't help her smile.]

Are you worried, father? [Of course he is. She knows very well how he tried to protect and shield her at home.] I used to be a sector leader. The defense force is a really important organization for protecting others.

[Haruka's really just trying to maximize daddy-daughter times. Clubs really aren't the selling point.

But don't be amused. Of course he's worried. Unsavory individuals who might hurt her... he didn't really like Juri going out on her own, let alone his daughter. Why don't you take after him, stay home and read?]

I'm sure it is. [But...] You've become strong, but I still don't want to see you hurt.

Well... somehow... [Father... ] I think that I would like to eat the food that other people cook. Other than what I can cook...

[She tries. Truly she does. But if she had to eat something that she made or that Zero made, well... ]

Although I suppose we could try a couple dishes ourselves anyhow.

[She can indulge him a little. Besides, she wants to cook more for her family.]

I'm sorry...[She continues. She doesn't mean to make light of his fears. Of course he's her father and he would worry about her. She's touched that he does.] I know that father only wants to look out for me. Thank you. Will you be joining the force then, too? [Or does he only intend to follow after her.]

It isn't that it bothers me. [She's glad that he cares about her and wants to protect her of course. She continues on delicately.] More so I was wondering if you would have the ability to... focus on the task at hand if something happened.

[She rushes to explain] That is-! If there was a dangerous situation, and you are on the defense force, you have to focus on protecting everyone. Not just me...

You and Ai will always be my priority.

[And he will do whatever it takes to protect them.]

But whether I'm on the defense force or not, in order to protect you, I'll have to protect everyone.

[Protect Yuuki's world, her friends, her family. As much as he really isn't interested in it, playing hero or some such, he knows it's also necessary, when one loves someone, to care about their interests just as much as his own.]

I just wanted something to do with you.
