Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Wildcard

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[There is no answer for that first part. Ichiru learned early on when he first arrived, but the circumstances are incomparable. His brother had wanted to die— in the time point he's from, he had just been on his way, already bleeding and weakened by Rido, to demand (force) that Zero finish the task. Nothing at all mattered to him anymore, and there had been nothing Zero could have done. Regretfully so, much as it's been like in Marina.]

Were our positions reversed, I would have expected you to tell me.

[Plain and simple. In an afterthought Zero realizes he's never actually told her that.]

And if he begins to ask about how his life has been? What then? Will you further dance around the subject, or flat out lie altogether? As it is he's been asking me about you; he's wanting proof that I'll not hurt you and Ai, and only strive to make you happy. Not simply my word and promise. There's already basic things I haven't been able to say.

[He knows he's being cruel, but also knows she's fully aware of this.]

So you won't be sharing your blood with him, then, I imagine. Maybe not even Ai; she wasn't there to experience these things, but knows very well enough about the truth. We can prevent memories here and there from being seen, but with there being such a great deal of information that you're not telling him, there's no reassurance of just how much you'll be able to mask. . . but you [also] know that already, don't you.

[Visibly she stiffens, his words striking just as much as any blow would. It twists her stomach sickeningly, and she feels that uneasy sensation in her chest. She hates it.]

If you're never happy with how I handle things, then why do you stay with me to begin with?

[A snap, before she visibly flinches. No, that's wrong-- A hand lifting, she grasps hold of his shirt. (Please don't leave.)]

It's different... [Between her and Zero and her and father.] Would you so easily be able to tell your parents that they are dead, if they didn't experience that last fight? Or that Ichiru helped them walk down that aisle of death?

[To realize they left someone behind and so young, and that their other precious child helped orchestrate such a thing with their actual murderer.]

Of course he's asked about you too. [There's no way he wouldn't. Fingers clenching, she swallows thickly.] I told him how we met. At the academy... that the chairman took guardianship over you, and that we grew up together. I haven't told him anything differently about that. Other than... other than myself.

Because my feelings for you will never change. Even if we have things we disagree on, you're the only one I'll ever want and love.

[Ah. He wasn't able to bite back that word this time. Probably the first time, too. He knows far too well of the plain fact that she isn't ready to hear it. No matter how much she already knows and can feel within his blood.

He catches her hand within his own not too long after she reaches to take his sleeve. The move is silent, but likely one she isn't surprised of.

Nevertheless, he does stall a little when she brings up his own family. His expression, nor the tone in his voice, noticeably less harsh, and instead more melancholy. Even despite his reply.]

I'd tell them if they wanted to know. I feel I would. But I'd tell them at the beginning that it's not something they would like at all. I think I'd let them make their own choice.

[Maybe it's because he inherently knows that they would still accept him. They might be pained, but they also know that Zero has always been very truthful.]

I— My parents knew very well of the life that hunters lead. Maybe even especially them; they were gone on missions, and caught up with work so often that sometimes we would go a few days at a time without even seeing them. For them to so easily die is something they had accepted. [His brows crease. The hold he has upon her hand tightens a little.] Although about Ichiru. . .of course they would be more devastated and pained by the part he played, just as well as how the rest of his life played out.

[His answer is longer than he had planned to give her, but it's just the truth. It's to make a point, but not exactly a way to get her to rethink her decisions, even if he wanted it to be that way.

He wants to comment on if her father realizes yet what their relationship is like - more than just friends, but also too complicated for any words at all, especially any actual labels. And just what would he say? He feels already that Haruka wouldn't like the idea at all.

So all he'll ultimately say is something more simple.]

Truths eventually come out in time. Wouldn't it be more difficult like that?

[As the first couple tears trickle down her cheeks, she wonders in the moment if there will be a day where she doesn't cry. Even just one. The morning has been a happy one, but she can't disguise the fact that her heart is pained over this.

The fact is, while she doesn't want to tell her father the truth of things, it hurts just as much hiding it all, too. Tears welling up, she swallows down the emotion that chokes her.]

How...? [She has to take a deep breath, doing her best to keep her lips from trembling. Her efforts are unsuccessful] Because of me, they died. They had wanted to protect me. [Insomuch that her mother had taken her very own life to simply seal her within a human body. And now here she is, a vampire once more and their deaths irreversible.

She trembles from the effort of remaining quiet, her eyes shinning wet with tears, her vision blurring as it clouds over. Fingers curling, her hand clutches his so tightly that her knuckles turn white.]

Look at me... [A whisper, as though ashamed.] I failed. I... [She couldn't keep Kaname happy and her family together.] I couldn't make things better. I couldn't stop Kaname. [And she had tried. With all her heart she had tried.]

What's more-

[Teeth grit, her head lowers in shame, bangs falling across her face. Her tears splash the kitchen floor.]

Mother sacrificed herself. S-She didn't have to die. She made me human. But father loved mother more than anything in the world...

[Does he understand the fear that lies beneath the surface? Kaname-- a person she had thought loved her more than anything in the world, that they would be together forever, had left her.

Knowing what part she played in her mother's death, would her father even be able to look at her the same again?]

If father turned away from me, I... [She doesn't know how to emotionally handle it right now. Even if it's purely selfish.]

[By now Zero is used to her responding in this kind of way, just as he is of wanting so desperately to settle her. He tries so hard, but more often than not, it's always the same. He could get angry with her - most people very likely would, and even give up on her - but to him, that option does not exist. It never has, and never will.]

It's never been your fault.

[He says once more. So many of their conversations have resulted with him telling her so, in one way or another. This weight is not all on her shoulders (maybe even not at all).

His hand shifts a little in hers, returning the squeeze.]

Your mother. . . that had been something she had wanted for, didn't she?

[He knows enough through the Association's records. Maybe even more so because they were a part of the Kuran family.]

She wanted to give you a life where you could live without worries. You didn't cause any of it, Yuuki.

[He could comment on how it echoes exactly what Yuuki, herself, wants to do with Kaname, but for Juri it had been different. He's aware of that much.

More so could he tell her that her mother was so old by that point. She had wanted to give Yuuki a gift, even if, but the time she would remember, it would break her heart. At least that's what he believes. It doesn't need to be spoken aloud.]

He won't. [He says with no doubt.] If he loves you even a fraction as much as I've heard him say so. . . the very last thing he would do is push you away. You're his one and only precious daughter.

[Lifting a free hand up, she rubs at her eyes a moment. All of what he says which she wants to believe. Her memories of her father were never tainted with a thought of dislike. He had always cherished and protected her. He had always made her feel loved, and special, and expressed just how much he enjoyed her company.

The fact that he had initially doubted her presence here was because he had been worried for her, right?

It's just difficult and painful. Kaname had been someone she never believed would leave her behind. She had always thought they would walk through eternity together, and she would get to spend with him the rest of her days. And yet how so much has changed. ]

I'm just... happy. [Quietly, her voice soft when she speaks again.] To see father again, to have Ai-chan, and Zero, too. [All of them are precious to her.]

I'm scared that when I wake up, those things most precious to me will vanish. It's frightening. [She clutches the fabric over her heart tightly. Just thinking about it makes her feel as though there's a vice squeezing her chest.] I don't want to look up some day, and realize that I'm all alone again, with no one to turn to.

[She's blessed to have had such a relationship with her father (with both parents, and the Chairman as well). Even if it was for such a short period of time. To a degree it's something Zero might have envied; his parents were so often gone. But that would only make it sound as though they were never around to begin with, or that they never loved he and Ichiru with all they had.

He wishes so desperately that he could take away all of her misery and pain.]

We all are, as well.

[He holds her closer.]

Hold onto everything with all you have. I know in the end there's no promise when it comes to this place, but. . . back home, I'll do anything I can to stay by your side. And the knowledge that Ai will be a part of your future. You're going to be okay.

[Eyes closing, she nods against him. She'll cling to that with all she has, because that hope is the one thing that can see her through. With a watery smile, she murmurs against him.]

I'm sorry. Thank you for always being here for me.

It's all right.

Mm... [A quiet sound, before, at last, she pulls away.]

Come on. We should finish up. If not, I think we'll worry the kids around. [And her father.]

Yeah, we should.

[This is meant to be an enjoyable and relaxed day, so of course.]
