Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Wildcard

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[The hesitation only grows, and she glances at him again, her brows knitting. No matter what she says, it wont be easy to explain. He'll be upset, and frustrated, but... of all things, she thinks it's safe to tell him this, even though it will be difficult for him to swallow.

Although she assures him to begin with.]

It's all right. I held my own through it all. [During all that happened, she isn't nearly as easy to hurt as the humans.] But-- [There's guilt, too. The reason the school was attacked, was due to her presence there, right...?]

. . . The previous head of the Hunter's Association had joined forces with a pureblood. He thought that by drinking that person's blood, he could grow in strength, so helped attack. [Unhappy her gaze falls inward, staring blindly at the sheets beneath them.]

Actually it was... [ . . . She really hates recounting this day. The day Ichiru died. The day her and Zero separated, and her whole world changed all over again. When she finally opens up more, her voice is quiet.]

Uncle Rido attacked... [And she doesn't think she has to explain why he would.] He... brought a number of individuals with him. The night class was able to protect the humans there. In the end, one student lost their life though.

[It's hard, he can tell. She seems to hesitate, reluctant, saying the details only as far as she needs to, elaborating when she thinks he'll ask.

It should be more surprising that the Hunter's Association president was corrupted by the song of a pureblood's blood, but few can resist, no matter who they are. It's an accursed thing, so tempting, and while it's miracle properties are sung praises, no one realizes the curse it is.

Rido turns this from a fairy tale to a horror story, his stomach twisting tight and his chest aching fiercely. He's surprised that the only casualty was one, where his brother is concerned. He knows why... why Rido attacked, why Rido would put so much on the line, so callous in regards to life, as long as he got what he wanted. When did his big brother become so twisted?]

... I'm sorry.

[It should have been he, as the second oldest, to take care of Rido, back when he stole his first son. If they had dealt with Rido, as they should have, it could have been prevented.]

That is not something any of you should have had to endure.

[But his words really can't change what's happened, won't bring back the poor child lost in that battle or erase the damage done. There is something she says that gives him just a glimmer of hope, though.

The night class, which he assumes is vampires from the names she gave as she tried to reestablish it, protected humans. They used their strength, against a pureblood, for the sake of humans.]

If you're reestablishing, then Rido oniisama is no longer a threat. [And Haruka's not sure how he feels about that, whatever the outcome may be. Of course, he truly wants his children safe, no matter what he must do, but that is his brother and... it's all really such a complicated mess.] So then... tell me about school. What's it like?

[It may be painful for him to think about. Yuuki knows that, no matter what, it's difficult to detach yourself from the love of a sibling. In regards to her uncle, though, he had truly been deranged. She only nods curtly at his assertion.

Rido is dead, killed by herself with the help of another. But she can't feel guilty about it, not even a little. She's not sure what kind of monster that makes her, but he had destroyed her life. That man is the reason she lost the person here before her. The reason her sanity had fled for a while, and why Zero lost his brother. If he was to arrive here again, there would be little hesitation in her hand. Even despite what the defense force might say.

Not one more person will be taken due to his madness.

But then, he's asking about school again. She has to think for a moment, before she decides with a little honesty again.]

I enjoy school. [She's just not very good at it.] My best friend is a human girl named Sayori, and she's a dear friend. [She misses her of course. It just isn't very safe for them to visit all that often. Her brows knit again after a moment, however.]

Recently I... left again though.

[Haruka wouldn't blame anyone, including Yuuki, for her feelings regarding her Uncle. She wasn't able to feel anything for him, he being the biggest part of the reason they kept her locked away, hidden from everyone and everything. Rido didn't allow the family that he had to be whole. Even when competing for Juri's love, he looked up to his brother.

But it's Rido's own doing, and if he's dead, it was also his choice. Haruka won't make excuses for his big brother, even if it might pain him to think of his death. It pains him more to think that his daughter ever had to be faced with his brother's selfish desires.]

You are just like your mother.

[Which is to say, she makes friends out of anyone, human, vampire, even those who try to kill her.]

So you left school?

[Putting the unpleasantness of Rido aside, he cuddles back up to hear more of her adventure. He can deal with his personal feelings later, when he is alone and has time to worry about them.]

[She takes it as a compliment that he finds her to be similar. Although she thinks she has poor luck in making friends, she's content with the ones she has. She smiles briefly, though it fades after a moment. He might not really like her reasons for leaving.]

It's not something I really wanted to do. [Although she's the one who ran off of her own volition. The hunter's didn't have the man power to really stop her, either. Not to mention she doesn't think they saw her as the biggest threat by that point.]

Things have become really unstable. The hunter's association was destroyed. [Which is no small thing. But this, too, she thinks she can tell him. She wants to be as honest as she can be. ] They're in a panic, and most of their weapons have been destroyed. Meanwhile, vampires with bad intentions in their hearts have taken the opportunity to play on that chaos. Everyone's been doing what they can, but it hasn't been easy.

[For as wary as he is of the association, it's a devastating blow to society, to the peace the Kuran and their Pureblood friends have sought for as long as he can remember. What's happening, now, that could cause society to begin collapsing? There is a delicate balance that must be perserved, between the Senate and the Association, and if one should lose any ground, he fears the other will take over and rule as they see fit. Sadly, far too many don't feel they should coexist with humans, on both sides.]

It's all falling apart... [That's not the world he and Juri wanted Yuuki to be introduced in. It was supposed to be happy...] But Yuuki. You understand that isn't your responsibility, don't you?

[Haruka props himself up on an elbow, careful in tone. He's not trying to insult her. It really just shouldn't be her concern, as troublesome as it is.]

You should only worry about school. Your mother and I, Kurosu, Isaya and Aidou. It's the duty of the older generation.

[ . . . But he's not there. Not mother, father, or Aidou-dono...

Everything that has happened is because of her. It's her fault. Her parents aren't there to help deal with it because they had died protecting her. And she had been so embarrassingly inept as a fiancee. She had tried so hard to make Kaname happy. She had wanted nothing more than to walk at his side for eternity.

But he had decided things were too dangerous. It was their presence at the association that had destroyed the place. And in order to protect her he had pledged to kill the rest of the pureblood. And then, in the end, he had sacrificed himself. Fixing the problems should have been her responsibility. She was the cause. The cause of the tragedy that struck Zero's family, the death of the senate-- everything had always been done to protect her.

If it hadn't been her responsibility, it would have been easier. But she had failed. In the end, everything still fell apart. She hadn't been able to protect anyone. Including Kaname.

The tears that abruptly sting her eyes are unwanted, her gaze shining wetly. Blinking them away, she lifts a hand to wipe at her eyes.]

Sorry- [She laughs without any amusement. Glancing away, she forces a smile, embarrassed by her inability to reign in her emotions.] You're right. I know that, I just worry. Mother and father know how to handle all of this a lot better than I do though. It's really overwhelming.

[It's difficult for her to discuss, that much is obvious. He doesn't understand why, but he holds his tongue on asking why, because he's already seen her cry and he doesn't have the heart to make her do so again.

Instead, lowers himself, using his arm as a pillow, other hand between them. There's much about the future that seems so uncertain, so much more unstable than he ever thought it would be, but maybe it's enough right now.]

[She hates crying in front of him. He must think of her as such a child. The conversation shift is welcomed, and rubbing at her eye (He wont believe her if she claims it to be dust, will he...) she nods.

Clearing her throat, she makes an effort to focus on the question at hand, and not think about the rest. At least her best friend is a happy topic.]

Mm. Yori-chan was my first friend. [It feels like a life time ago now.] I haven't gotten to visit much with her lately, but she is aware of the existence of vampires. After the attack on the school, most everyone had their memories erased. But because she was a precious friend of mine, they allowed her to keep them.

[She makes a face, lifting a hand to her head.] Although she can be stubbornly reckless. She showed up to my introduction to society. I had no idea she was going to be there [The hunter's brought her...] But it definitely wasn't the sort of place she should have been. The whole thing made my heart pound to begin with, but I was really worried about her. [And rattled by other things, but-- well she doesn't need to get into those.]

[No matter how old she grows to be, to Haruka, she will always be his little girl. Even in a thousand years, he'll treat her the same. Kaname, too. That's just how her father is.

Sayori is brave, though. Walking into a den of hungry wolves, knowing how they surely covet her blood. He doesn't blame her, not entirely. While not safe, she clearly knew what she was doing. Reckless, yes, but it's a sign Yuuki has a good friend and her father would love to meet her, one day.]

She sounds like a very wonderful person.

Mm... You probably didn't get much of a chance to see him yesterday. [Yuuki monopolized her father.] He's living with us here in Marina, but we were friends back home.

[Even after everything, it somehow seems natural to live together here.]

Zero is... [She pauses a moment, as though unsure how to describe it.] Zero's my most important friend. We're best friends, and have known each other for a number of years now.

[How can she...describe Zero. All she can say is that he's someone she cares about and can't afford to lose again.]

We had a falling out for a while, but since Marina we've been able to move past things. From Zero's perspective, he thought we already had at home, too. [At least that's what he's told her. And considering Ai and how she speaks to him, she tends to agree.]

['Most important' friend. It's an important distinction that he makes note of. Kaname must be so jealous...]

He must be a good person, if Yuuki is so fond of him. [And of course, he's always worried about people around his little girl, but he won't dictate who she's friends with. That isn't his place and he would never be so cruel as to take her friends from her, when she lived so long without any.]

How did you meet?

[Falling out happens, and the issue of time will always remain an issue. That he can't solve, but he can listen to her fond memories, distract from anything painful.]

He is. [She nods, able to say honest as much. Through all their differences, Zero has proven time and again that at his core, he's a good and caring person. Even when he had been lost to the depths of anguish, and his heart frozen over.

It had never completely iced.

But how they met is challenging. And also, a tale of sorrow. His life has never once been easy.]

His parents were murdered by a pureblood. [Quietly spoken, her eyes creased. It brings with it a number of memories, but they're all heavy and emotionally charged.] Shizuka Hio took revenge upon them when they executed someone she had fallen in love with.

[Explaining who the event was actually orchestrated by is out of the question.]

Zero's twin brother went with her. Why, I still can't figure out myself. But Zero was attacked, and bitten. [The fact that he is alive today means that she doesn't have to explain what he is.]

He was brought to live with the chairman. For a long time, all he could talk about was revenge, and how he only wanted to rid the world of vampires. But since that time, he's grown and changed. He realizes now that not all vampires are like that, and no longer talks about extermination or the like.

[This world they're living and growing in. There are bound to be incidents, but so many, and in so few years for Yuuki.

Purebloods have never truly been tamed, but for the most part, they are those who want peace, or are those who sleep to combat their long years of loneliness. Haruka doesn't believe all of them feel that way, but he thinks those like Rido are few in number, compared to the well-behaved ones.

Shizuka is another name he recognizes. Caged from birth, she was forced to live under lock and key, to never have the freedom he and Juri had. Rido's intended, never given a choice... at least until a certain point in time that forced her into madness herself.]

No one should have to endure that. [The loss of parents, to be made into something like that without his permission. Even his brother leaving him behind. Anger and bitterness are expected.] You and that person took good care of him. You get that from your mother.

[Juri told him about that hunter. In her own words. It was more like 'he was being stupid and I knocked some sense into him' kind of thing, but Juri power!]

So, the Kiryuu twins are from a hunter family?

[Because Father did not miss that. Executing vampires isn't something normal humans can do.]

[With a cautious nod, she glances up at him to study his face. Knowing how protective her father is, she has to wonder what he thinks of her relationship with someone who is a hunter in general. But the circumstances are so different from how a relationship between one of the pureblood and a hunter would be. There's really no comparing.]

Zero is the future president of the Association. [There's a bit of a face... to be honest, she isn't overtly fond of most hunters, or how they've run their group over the years. While she will never deny the need for such an existence, she also doesn't believe it should be legal to kill a vampire when one feels like it. Or that it be perfectly legal to arrest someone without any proper motive.]

He's still in school at the moment, though... which is why the chairman is working in his place right now. Not that they don't still drag him out to do a number of things that he shouldn't have to...

[Grumble grumble... Isn't it wrong that adults would force a bunch of kids to 'hunt' anyway? Even if Zero goes along with it. His idea of self-preservation has always been horrible anyway.]

An ex-human is the future president?

[Times have changed, if they're going to allow that. The mere thought of a vampire in their midst was once a taboo, and at any gatherings, they mostly seemed to be filled with disdain, wishing for a reason to use their weapons.

It's a good thing, to be sure, but... Haruka's had time to adjust to Kaien. Zero isn't Kaien, Haruka doesn't know him, what he stands for. Yuuki can tell him, of course, but a hunter is trained to kill vampires, trained to resist their 'charms' and they are equipped with the means to do it.

He worries, of course. His daughter's life and happiness are the most important thing, but he can only be an observer. She has a history with him, it's her choice. He will be wary, he will protect her, but at the moment, he tries to hide that he's uncomfortable with the idea until he has a chance to learn about Zero himself in present day.]

Is that why you think he does it? [He doesn't mean that Zero might still be focused on revenge. He's pretty sure, by Yuuki's story, that he's got another idea in mind. Besides, you children don't seem to be the sort to sit back and relax. You all live for adventure.]

So you have Sayori and Zero and Aidou, yes? What of Kaname? [Is he still disagreeable? He assumes yes. But he wants to hear about his children regardless.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Why Zero hasn't rejected the idea of it...? Well... [She doesn't know for sure. To be fair, she doesn't think he's a huge fan of vampires in general. And even now, she doesn't think he holds very much love for the pureblood.

It's only that he doesn't hate her. And he doesn't think they all deserve to die indiscriminately any more. After a moment of thought, she shakes her head.]
I think... he feels there are still people who need to be protected. [Uncertain, she lifts her shoulders.] The people there don't treat him very kindly in my opinion, but they... prefer to follow someone who they feel is unusually strong.

[Which Zero certainly is. And she doesn't think it's only just because of what transpired between himself and his twin.] Zero's unusually resistant against the pureblood. I don't think that he's a person who any vampire of any level could take for granted.

[Not even someone as strong as them. Their powers can probably overwhelm him, but it's not as though he doesn't have surprises of his own. It's strange to talk about Zero like this. For the longest time, he was the most consistent thing in her life, until he wasn't.

But then, the question she's been dreading for a while finally arises. It's doubly difficult, because she has to try and remain as unaffected as she can, when really, just the mention of him tears at her heart. Quiet for a beat, she has to physically force herself to breath calmly and evenly. In reality, it feels as though there's a lump in her throat.]

What would you like to know about Oniisama?

[Gaze on the sheets, she trails one of her nails along the bed between them in a circle. It's something to focus on.]

Neither Zero or Oniisama get along very well. [Which maybe distracts from the state of their own relationship.]

[Haruka doesn't know Zero very well, so he can't say with any certainty, really. It's only the way Yuuki talks about him that there might be more behind his motivations than just revenge, or just protecting. He's sure those two things play a big role, but the words 'important' friend make him wonder just how important and if there isn't more she just hasn't said. She's told him more about this Zero than Kaname, so far.

And as she continues, answering his question with one of her own, he can't help but wonder. Yuuki and Kaname were once inseparable. Whenever Kaname was in the room, Yuuki's eyes lit up and she would always gravitate to her brother. He wanted them to be close, and if they loved each other as he and Juri loved each other, he would more than encourage it. After all, there are so very few he would ever think to trust Yuuki with, and Kaname was number one.

He says nothing more on the first subject, curious about the second. What she chooses to tell him is no surprise, but of all the things to say, why that? What about how Kaname is doing, or what it's like going to school with him, or any number of things? Zero and Kaname...

Her father smiles anyway, knowing, understanding.]

Kaname is jealous.

[He knows, because Kaname's precious person is Yuuki, and has been since she was born. Kaname has always looked out for her, taken care of her, eased her loneliness, more than even her parents could. But he wonders what's happened between them, what rift is there, because Yuuki would not stop when it came to Kaname and now, it's like grasping for straws to get any information whatsoever.]

Are you two fighting about it? He's probably just worried.

[In the past, had Kaname been jealous over her relationship with Zero? In some aspects, it's difficult to picture. And yet, in others... his request that she only drink his blood, and other similar actions makes her wonder if perhaps he's exactly right.

But this subject is becoming more dangerous by the moment. Talking about it is painful from the start, but knowing what she's recently learned from Zero and Ai makes it heart wrenching. If she's not careful, her emotions will get the better of her.]

Recently, oniisama and I have fought a lot. [Not about Zero, no. But it's no lie that they've been at odds. In much bigger ways than just their relationship.]

But I agree that... he worries in his own way. [Her words are softly spoken. Even if she doesn't agree with the actions he takes due to those concerns of his, she knows deep down he's still worried.]

[Her voice is quiet, and though he can hear it, he doesn't hear exactly what he wants to hear. There's no happiness in her words, not even an inkling that it's something normal. In their turbulent lives, though short, Haruka expects them to argue. Even he and Juri disagree - such is a natural part of living with someone, loving them and wanting them safe, but happy too.

That isn't what Yuuki wants to hear, of course, he's sure. Who wants to know that while the future is always brighter with that one person, there will always be rainy days?

He brushes her hair back, or running his fingers through it to be soothing. And ever patient, he watches her steadily. Kaname's a difficult boy, always thinking about something, troubled, whose only light seems to be Yuuki. Haruka's memory is filled with the love and need the two had for each other, and whatever they're fighting about can surely be worked through.]

Be patient. He will come around. Kaname is a very difficult person, but he cares about Yuuki most.

[Closing her eyes against the gentle, comforting touch, she can imagine being young again. It's these same hands that once helped sooth away fears and worries, helped tuck her into bed at night, wiped her tears away when upset, and always assured her that everything would be all right.

Reaching up, she gently grasps his hand, pulling it down to rest her head against. She wants to protect him, and the memories he has of them before the last few minutes of his life. Parents only wish for the happiness and well being of their children, and she can't possibly bring herself to break his heart.]

I love Oniisama. So much that sometimes I feel like my heart might burst. My mind gets all cloudy and he takes over my thoughts.

[She doesn't know why. Even now, even knowing all of what will happen, and the pain experienced, it's somewhat of a spell he has upon her. No matter how much she tries, she can't fully change her heart.]

For me, I just want a future where I can be surrounded by all of the people that I love the most.

[He feels nothing but contentment when she takes his hand, rests against it. She accepts him, completely, and he wants to do the same. He forgets for a moment that he's not talking to the daughter of his memories because it feels like then, the happy days that are far behind this child here. There are the swells of pride, the regret and guilt, the happiness he should feel if this really were his daughter and it's disorienting when he stops and he looks at her, really looks at her.

Maybe that's all he really needs, though. Nothing false could give the same feeling as what he feels watching her struggle through this life she was not prepared for. A parent should recognize their child, and though she's older, she's matured, she's seen a world he hasn't, he still feels it deep inside that she's the little girl who cuddled up for story time, who listened intently to whatever they were telling her, who cried and laughed and smiled so brightly despite all that she wasn't allowed to be a part of.

He wants so much to have the memories she has, so he might better help her. All he can do is watch patiently and hope the answer comes, that he'll be able to one day see it, too, so she won't have to feel so alone in this.]

You may fight and argue, and you may be mad at him or hate something that he's doing, but you'll always still love him. No matter what happens, I don't think that will ever change.

[It never does. He and Juri don't always agree, no relationship is free of tension, but that doesn't mean he loves her any less. It only grows, when that tension fades and they come to terms with it. And whatever Kaname and Yuuki are going through, they will work through it, in whatever way they choose. This he believes.]

And one day, you will have that happy future you want.

[He can't imagine anything less, for her.]

I met a part of it yesterday... Ai. [She's the perfect mix of Kaname and Yuuki.] My precious daughter becomes a wonderful mother.

... It feels strange to say that.

[There's much she has to remain quiet on, and she hates keeping it from him. In the end, she just nods quietly, her eyes closed as she still holds onto the warmth of his hand. She will have a future. But that person will no longer be a part of it. But how she wishes that was a time she has to look forward to.

Instead, Ai is what she can focus on. Her lips finally curl up into a bit of a smile and her eyes peak open to find him again.]

If father was surprised to see me yesterday all grown, just imagine my surprise to realize I have a fifteen year old daughter, when I'm only seventeen myself.

[It's... a lot to think about. Even now.]

I hope that Ai-chan feels as though I've been there for her though. It's difficult to keep in mind that I'm actually her mother when we're almost the same age. [It's a lot to wrap her head around. Especially when she feels like she doesn't have any amount of control in her life currently.]

Also that child is so much like Kaname-oniisama. She can be really serious, independent, and she's excellent at school. I keep wondering in what way I can help her.

[D-Defeated...]

I tried to offer her help with school work, but... she finishes everything before me, and then points out whenever I make a mistake in my own papers. [She just wants to look knowledgeable in front of her daughter sob]
