Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

Four years ago a virus spread over the world but it only infected people who were thirteen or older. Then the vampires came to collect the children and take them down to their underground city.... well, that's what happened to us.

[He can't speak for other parts of the world or even all of Japan, just what happened to the Hyakuya kids and some of the others brought down to the city. Mika is... not very well educated when it comes to the news happening above ground.]

They used to say that if you turned thirteen and lived on the surface that the virus would get you too.

[With Mika and Yuu as twelve year olds, well, one might think they wouldn't risk going topside.

In response to the offer being open, Mika gives a non-commital hum. If he did ever take up the offer, it would be a long time from now. Though maybe there is something Zero can help with right at the moment.]

Where do the vampires here get their blood?

[Because there are vampires here. If they were doing bad things, Zero would hunt them, right?

Mika notices the look Zero gets when he talks about Yuuki. Which just brings on the questions only children can ask so innocently.]

Is she your wife?

[Well, he's never seen either of his parents look so.... happy when talking about the other. Maybe that's what love between two adults is supposed to look like.]

I'm better at taking care of myself than Yuu-chan is. [Doesn't get stupidly reckless all of the time, just sometimes. Mika doesn't move an inch when the hand comes down on his head - he doesn't even breath. As if he's waiting for... something terrible to happen.] Yuu-chan... he's gonna look up to you. He's wanted to kill vampires for a long time and you hunt vampires.

[It wouldn't surprise him at all if Yuu started asking for lessons sometime soon.]

[What, really, is there to say to such a thing? It isn't something Zero can even imagine, let alone fully wrap his around. Nor can he imagine just what those kids - Mika, Yuu, all of them - must have been through. It's no wonder they were how they were upon arriving just yesterday.]

I'm sorry. . .

[Zero finds himself saying before he can even think much on it. Even despite feeling like pity isn't something that's wanted. That had been their life. Similar could be said if another had that reaction upon learning about Zero's own history: he doesn't to be felt sorry for. Not back then, when he had been nothing but angry and in pain, while not now - even if for completely different reasons. As he's told Yuuki: he wouldn't turn back if he could. The other day during that sort-of "What If" situation— even if he had the option to, he wouldn't have chosen it. The life he has now is the one he's fine with. Even despite everything.

In this moment he wonders if Mika will ever reach a state of acceptance. Even if it does take a great while.

For now he'll focus on what's happening in the here and now. The mention of blood being the first time today where Mika has spoken up about the matter.]

There's an establishment called the Blood Shack. There's the option of human, animal, and synthetic. [He pauses in thought. There's a way to work around this- ] There's also something called blood tablets available at one of the shops. They're little pills that dissolve in water and work in a way that helps to curb the vampire's thirst. They're something that comes from my world, as at one point apparently there had been a couple of vampires from home who were here. The tablets are still around, for whatever reason.

You're welcome to any of those options. And if you'd rather not go to the Blood Shack yourself, I can stop in to find something for you.

[No lie. However this is also said because although Spike isn't going to attack, he's. . . really not the most pleasant person to be around. Vampire or not.

It's the question about Yuuki that catches him even more off guard, however. Enough to have his eyes widen, and practically needing to stifle a laugh. Nothing against Mika. . . especially with what he'll reply with.]

No, but. . . [He hopes for her to be, even if it's far, far along the line. Still he'll be very open with the boy. Even going so far as being a little playful by leaning closer and holding a finger to his lips. Like it's some secret just between them.] I love her with all my heart. She's my light, and means more to me than anything in the entire world.

[He feels for Yuu already. Right along with (still) Mika.]

If that's so, then I hope I can be as good as my Master was to me.

[Honestly there's nothing to really say about all of it. The only person Mika lost that day was the caretaker of the orphanage and while he'd care for her as the only adult who'd ever cared for him - it hadn't been that sad.

So he shrugs in disinterest at Zero's apology.

Things had been bad when living under the vampire's control but they were together - all the children. Food was bad, giving blood was painful, times were hard but they still had each other. They still laughed and cried and were a family. It wasn't perfect but it was... better than this. At least that's how he feels at the moment.

Already Mika has a leg up on Zero's progress. He doesn't want revenge on the vampire who killed his family. He doesn't hate vampires. Just himself.

One of his fingers pokes at the hole in the knee of his jumpsuit and he's only asking because it's become a need. A need he'll have to fulfill at some point because he's not taking the chance of accidentally biting Yuu or anyone else.

Mika listens as the hunter tells him all about the kind of options available. Already he knows he's going to be avoiding the first one. No human blood for him. So he'll just end up trying everything else to see how it works. A small frown.] What's in the blood tablets?

[What kind of blood is it? Why are they still around if there aren't any vampires from Zero's world? Was it just for the other vampires who were here or were there maybe other vampires who were here?]

I can go by myself. Thanks.

[He might... wait a couple of days before going to the Shack. Wait until he's no longer crying at random before he has to face the fact that going in there is a necessity. Maybe they have vampire blood available. That seemed to work last time for him.

It's kind of funny how he's gotten the teen to actually look surprised. Nothing yesterday really seemed to do it but apparently talking about Yuuki did the trick.

Mika actually lifts his head to look at Zero.] Then why don't you ask her to marry you if she means that much to you?

[Wouldn't that be what most people did if they loved someone that much?]

You better take good care of him. [It's probably not very threatening... having a twelve year old (even if he is a vampire talking to a vampire hunter) make that kind of statement but honestly, the only thing Mika has left to lose is the other boy and there is absolutely nothing that he is going to let hurt Yuu.]

[Such self-hatred is something Zero has gone through all the same. Zero has to wonder if, one day along the line, he's able to help Mika with it. To tell him that there's still the possibility that he may become stronger, and not simply in a physical way. How he can relate to the boy over their shared experience of the specific similarity in the way they were turned.

. . .Granted, this is only when he and Yuu learn the truth. Which is bound to come out, be it sooner or later. Zero hopes it's the former, but at the same time, he already wants to tell them. It isn't fair; especially not when both of them have begun to trust he and the others.

As for the blood tablets, though. It might confuse a child, given how much science goes into them.]

They're made up of a certain type of cell. [Maybe he shouldn't say that they were first created by a few vampires a number of years back.] Of DNA, and the like. These are from humans, but do also contain elements of a vampire's composition.

[Ah. Yuuki, though. . .]

All I can say is things are very complicated. [Quite unfortunately, even though he can recognize why, and to be patient. No matter how trying it can get.] Some day, I hope. What matters most is our shared feelings. We don't need an official label.

I will. I absolutely promise to you that I'll do good by him.

[It is definitely something that he can't have someone else do for him, Mika will have to get through it on his own when he thinks it's possible. Right now he's a mess of emotions - hatred and guilt, happiness and relief, grief and loss, cautious and vulnerable. They've left him so raw that it's hard to settle on any one feeling.

Maybe he'll just run out of emotions after all of this. Maybe he'll just become numb. His life has never been perfect but Mika had managed to smile through all the abuse and suffering. He feels like he might not ever be able to smile again.

So Mika is focusing on something else because he can't see a future for himself. Just make it through today.

Zero's right, it does confuse him but he does understand one thing - these blood tablets are made up of human parts.]

I don't want them. [There is absolutely no room for arguments in his words. He's made up his mind about them already.

"Complicated." As if Mika couldn't understand something just because it's complicated. But he doesn't say anything because in the end, it isn't really his business what they have with each other.] Oh.

[There's an implied whatever in his tone.]

Good cause I'll be watching. [Watching Zero, watching Yuu.]

[Whatever the case may be, Zero isn't one to be forceful with anything. So long as Mika is aware that there's support, should he ever change his mind. Zero knows first hand about not wanting to let others in, among other things.]

That's fine. You can find where the Blood Shack is on the map in your communicator. That, or I can show you.

I'm going to let you know now, though, that the one who runs it is a vampire. His name is Spike. He's a pain in the ass with a bad attitude, but he's not going to do anything. [The whole thing about souls is still odd, but then again, different worlds and all.]

Right, right. Just know that you're always welcome to join us. [To talk, to train, to learn. Anything.]

[At this point in time, Mika is extremely hesitant to depend on anyone. They don't really know anything about these people and for all he knows they could be lying about everything. After how careless he'd been with his plan to escape, Mika isn't about to make the same mistake again.]

I can find it on my own. I know how to read a map. [The words are... almost bitter - but they're directed at himself, not Zero.

He knows these people are doing their best to help but it's been an extremely long time since Mika has been able to trust an adult. Or even just someone who's older than him.

A small shrug of his shoulders.] Better than him pretending to be nice when he's really not. At least you know he's not nice from the start.

Yuu's the only one who wants to kill vampires. [Mika... Mika just doesn't care.]

[Not today, that's for sure. Mika is too cautious of everyone and too protective of Yuu and he's taking it out on Zero - he knows that.

There isn't really anything left to say about this "Spike" person but he's reluctant to leave the kitchen to go find Yuu. So his eyes slide to the side to focus in on... a cabinet. He chews on his bottom lip, not entirely careful with his fangs until he's already poked a hole in himself but Mika doesn't seem to care about that either.

There is one question but he's not sure he should ask it. So he stays quiet for a long time. Long enough Zero might have turned back to his task of making drinks by the time Mika decides it's okay to ask to the back of the hunter's head.] Do you think the wardens could make me human without the whole ankle thing?

[A pause where he inhales deeply.] Do you think they would?

[Zero really does (initially) go back to the drinks, if only because he wasn't going to try and persist with Mika. And yet when the boy does speak again, it's a question that perhaps he could have seen coming. One that he truly wishes he had a better answer for.]

There's the possibility that it's within their capabilities, but no. They wouldn't. Just as they won't give someone their memories so they could 'catch up' to a time point someone else from their home may be at.

[His hand tightens around the cup he's holding. He doesn't seem to realize just how tight until a crack can be heard. Any further and it would have completely shattered. At the least it was empty.]

I'm sorry that I can't give you the answers you're wanting to hear.

[He listens to the answer, not liking it at all because they can do it they just wouldn't. If he was holding something he could break, it'd be broken. Instead Mika settles for a heavy sigh.]

Figured as much. Not like I have any they'd want in return anyway.

[Nothing they don't already have. Mika would give up anything... anything but Yuu.

Blue eyes look up at the cracking of glass but he doesn't say anything in response to that bit.]

I know.

[He carefully makes his way to the trash bin to dispose of the glass. It really wouldn't have done any good if he were to cut himself.]

But I feel bad, anyway. You've been through enough, and deserve something nice for once. Although I'm glad you have Yuu.

[He doesn't need to state the obvious of how Mika should hold onto that with all he's got, and for Yuu to do so in turn. They already do.]

I don't want Yuu-chan to be here. [Mika admits quietly.] He'd escaped to the outside world and now he's trapped again.

Yuu-chan is... [A pause as he considers his next words carefully.] Yuu-chan is better off living under the sun. He shines brighter and burns hotter and so he shouldn't be buried underground or underwater. Even when it was so dark, we could all look to Yuu-chan and feel better.

But he's already here, now, right? You should embrace that all the same.

[As Zero could say similarly about Yuuki. She doesn't belong here, but since she is, he isn't going to let that go. Not even a second will he take her for granted.

It does take a bit of effort at the starts for Zero to not reply to those words with how, yes, he thinks the very same of Yuuki.]

This place still shouldn't exist at all.

[He's never going to fully push Yuu away again. They've done that once and even if Mika tries, his friend will be extremely stubborn about it this time. But as long as they're here together, Mika is going to do everything to protect the last of his family. Even if it means protecting the other boy from him.

Mika lets his head drop to rest on his arms, speaking into his own curled form.]

People who do bad things deserve to go to prison. [He fully believes he deserves to be here.]

[Mika's actions do say far more than his words. To a degree Zero wonders if he's fully aware of that.]

If you say that, then a majority - if not all - of us do not deserve to be here.

[He sounds more harsh than he means to.]

Not you, not Yuu, not me, Yuuki, Ai. . . Even those who are dead back home, or close to it, have been brought to this place. Such as my brother.

[He adds the latter without much thought.]

They don't look at the details of our crimes, Mika; they hardly care about context. None of it. I was listed for murder on [many] multiple accounts because of what I do for a job. Another was for being late to school, and not returning a book to the library on time. Even the smallest of white lies is something they would count.
