Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Wildcard

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[He seems like an okay person. Yuuki allows him to stay, and they at least seem close. It just looks like a family making breakfast together - Zero, Ai and Yuuki. It's Kaname he expects to be there, but there's more that Yuuki isn't telling him, he's aware of that. What pieces is he missing where Kaname and Zero fit in?]

They're adorable working together, aren't they.

[Not so much a question, as an observation. It's not so easy a thing to accept, a daughter thirteen years older than he remembers, and with a daughter of her own, but accept it he will, for Yuuki's sake.

... he still wants to pick her up to help her reach high shelves though.]

Would you fill me in on some things? Yuuki told me some things, but some I want to hear from you.

[Nothing big! Maybe.]

Who are you to them?

[Yuuki told him that they were close, friends from Kaien's school, but he can't hide the scent all over him. She might be taking care of him, keeping him from looking elsewhere, but he's not going to assume anything.]

[Zero can't help but initially glance over to the others again, and there's no hiding the affection in the way he does so.

He doesn't jump right into answering the first question, however. There are things Yuuki has shared, and things she has not. Which still is so very little, so far as he's aware of.]

What has she told you?

[He asks regardless.

Again there's a pause. There's no use in lying, though.]

Yuuki. . . she means more to me than I know how to say. She's more important than I am to myself.

[Which in other words can be read into as how he's so wholly in love with her.]

From the moment I had lost everything she was my light, and what kept me afloat.

And Ai. . . she's like a daughter to me as well.

[He doesn't miss it, not in the way he says those words. Haruka's less sure how to take that than he is Yuuki right now. He had never thought there would be anyone other than Kaname and Yuuki, with the rest of their world clinging on for the pure blood running through them. A false love, an obsession, but this doesn't seem like that.

But Yuuki and Kaname have a daughter, so is it unrequited?]

She told me you were close. School friends.

[But there was so much, and while Yuuki is a terrible liar, Haruka didn't force many issues, where Yuuki was concerned. It's already overwhelming, it didn't seem appropriate to push too hard for more.]

She didn't seem to want to give me too much information too soon. [Though he really wouldn't mind more story time.] Besides, I thought it best to ask you about something like that.

[He pauses, processing what he's been told since he woke up this morning.]

I want to be able to trust them with someone else. Yuuki deserves that. Are you someone I can trust?

[It might seem like a pointless question, because Haruka really doesn't trust much of anything right now, but he asks, just to hear and see the depth of the answer, so maybe he can work towards it. Juri was happy with people other than him and as much as it bothered him, he liked seeing her happy more. The same can be said for Yuuki.]

[It's far from being unrequited. Even Yuuki would be able to admit that (even if in her own way), but also far, far too complicated to really get into. Things are so simple, yet a complete mess. The one thing they can both agree upon is how there's no real label as to "what" they are.

Ah. School friends, though. . .]

Yeah. [he stalls.] After my family had been killed I was taken in by Kaien Kurosu, the Chairman of the Academy. He's close acquaintances with my Master.

[Which to a degree he still kind of thinks it's because his Master simply couldn't fully take care of him, despite having been one of his guardians for years.]

Yuuki and I were prefects for some time. [Again he pauses. He really isn't positive of exactly what Yuuki has mentioned already. At the same time, it's a challenge to work around.] . . . When the school had been attacked by a pureblood, among a number of others, she and I, along with the Night Class, protected it.

[No. It really isn't pointless. He understands completely.]

I am. Even if you have a hard time believing it immediately, or if there's any way I can prove it to you. . . I promise I am. Should you ask them, as well, both Yuuki and Ai will say the same.

[Haruka doesn't really intend to hit on any sore subjects with him. There's already enough uncertainty and anguish under that beautiful, sunny veneer, from the things Yuuki has told him. A terrible thing, for anyone to endure, especially one so young.]

My condolences, for your parents. [All he's said is the abridged version. It's really Zero's business what he wants to disclose. Haruka's a stranger, after all, and he understands wanting to keep some things private.] Kaien is a good man, though.

[Strong, so he is all right sending Yuuki to that academy, as long as Kaname is there.

The Rido battle is a touchy one, but he supposes it's not anyone's fault but his own.]

Yuuki told me about oniisama. I'm sorry that you children were forced to correct our mistake. But thank you.

[That, is, at least, genuine. He deeply regrets Rido's actions, and allowing Rido to even be in a position to be a threat to Yuuki but, he owes anyone involved a debt he can't repay.

His eyes focus on the young man, searching him carefully, before looking back to the girls as they work. It's so important that they be loved and cared for. Yuuki has always been his everything, a child he would sacrifice his life for, if necessary, and if Ai is his daughter's daughter, he will do the same for her.]

Show me by making sure they are happy. That is all I could ever ask for. One day, maybe I can accept it, if you do only that.

It's in the past, which I've come to accept. But thank you.

[He really is just fine with stating what simply is the truth. Although Zero is also positive that Haruka would recognize Shizuka Hiou's name.

The mention of Kaien has Zero both slightly amused, however also the opposite. He still remembers how the older hunter nearly had Yuuki - one of his most precious people, turned back into a human. Although Zero has other mixed feelings as well.

Ah. He knows of Rido, then.]

Yuuki and I. . . and the others in the Night Class, we did what we had to. Just as we had to keep him from Yuuki at all costs.

[He doesn't regret killing the pureblood, and knows Yuuki feels the exact same. While at the same time, the fact that he parted ways with Yuuki that night (extremely rough as that day had been to begin with). . .it's something Zero now regrets. And the only thing he regrets.]

I'll do so with every part of me, then.

[. . .leaving him to not have to change anything at all with how he treats the girls.]

[Haruka wouldn't say Kaien's made the best decisions in his life. When they met, he wasn't looking at his wife with adoring eyes, needless to say. But he's reliable, he's found. People change, though, and the future Yuuki speaks of is full or turmoil. How is his friend faring...?]

What was done had to be done. He made his decision. What matters is that you all survived.

[Except that one person...]

You're all pretty daring. Facing a pureblood on a missions is a reckless thing to do.

[They could have been slaughtered. Oh, he appreciates all that they did to protect her, he does! But is it safe, what if Yuuki wants to do dangerous things?

Haruka stops, considers something for a long moment and then... pats that silver head of hair. With a completely straight and oblivious face.]

You are a good person, Zero.

[All of his personally feelings over Kaien aside, Zero could at least say that the man isn't doing too bad. Things are just stressful. It is for all of them.

He (very faintly) smiles - or maybe it's something else - upon the mention of going against a pureblood.]

Between Yuuki and I we had the means- [hunter weapons] -to do so. Not that it wasn't difficult, of course.

[. . .while on a completely different note, he almost starts with the gesture. Or maybe even bristles. While also amused. Yagari would do so, but also- ]

. . .Yuuki often likes to do that. . .

[Like daughter like father??]

[Children will be children. The 'means' doesn't take that much to guess. Only a hunter's weapon can give another the edge against a pureblood. Yuuki has shown him Artemis.]

I'm sure it was. It's no easy task, even for a pureblood. [Head to head, Rido would probably win against him, it's no secret. That a group of children could take out his big brother, it's more impressive and worrisome by the minute.] The only advantage you could have. For you children, Artemis wouldn't be enough.

[Haruka's more looking to see if stories match at this point, based on questions he asks. He can only verify some of it, but so far, Zero's been very honest. It's a good thing, at least.

Ah, but he's clearly got thoughts about the head pat! Which is okay. At least he isn't randomly hugging him. Maybe one day.]

It's because she's fond of you and wants you to smile. Whenever she's sad or lonely, it always makes her feel better.

[And it's a sign, from Haruka, that he's okay with him being near. As a friend. And also that Zero should smile more. Smiling is good for the soul.]

[No. It really wouldn't have been enough. When it comes to Zero, personally, one of the main reasons he had been there at all was because Kaname couldn't kill that monster himself. Such manipulation is something he's somewhat let go of, even though in a general sense he'll never forgive him.]

Yeah. I know. And I always want to be able to make her happy. [However wry, then. Or maybe flat.] . . .although she also always declares herself as being a "big sis" to me, which is why she'll do so.

[Sorry, Haruka. It's far more than "friends." He'll smile, though. Just get him talking about how he feels towards her.]

[The future's a difficult story, and he knows he doesn't have all the details. What more is in their painful, stressful lives that they aren't telling him? Children...]

She is a very kind child. [So good, so precious.] It must make her very happy to help you.

[He's not ready to think about his daughter being more than friends with anyone. She's too young, he's not ready.]

Mm... [Thoughtful expression.] If she is a big sister to you, does that make me father? [Is Yuuki adopting people?]

Yes. Really.

[Honestly he's become curious, now, about just what that man was to both Haruka and Juri. For reasons (which Zero likely would understand), he's really never heard much about that at all. It was probably never intended. For the most part Zero learned about them via the records at the Association, along with what Yuuki has spoken of.]

He's very peculiar.

[A beat. Fine, he'll answer. Kind of. It's pretty flippant.]

See it however you want to. Like him, though, I'm not about to call you that.

[If anyone, Yagari was more like a father. At least in his own ways. Zero certainly has a great deal of respect for the man.]

[He wears an almost fond expression. 'Peculiar'... that's one way to put it.]

Peculiar can be good, sometimes.

[Thinking about it, though, maybe it's for the best. He'd be so disappointed, otherwise.]

I think maybe that's a good idea. Kaname would be angry.

[He knows Kaname and Zero don't get along, and making Kaname angry, though it's cute, is probably not the best.]

Still, you seem to fit in well here. My memories tell me it shouldn't be that way, but it's as if you'd always been here.

[Haruka isn't sure he likes the idea, but he's already agreed to sit and watch.]

[It's a (very good) thing that Zero is able to perfectly mask both his emotions as well as his thoughts. Otherwise, the remark about Kaname would have made him grimace. Or maybe show a sign of exasperation, instead.

Yuuki really needs to tell him, already.]

I'm glad I can be. [He briefly glances over to where Yuu and Mika are.] Same for those two. They deserve to have someone to be there for them.

[He follows that glance, just remembering the guests Yuuki is already so attached to.]

All children do. [That goes without saying.] Yuuki told me of them.

I'll do what I can, but to deceive those children, for any length of time...

[He pauses, eyes closing.]

In either case, I'll leave the handling of those children to you. Just tell me what I can do.

Yuuki, Ai, and myself. . . we have decided to tell them sooner rather than later. They've hardly been here for even a day; it'll only become complicated the longer we wait. It's not exactly a secret among others here that the three of us are vampires, but the anger and fear Mika and Yuu were expressing towards vampires made us hold off. Although I did express to them that I'm a hunter.

[He frowns a little.]

As for you, just be yourself. If the subject of vampires does come up, just say something along the lines of how you're aware of their existence back home. Comment on how you're [he just barely keeps himself from saying "were"] acquaintances with a hunter. —more importantly, too, try and pay close mind to not let your fangs show.

That's good. I think that's the best thing. Hiding it will do no good, especially if the wardens like to play with us.

[And they should be looked after, by those who genuinely care, vampire or not.]

But all of that, I can do. [His eyes open, gaze steady. He's hidden what he was before, though it feels so long ago now. It's not a problem.] I really didn't want to advertise who or what I am, anyway.

[It's actually kind of peaceful, all things considered. He likes the peace.]

Are you planning to teach them to be hunters?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

2016-09-25 12:12 am UTC (link)
Thank you. [He genuinely appreciates it.] I can understand keeping quiet about yourself. I had been surprised that others here already knew about me. Although I guess that makes sense. To be honest, I had been here before, and for quite a long time. I have no memories at all of it.

[Peace is about right. To a degree, even after a month, Zero isn't exactly sure what to do with so much free time.]

Actually. . . Mika was very recently turned back in his world. From what the two of them said, it's different compared to ours by a long shot. Hunters kill any vampires on the spot; to say where they're from is strictly black and white would be an extreme understatement. I expressed to them how in my world, not all vampire wish to cause trouble, and would rather keep to themselves, instead of attacking as they please. Neither of the boys could grasp that concept at all.

As for Yuu, though, he did ask me to teach him, yes. Which I told him I can do, but not solely in order to kill vampires, and more along the lines of self defense. Honestly, I wouldn't mind helping them in varying subjects. Even the most basic, and not regarding fighting. Yuuki, Ai, and myself, we really want to be there for them as much as we're able to. They deserve to simply be kids.

Sounds complicated. [It sounds annoying, more like it. People remembering but not knowing himself. There are plenty of things he can see as 'not too bad', but the memory thing sounds like one of the most frustrating.]

Then it's best if you stay near, even if they reject you at first. You know what they're going through most of all, don't you? [A little encouraging smile.] We can show them peaceful vampires, but only you can relate.

[For them, to know it's possible to survive and thrive, to live something of a life, is probably a deep desire.]

With the three of you, they might be all right. Mika's needs are a concern, but you've figured that out, too, haven't you? [Everyone seems to be right on top of it. It's adorable, his daughter and granddaughter and yeah, even the hunter, have all banded together to take care of a couple children in desperate need of their affections. Such good people, they are.]

["Complicated" is only the beginning. Frustrating, too; however it is what it is. He knows that going after the Wardens to give him back all of his memories wouldn't produce anything.]

That's very true. Honestly, it's also how I plan to open the conversation with. [Something which he's discussed with Yuuki already.] There are certainly similarities between Mika and myself, but I know there also are great differences.

Yeah. I have. The Blood Shack isn't the nicest place, but I know he'll be able to find what he needs there.

For the most part, yeah. I'd like to think so, at least. I know it won't be an easy conversation. From then on, though, we'd like to be completely honest with them.

[The don't deserve to be lied to.

. . .Please don't ask that, Haruka.]

Ah. Blood tablets are available here.

[A partial truth? Then again, it's so obvious by now that Zero is covered with the presence and scent of a pureblood— of Yuuki. Whoops.]

That place also has animal and synthetic blood.

You'll do fine. Children will surprise you in their resilience and ability to find the truth. They may be upset at first, but they'll appreciate your honesty so much more.

[He trusts that much.

Also, he will ask that.]

Blood tablets... [He drank from Juri or went without. There was none of that. Ah, but he might have to find an alternative... it's been a very long while since he's held back.]

I suppose it's good such a place exists. [Because he will be watching and he doesn't want to see any of the bloodsharing going on while he's around.]
