Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Wildcard

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[Honestly, Yuuki can't bring herself to do anything that might wake him as he rests. Their day before had been an emotional one, and if he's able to sleep some more she thinks he's probably earned it.

She does gather up a blanket to lay over atop him however. Brushing a bit of hair from his face, she smiles fondly.]

I'm sorry we can't tell you more about ourselves. [What they are... the unspoken fact that in the entire house right now, this child is the only human.] But I promise that you're safe.

[It isn't until he's up again later that she becomes very aware of how careful she might have to be with things.]

Sure. You can ask me a question.

[Sitting down in the family room, she lowers her cup of tea to give him her full attention.]

[Between the blanket and gentle brush of the hand, he shifts and groans. It's not too long after that, a whisper slips out:]

S...orry...

[He'll clutch the blanket as stray tears manage to slip from his eyes; he'll turn so the side of his face is pressed as far into the arm of the couch as possible, almost as though he can sense someone watching him... not that he really could.

Naturally, he won't remember any of that. When he approaches Yuuki, however, it's with a very serious question in mind:
] ...Do you...

[He looks to the side for a moment, determination slowly building itself onto his face.] Do you think Zero will agree to teach me how to hunt vampires?

[He wants to know what his chances are, so he can prepare himself for just how much annoying he'll have to do. He won't be giving up on asking, no matter what. He will get Zero as a teacher, somehow... There's a feeling he gets around the guy that tells him he can trust him -- like he'd only guide him down the best path... maybe...]

[Such a question... it's so to the point, and she can sense from him the pure desire to go after the things that have hurt him the most. It reminds her, sadly, of a very young Zero. At his question, she has to suppress a grimace.]

I'm a pacifist. [She says gently. Considering all he's gone through, she can't fault him for his feelings, but...] I love humans and vampires alike. [Glancing down at her glass, her fingers curl around her cup, and she continues quietly.] When I was little, a scary man attacked me. I was only five years old, so I couldn't do anything. But a kind man saved me. He was a vampire. He brought me to a retired hunter, and I was able to receive the help I needed.

[Lifting one of her hands, she gently touches her chest.] Because that person saved me, I'm alive today. And even after that point, he checked up on me often to make sure I was okay.

[Her brows knit, and she makes eye contact with him.]

I can teach you how to fight. And Zero would as well, I'm sure. But... [Her eyes soften] I don't want you to use it to think of killing and hunting vampires. Rather, I'd like if you could think of it as learning how to protect yourself and the people you care about.

[His mind can't comprehend the thought of someone actually loving all humans and vampires alike -- the only vampire he loves is Mika. No part of him could ever love the other vampires he'd known back home, and... well... he doesn't know any vampires in this world except his family. Zero still hasn't given him the identities of them, yet... Yuuki had come in around that time, so their conversation had kind of shifted at the time, and Yuu wasn't in the proper mindset to think to redirect it.

Being saved by a vampire... He actually can't picture a vampire caring enough to save a child -- all the ones he'd grown up knowing were sooner to kill one than help one. Actually, never mind... it is better to keep your source of blood alive, isn't it?

The bitter thought almost distracts him from hearing the rest of what Yuuki says.

Maybe if he weren't so messed up at this moment, he would consider her words. He would probably keep in mind that his best friend is what he's trying to hunt. He would consider that Yuuki is only trying to help him heal. There are a lot of woulds and could-haves in this moment, but the reality of it all?

Is that he clenches his teeth as a flash of pain enters his eyes. One hand tightens into a fist and he shakes his head.
] I should have... known you'd say something like that. It's not like you could ever understand, anyway. You weren't there... [He gives a bitter laugh and partially turns away from her.] Someone as gentle as you couldn't have gone through those kinds of things... So, there's no way you'll ever get it! Those things... took everything from me!!! Some of them even laughed while they did it! They held us hostage for years so they could use us as livestock, Yuuki! You expect me to just up and forgive all vampires?! All I had to keep me going for all those years was the desire to murder every single vampire I came across, once I became strong enough!

[He's softly pants, eyes glistening with the threat of tears, but... he bites them back. His expression turns firm and he glares at the floor as he speaks in a much quieter -- but much more determined -- voice.] You've been really nice... and if you're not comfortable with me being in your home after this, I get it. But... I'm never gonna stop wanting to hunt vampires. Sorry if that... makes you uncomfortable...

[He glances away, wondering where Mika is. Maybe they should... go...]

[He sounds so much like Zero. The hatred and pain is reflected in his very body language, the angry glint in his eye, and the sound of his voice. While it hasn't actually been all that long, in this moment, it feels like those days with Zero were a life time ago. The only thing that had kept him going was the revenge he had pitted deep within his young heart. He had had fueled a desire to live, no matter how misguided. It pains her to see it in Yuu, now. To know that someone else went through something so horrific, if not even more painful.

There's no doubt that the vampires who had destroyed this child's life deserve to die. Yuuki would do it herself, and hardly feel a moments remorse. Vampires who would hurt people. but especially children, are the lowest and most disguising beings imaginable. Just the idea of raising ones fangs to someone so innocent is enough to fuel anger within.

But right now, he can't understand. He can't see that there is so much more than just the vampires that exist within his hate filled and pained view of reality. The world is a lot bigger than both of them, and nothing is ever black and white.

Her cup is set aside in an instant, and she gently catches his arm.]

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. [Not in the least. What she isn't sorry for, however, is speaking the truth to him.] The people who did those terrible things deserve to be punished, and I understand where your pain and anger comes from. No one should ever live under such circumstances, and it makes my blood boil just imagining it.

[Her voice softens, gently-]

You are welcome here as long as you are comfortable with us. [The truth-- but considering the seeds of sorrow in his heart, will he still feel fine if and when he realizes who and what they really are?] I only want you to think, and to consider that the beings here may be different from what you are familiar with at home. But even more than that...

[Her voice is quiet, and soft, a whisper only for him because she doesn't want his companion to overhear-]

How scared and uncertain must your precious friend feel, to hear such words? [A reminder, even knowing that this child views Mika as different from the ones who have harmed him.] I imagine that child is terrified, unsure of his future, afraid of rejection, and at a loss. But even though he may be different now, I can tell that he has a genuinely kind soul. What he is now surely hasn't changed who he is. Or am I wrong...?

[Can he still speak so casually about murder, when his best friend is the thing he proclaims to hate most of all?]

[He looks ready to snatch away from her, at first. But the first two words are enough to have him hesitating. In spite of his earlier outburst, his body seems to relax a little more with each passing sentence. That is, at first, anyway. The second Mika's mentioned, his entire body goes rigid. With a shaky exhale, his eyes widen. In spite of the fact that he's whispering, his words are clearly full of a defensive tone:]

I'd never reject him! [His jawline tenses completely, eyes darting to the floor.] Don't talk like you understand... It's different with him. He's different from those bloodsuckers. What he is-... It's my fault. Sure, he might try to claim something different, but he became what he is... because of me. I left him there. I turned and ran out of that city without him. Besides, he's family. I could never turn my back on him a second time...

[But... the whole reason he's not yelling? The whole reason he is able to talk in that low tone...?] ...But you're right about one thing. I shouldn't say those things where Mika can hear me... I'm supposed to be helping him feel better, and yet... I didn't think...

[He falls quiet, still staring hard at the floor.]

Mm...

[A soft sound, neither unkind or chiding. Her intention isn't to make him feel bad by any means, or to disregard his feelings. It's only to make him pause and think. And the fact that he's whispering now, means that on some level he is aware of it.]

I've only just met Mika-kun, but I am sure that he would assure you that it's fine. While he might do that, however, I'm sure he doesn't feel fine at all himself.

[So it's best to be as kind as possible for his sake.]

For Mika-kun, and any other person in his same position, I'm sure such a transition is a scary one.
