Day 374 - Open Dreams
1: Face of the Enemy

[You're in a tent. The worn canvas does little to keep out the biting cold, and the dim light provided by a number of candles does even less to chase away the darkness creeping in from outside. A threadbare rug covers the dirt floor—a futile attempt to make a hovel feel like a home. Gaeta and a young woman are silently pulling on frayed clothes. The rumpled blanket on a nearby cot hints at what took place before your arrival.]

[The young woman finishes buttoning up her blouse and turns to Gaeta, a sad smile on her face.]
I'll try to get more of them out. Do you have another list?

Yes, I... [Gaeta shuffles through a stack of papers on a low desk to find a list of names. Last name first, alphabetized. He offers it to her with considerable hesitation.] This is it.

[She takes it, touching his fingers with hers and lingering a bit too long.] You can trust me, Felix. We'll get as many of your people out of detention as we can... together. [She leans in to kiss him. Everything about her is sweet and gentle.] Trust me.

I do. [He squeezes her hand and escorts her to the door.] I'll see you soon?

Soon. [She drops his hand and turns to exit the tent. Her smile twists into something darker as she walks into the cold night.]

[Gaeta runs a nervous hand through his hair and smooths out the wrinkles in a shirt that will never be unwrinkled. He notices you for the first time.]
Frak! [Clearly, you were not expected.] What are you doing in here? It's after curfew.

2: Collaborators

[The halls of the Galactica are rusted and dented and covered with the kind of dirt that accumulates with age and never scrubs off—a far cry from the sleek spaceships on television and in movies. The lights are low. The battlestar's low hum is interrupted only by the occasional footsteps on metal flooring...]

[...and, now, an angry male voice. It comes from the launch bay to your left.]
Turn around! On your knees!

[You follow the noises into the bay. Gaeta kneeling on the floor, hands ziptied behind his back, looking up at the six people circled around him with equal parts shock and resignation.]

Felix Gaeta, you've been tried and found guilty of crimes against humanity by a circle of your peers, as duly authorized by the President of the Colonies. [The woman sounds impatient. These words don't mean anything; everyone knows how this ends.] If you have any words to offer in your own defense, now is the time.

[One of the men in the circle—the only one who looks like he would rather be anywhere else, doing anything else—glances over at you. He's desperate. For what, you don't know. An ally? Someone to help him put an end to this?]

[What do you do?]

[Gaeta doesn't have the energy to deal with Damon's prodding and weird references. Sorry for not being fun (not really).]

They're machines that wiped out most of the human population, and some of them--the ones in charge--look like humans. We found a habitable planet to colonize. The cylons found us and took over a few months after we arrived... not that our esteemed president did much to stop them. [There. The highly-abridged version.]

[Gaeta's whole spiel was a lot darker than Damon had expected, briefly throwing him for a loop. But whenever Damon doesn't know how to react, he defaults to snark.]

So nothing like Daft Punk. Duly noted. Anyway, you realize none of this actually matters because this is a dream, right?

It matters to me. [Not that he expects Damon to care about the issues he and his subconscious are attempting to work through.] And are you sure it doesn't matter? The prison's a virtual reality. This is as real as that.

Exactly. A virtual reality. So they can't hurt me. They probably can't even really hurt you. You've got nothing to be afraid of. [Believe it or not, this is Damon being totally supportive of your issues.]

Still, watching you get your head blown off your shoulders by cylons isn't going to do a lot for my peace of mind. Humor me and stay here. [He points to a rickety stool.] Sit.

Awwwwww, Gaeta, I didn't know you cared. [Damon obligingly perches on the edge of the stool.] Is this the point where we braid friendship bracelets? Or maybe each other's hair. You'd have to get extensions, though.

I don't, and thanks for taking this seriously. [Die in a fire, Damon. Except don't. Gaeta would feel guilty if you did.] I just want this to end differently than it usually does.

Well of course it's going to end differently. I'm here. It's already different.

You've only changed the middle. [He returns to the tent flap to look outside.] I need to go check something. Don't move. Don't even think about moving.

[And just like that, Damon uses his vampire speed to appear behind Gaeta almost instantaneously.]

Whatcha looking for?

[He's nosy and bored.]

Gods, Damon. [You don't just appear behind someone who's been dodging death in various forms for almost two years, geez.] What part of "don't move" didn't make sense to you?

The part where you expected me to listen to you. [He smiles charmingly.] What are you looking for?

[Charm doesn't work right now and Damon gets a glare for his trouble. He'll have to try again when they're not in a dream version of occupied New Caprica.] I need to find my Eight. [That probably doesn't make sense, but Gaeta ducks out of the tent without waiting to see if Damon follows (conversationally or literally).]

[It's not as dark outside as it initially seemed; bright spotlights—definitely evocative of a prison—light the settlement's perimeter. Tall, metallic cylon centurions patrol the narrow streets, near-silent in spite of their bulk. Their glinting chrome armor looks distinctly out of place in the dirt of the struggling city. The machines disregard Gaeta entirely.]

[He'll follow literally, because he has nothing better to do.]

No wonder she walked out on you. The woman's at least a nine. And point of note, but it's generally considered gauche to refer to a woman solely by her hotness ranking.

I wasn't referring to— [what are you even talking about] That's what she is, it's her model number. Stop following me.

[Spoiler alert: He's not going to stop.]

By model number do you mean like a computer, or like a super model?

[info]didwhaticould
2016-06-02 08:47 pm UTC (link)
She's not a computer. [He's awfully defensive about that for a guy who doesn't like cylons.]

[As much as he would like to continue telling Damon to go away, the arrival of another Eight--identical to the one in Gaeta's tent but for her outfit and hard expression--discourages Gaeta from saying anything else. The Eight glares at Damon.]

Identify yourself. [Clipped. No-nonsense.]

Well hello there. [Turning on the charm — well, smarm.] The name's Damon. What's yours?

[This would be a good time for Gaeta to say something, but honestly, Damon has already screwed himself over too thoroughly for any kind of intervention. So much for this dream not ending horribly.]

[The Eight is, of course, unimpressed with him.]
I'm authorized to shoot humans on sight after curfew. Give me a reason to not put another hole in your head.

[Damon turns to Gaeta.] This is your girlfriend? [beat] Actually, I'm not surprised. You strike me as a glutton for punishment.

As for a reason not to shoot me ... [Turning back to the Eight] Why don't we start with: It won't do you any good?

[He grins and slide into his vamp face.]

She's not— [You know what? Never mind. There are other things going on like Damon having vampire face.

It's hard to say what a real Eight would do in the face of a vampire. Since this is Gaeta's head, she looks just as surprised as he does.

And then she moves to shoot him in the face. How fast is a vampire? Cylons are pretty darn fast.]

[info]thatasshole

[Not quite fast enough to dodge a speeding bullet, but that doesn't matter. While it hits him square in the right eye socket, he remains standing. Barely even lets out a sound of pain.]

That was pretty rude. This is going to be gross.

[He reaches into his eye socket, wincing more at the disgusting squishing noise than the pain (he's used to pain), and pulls out the bullet. His eye immediately begins healing.]

There. Now you were saying?

[info]didwhaticould

[There's an awkward silence where everyone is too floored to do much of anything. The Eight recovers enough to level her gun at Damon, apparently undeterred by the fact that bullets aren't going to kill him.]

What are you?

[Meanwhile, Gaeta is stepping away. Maybe Damon can't be killed with bullets, but he can and being shot by an Eight is one of his least favorite ways to die in dreams.]

[info]thatasshole

[Humans — and Cylons, evidently — are so stupid. Why keep aiming a gun at someone it won't hurt? But whatever.]

More or less indestructible. What about you?

[In a flash, he uses his vampire speed to race towards her, intending to sink his teeth into her throat. Healing a wound like that takes a lot out of a vampire and, well, she pretty much deserves it after shooting him.]

[info]didwhaticould

[Guns are like security blankets: There's an overwhelming tendency to hide behind them even if they won't actually fend off monsters.

The Eight isn't expecting that. The gun falls from her hands and she claws at him in futile desperation.

Unfortunately, Damon has managed to attract the attention of every cylon in the vicinity and they're converging on his position. More unfortunately, Gaeta didn't sneak away fast enough to avoid being corralled back to Damon and he can't seem to decide if he should panic, shove Damon off of the Eight, or be extremely unhappy in the vampire's direction. His attempt at doing all three simultaneously results in him punching Damon's shoulder as hard as he can.]

What did you do! [No, it's not a question.]
