[#1 - The Way It Never Was]

[The Assassins contacted Rebecca after she'd gotten into coding after a bad break of her leg, leading to events that would have her separating from her then-boyfriend and taking to a lifestyle that never stopped moving. One that was never safe. But what happens if you turn back the clock, mess with the edges of things and put a new spin on it? Prying from the recesses of her mind the questions of regret, loneliness and curiosity to what would've happened if she just had stayed where she was.

The apartment's a downtown two bedroom, open concept for the most part and in an artsier edge of town. Lots of brick and scattered equipment over the floor as one of those bedrooms turned into a half-gym half office for Rebecca. Rebecca who is coming in the door now, brown paper bag in one hand and keys dropped to the table as she heads into the kitchen.]

Babe? [That's you.] I'm back. Did the shelter call? I'm waiting to hear back about our baby.

[#2 - The Way It Very Well May End]
[It's a crowded space, maybe something like a shopping mall or a densely populated public event. The edges are fuzzy and the people around mill by, the sense of hiding in plain sight being at the forefront of your mind. No doubt the eyes are watching, looking through that crowd for you. But Rebecca's by your side, rocking a beanie and keeping her head tilted down but her eyes always moving. If you start to lag behind she'll subtly give your sleeve a tug.] Hey, c'mon. We're almost outta here.

You remember the plan, right? Stay calm, stay cool... We've got this cov- shit! Run! [Know what this sound is? It's gunfire, screaming and the swell of pandemonium as someone's very much trying to kill you.]

[ Isn't this familiar? The adrenaline rush but also doing this with her. He gives her a tense nod — yeah, he's got it — and that's right around the time when all hell breaks loose. He can run, he's not great at it but he can run and he tries to keep an eye on her as he does, but the crowd is difficult to navigate with the chaos that's happening. ]

Rebecca!

[There are a thousand sounds a minute; dropped bags, shrieks and screams and the distinct ringing cry of a child in the crowd but there's no time to stop, look around or think. There's only time to move. But she's not about to ditch Reid, they're in this together, so she flashes him a small quirked smile despite the circumstances.] We go left, for the parking lot alright? Not the subway.

[Which there are so many signs for. Where's the other exit?]

Okay!

[ No sense in wasting words just to show that he heard her. Heart pounding in his throat he tries to survey the lay of the land between pushing, shoving, elbowing and squeezing his way through the crowd. There's a nagging feeling that he should help, he's law enforcement but all he can really focus on is getting out of here with Rebecca, safe and unharmed. Maybe then he can figure out how the hell they got here. ]

[She has this knot twisting in her stomach born of anxiety the longer it takes, pushing against a tide of people and fighting toward an exit she knows is near by. It's close, down a hallway that keeps stretching until the cacophony of gunfire returns behind them. More screams are heard and Rebecca doesn't look back, it's like she can smell blood in the air and see the smoking guns.

Gasping, she throws herself against a door to wrench it open for them and leave the crowds behind, splitting them into a subway platform beyond turnstiles. There are no attendants, no other people, the distant sounds of chaos perhaps scaring them away. But Rebecca feels like she can breathe again, like they have some time. She walks toward the turnstiles, easily climbing over them.]
Abstergo's never really that forward in public. They'll probably be blaming us for anyone who got caught up in the middle.

[Grim, she dusts off her sleeve. She knows better, but still:] I hope nobody got hurt.

[ Subway, not parking lot, but even though he has a bad feeling about going in this direction he doesn't question it, just follows along, jumps the turnstile, keeps close pace behind her. ]

Abstergo. [ He echoes, wracks his brain to understand what's happening here. ] Not much we can do about that from here.

Rebecca... what's going on?

Abstergo-- [She says it like she's trying to remind him, remind him of what Abstergo's capable and done to them before but she realizes after a cloudy second that maybe he doesn't know. Why would he know? He's Reid. He'd only know what she told him and she's sure that's far more sparse than it could've been. She gets a wave of impatience because she doesn't have time for this but.]

They are always watching for Assassins, for me, wherever I go. [Her voice is dropped to a whisper as she nods him over, heading toward the empty platform but staying close to the walls. Her body language is cautious, wary like an animal ready to spook.] I shouldn't have - I'm sorry you're caught up in it now. We can probably get you out safe, but that's just it. We have to get to a safehouse first.

[ He doesn't need to know more than that. They can get into the details later, once they're out of this. Following along, he brushes his hand over his hip again, reaching for a revolver that really isn't there. Still. Damn it. He wishes he at least had a flak jacket or something but no, nothing. ]

Don't worry about it — it's not your fault. [ Is it? ] Let's just get out of here.

[It's a small relief when a subtle gust of wind blows along the tunnels, signalling the next train due to head in in only a few moments time. It helps put her mind at ease away from the tinkering noises that sound too much like someone ready to step out at them. Just trash blowing around, rats in the walls. Nothing fearsome to be worried about, right? Her heart just won't calm.]

Yeah - on the train and out of here. [There's a wiggling, bothersome thought that this isn't how they came - she feels like she should be driving instead but there's no car. No parking lot. She nods toward the edge of the platform, the lights of the incoming subway car sheening over it. The train's automatic, slowing after it rumbles in and the doors parting for them. She shepherds him forward only to hear noise behind them.] Hurry! Get on!

[ He follows along, feeling especially helpless in this situation. He doesn't know what's going on and he can't do much to help but follow close behind, scrambling onto the train and casting a brief glance behind him. Shit. ]

Stay low. [ Just in case. He has a really bad feeling about this. Please train get a move on. ]

[That noise turns to shouts, the sound of gunfire again and metal hitting metal just as she shoves Reid forward into the train and barely slides forward herself in time for the doors to shut behind her. The ding of them still ringing in her ears, she can't really find it in her to let out the breath she's holding and relax; even though the train is moving out of the station she feels tense. Too tense.]

It's - We made it. [She doesn't hurt but she knows something's wrong. Looking down, she puts her hand over her side just above her hip and watches red seep through her fingers like water. Bright ruby red water. "Shit", she murmurs exasperatedly under her breath. This is just great.]

[ For a moment, it seems like everything is okay. They got away, they can catch their breath, they can figure out what to do next — and then.

For a beat, time stands still, cold dread mixing with the equally cold professionalism that forces him into action rather than terror. Grabbing her by the arm, Reid tugs her towards a seat. ]

Here- lay down. We have to apply pressure to the wound. [ And maybe he can get a better look at where she's hit. ]

[The blood's not like anything she's seen before, like her brain's trying to figure out how it should feel because as red rushes through her fingers it doesn't start off hurting. It feels cool, surreal and dizzyingly bad but it's not until she stumbles toward the subway bench seating that her body catches up with her brain.

Then it hurts. It makes her groan and grit her teeth, crumpling down to lay over the three connected seats. Not quite the right pain but it's pain nonetheless, a twisting cramping feeling that bores right through her.]
Fuck. I should've - seen this coming. I'm sorry, Reid.

It's okay — you're going to be okay.

[ Jaw set, his attention all pooled into pinpoint concentration, numb fingers working deftly at uncovering the wound and then quickly covering it again, pressing against it hard to stop the bleeding but this isn't a slit wrist and he doesn't have anyone around to call for help. No medics on this train. ]

Just stay with me, Rebecca... keep talking, you're going to be just fine.

[ She's busy in the kitchen, cooking and writing down recipes that she can bring into work later. Most of all she's happy, deliriously so, settled into this beautiful apartment with this beautiful girl with a beautiful dog on the way. Does life get better than this? No. Never. ]

Hey, welcome home! [ She beams, wiping her hands on a tea towel as she comes out to meet Rebecca halfway. ] Not yet... I've been in all day, I don't think I would've missed it.

[Rebecca sets down the paper bag out of one arm, full of all the things she remembered to pick up for her lovely girlfriend's cooking adventures and then a little few things for herself. She then drops her headphones off her hears to hang around her shoulders for the kiss she dips forward to plant on Chuck's lips.] Cool.

If they don't call by three I'll give them a shout, yeah? Or will they know I'm the needy mom if I do?

Oh, don't worry. I'll make a point of that for sure... [One smooch turns to a small nip and suck, tenderly nuzzling Chuck's precious neck afterward.]

But you'd look good in anything, it's true. [...] Or out of it, for that matter.
