Day 370 - Open Audio
[You know what's a terrible idea? Going outside when outside is a dark place full of raptors and wasps and inexplicable feelings of terror. Gaeta thought that he could be useful—he's used to keeping cool in a crisis, and sometimes a level head is just as much help as someone who can handle a weapon—but all he managed to do is get stung by a wasp.

Just his luck.]

Giant bees? Completely irrational fear? Those weren't in the brochure. Thank you, wardens. [This is the voice of a man who is trying not to sound terrified and failing miserably.] Don't go outside. I know it's tempting with the dark and the warnings from the Defense Force, but be smart. Don't try to be a frakking hero.

[This has been a PSA.]

...Someone's still alive out there, right? [He doesn't sound sure.] It's been a couple hours since I heard a broadcast.

It's not hard, not when you read 20 000 words per minute. [ Did he mention that he's a genius? He is. ]

Wow. [Just... wow. Some things warrant monosyllabic responses, okay?] You know, there was a time when I thought I was pretty intelligent. You're not the first person who's forced me to rethink that.

If it helps, I think the dome has an above average concentration of geniuses. I'm definitely not the worst one around.

[Actually, that does not help.] I'm not sure I'd want to run into someone who's more of a genius than you.

Chances are you already have. [ Considering the concentration of tech geniuses. ] That doesn't make you less of a person, you know.

Not less of a person, no. [Just less worthwhile when your only useful quality has been above-average intelligence.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

it took me three attempts not to write butt

[ You mean exactly how he feels almost every day of his life, at least at some point? Funny, that. ] But..? It sounds like you have a but coming.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

that would have changed this conversation dramatically

[You'd think being smart would come with some amount of security and self-esteem, right?] How much of your identity is connected to your intellect, Reid?

Oh, all of it, without a doubt. I'm nothing without it. [ Self-deprecative, with a chuckle, but that doesn't make it any less true. He knows himself well enough to know that his self esteem is entirely connected to achievements in the intellectual field. ]

There you go. [Reid gets it. Good man.] I can't be an officer or an official here, so everything's riding on being intelligent enough to mean something.

You're in the same situation as a lot of people here, then. I can't exactly solve serial killer cases, even if I wanted to and reciting Chaucer from memory is only impressive for so long.

So what do you do to stay sane? [Besides hide from raptors in libraries. Not that this isn't entertaining.]

[ It's nice that you think he's sane. He doubts it. ] I read. Play chess, or piano. Attend social gatherings, when I feel like it.

Most of the time I just try to find a way out of here.

[Relatively sane? How about that?]

How's looking for a way out going for you? I've been told that there aren't a lot of promising leads.

[ Better. ]

I have some ideas. The difficult thing is testing them. How do you break a simulation from the inside without risk of causing physical or mental damage to yourself?

[ Chances are he'll do just that eventually, out of frustration if nothing else. ]

You don't, I suppose. Trying sounds like a good way to drive yourself insane.

If you need help... I doubt I'm as educated as you are, but I know a thing or two about applied physics and I don't particularly value my sanity.

We could always use more people. [ With little care for their personal safety. ] I'll introduce you to the team someday when this is over.

You have a team for this? [Sure there must be plenty of people who want to get out, but how many of those people have the right backgrounds and a general disregard for their well being?] I'd like that. Thank you.

An unofficial one, but I'd like to think that counts. [ They don't even have a club house. ]

We haven't done any substantial experiments yet. The tech is pretty, uh. Advanced. Rebecca's the one in charge of that.

I look forward to underwhelming her with my contributions.
