Day 370 - Open Audio
[You know what's a terrible idea? Going outside when outside is a dark place full of raptors and wasps and inexplicable feelings of terror. Gaeta thought that he could be useful—he's used to keeping cool in a crisis, and sometimes a level head is just as much help as someone who can handle a weapon—but all he managed to do is get stung by a wasp.

Just his luck.]

Giant bees? Completely irrational fear? Those weren't in the brochure. Thank you, wardens. [This is the voice of a man who is trying not to sound terrified and failing miserably.] Don't go outside. I know it's tempting with the dark and the warnings from the Defense Force, but be smart. Don't try to be a frakking hero.

[This has been a PSA.]

...Someone's still alive out there, right? [He doesn't sound sure.] It's been a couple hours since I heard a broadcast.

Then hiding in the dark and waiting for something to try to kill you must be old hat for you. [Dryly. That's not something that a person gets used to, even when it's a work hazard.] I hope you're paid well.

Not well enough. [ The getting shot at isn't really the tough part but let's not discuss that right now. ] What do you do?

[What, Reid doesn't want to get into his darkest fears with a relative stranger?] It depends on the day. I suppose I'm a tactical officer right now.

[ Not really ever and absolutely not now. Please don't kill him. ] Tactical officer in...?

[There are many things that could feasibly kill Reid. Gaeta is not one of them.] In the CIC on a battlestar. The only battlestar, which makes me humanity's foremost tactician. [There's too much self-deprecation for that to be bragging.]

[ Don't be so sure about that. He's good at taking off his flak vest and getting blown up. ]

So... in space? [ Did he find another sci fi person how cool is this. ]

[That was not an invitation to try!]

Yes, in space. [Where else would you keep your battlestar?] Your people are planet-bound? I've been told that interstellar travel isn't that common around here.

More or less... we've put a man on the moon and we've sent out some probes, but that's about it. There's no real space travel yet, especially not for the every day man.

Do you know Leia? Leia Organa... or Han Solo?

Space travel isn't as amazing as you'd think. Enjoy your planet; it's the only home you'll ever have.

I've never met them. [Not everyone from space knows everyone else, Reid.] I know a Ton here who's spent time off-planet.

[ Hey, that's why he's asking and not assuming. Maybe space people do flock together or maybe he can do some introducing. ]

Oh, everyone knows Ton. [ Hard to miss, really. ] They're from the same world, the three of them.

Everyone? He did seem unusually friendly. [He didn't mind it too much when Gaeta stared at his cylon eye in abject horror. If that's not friendliness, then what is?] I don't know where they're from, but it's not my universe.

No, I assumed that much... but I could introduce you, if you want to meet more people who knows what it's like to spend a lot of time in space.

[ See? He's trying to be helpful, not assuming that all space people know each other. ]

Oh. I'd appreciate that. [Reid is incredibly nice. It feels like there should be a catch.] Thank you for letting me hide with you. I appreciate that, too.

[ No catch, unless you see his friendship as a terrible thing which, truth be told, many people have. ]

Of course. We have to look out for each other when things like this happens.

[Any friendship that doesn't lead to the betrayal of humanity is a good friendship.]

You don't have to. That's why it matters.

There's not much room for altruism when the entire human population is on the brink of running out of food and water.

"No" would've been enough, right?

It's... a significant change. I can't complain. [There's an implication there that he would like to.]

[ Yeah, he notices that choice of words. ]

Having free access to food and shelter doesn't mean the transition has to be easy or even welcome. Suddenly having anything you need can be just as much of a trauma as not having it.

I don't see how having everything I could want handed to me could qualify as traumatic.

Did you know that soldiers who've spent time as prisoners of war sometimes can't sleep in a bed for weeks after they return home?

[ So, y'know. It's a thing. It's definitely a thing. ]
