Day 367 - video
[He doesn't come from a world with a lot of modern technology but he's sure visited enough to get used to it. That's why when trying to figure out the communication device, Kurogane figures it out fairly quickly.]

Another new world, huh? [Have one unsurprised new inmate, MarinaNova.] Never thought there'd be one that seems to only be a prison.

Oi, listen up. I'm looking for a couple of people. One goes by the name of Fai - tall, blond, probably has an idiotic grin on his face. Another is the kid who calls himself Syaoran - brown hair, serious but helpful. Then there's Mokona - a weird creature who looks like a meatbun with rabbit ears and talks.

[Kurogane doesn't ask about Sakura, he knows where she is... well, one of her anyway.]

I also wouldn't complain if anyone had any information about this world that they were willing to share.

[Now that is a surprise. Fai hasn't needed an eyepatch for quite a while but that's not the only thing that catches him off-guard. It's the use of his full name. That is more telling than anything else.]

If I hadn't gotten to it first, you would have done it.

[Just a clear fact of the matter.]

Hm, maybe they didn't get pulled here.

[Fai isn't the only one who doesn't remember leaving the world he was currently on. Mokona couldn't even leave where they had been.]

Where are you?

[It is, isn't it? But it won't last forever, even if Fai is still angry at him for doing what he did and grateful and confused and so many more things, but mostly angry. Because he gave up so much, too much, for someone who doesn't deserve it.]

You know me so well. [Too well, but who cares about the details.]

Looks like it. If their names aren't on the list of inmates on this device, they probably aren't here. [He checks as he speaks, surprised by how easily he can use the communicator. Before their journey such a thing would have been unthinkable. When the list doesn't contain their names, the last bit of hope notably vanishes from his face. Kurogane will be able to get it without him saying anything, so he doesn't.]

Do you ... remember getting pulled here? [There is another question that Fai wants to ask instead (What is the last thing you remember?) but he doesn't. Mostly because he doesn't want to be asked the same thing.]

Ah, Sector 2. I think I smell bread and ... [His eye seems to scan the surroundings.] I think sell alcohol at another place here. [Which he only mentions because he knows the ninja is bound to be interested in that.] But let's save that for later, shall we?

I think I will go to Sector 0 and ask for information at the kiosk they mentioned in the transmission, first. Maybe you can cover a few other places and we meet up somewhere later? [A smile appears on his face again, that only serves to put more distance between them than any sectors could.]

[The question of the day is: What is Fai mad about exactly? Because the whole period in between the loss of his eye (and Kurogane's decision to force him to stay alive) up to the point of Fai giving up the magic in his other eye was one big moment of Fai being angry at him. As for what he gave up for someone else... well, that was his choice.

Even if he can't pinpoint the precise moment Fai comes from, one thing is clear.]
Probably better than you realize.

[It's said gentler and kinder than Fai might remember.

Kurogane makes a soft humming sound at that information.]
Figures. Looks like it's you and me for the time being.

[Of course he gets it. Though he doesn't comment on it. They have more important things to discuss and even if they did - it would not be over these things.]

No. One minute I was standing next to you and the next I'm here. [He's vague on the details for a reason. It's very obvious that Kurogane is from further in the future and he isn't sure what he should and shouldn't say.

Oh, alcohol. Fai might just... let him drink all he wants while the mage is possibly still angry with him. But he resists for now.]

I'll meet you at the kiosk. [Yeah, no. Kurogane is already heading there now and don't think you're getting out of this.]

[That is for Fai to know (if even he really understands it) and for daddy to find out.

Something like realization shines in Fai's eye as Kurogane says those words, a hint that maybe, maybe they are not from the same time period after all. However that is possible. Maybe it's like Yama again, only this time ... no, it doesn't really make sense at all.

A small, real smile plays around Fai's lips. Kurogane saying something like that should make him uneasy, make him want to run, but it's not all there is.]

Just like the good old days, hm? [Not that Yama had been that long ago, at least not for him, but the expression seems fitting.] Only this time we have something to translate for us. [Which is both good and bad, at the same time. It makes things easier, yes, but it also makes it a lot harder to hide things from the other man.

He pauses, noticing that Kurogane keeps it vague on purpose. But there is no need for that. Not when Fai has already pretty much figured out why he does it.]
I was speaking to the witch in Nihon. But you already guessed something like that, haven't you?

[A playful grin appears on his face, as he lets the tension fall away for a moment.] Want to race me there? [Good thing Fai had started walking before telling Kurogane about his destination. Otherwise he would never make it there sooner than him.]

[It won't take him long to find out either.

All of this really doesn't make much sense but that's pretty much been the story since forever. Their lives were such complicated messes that it really shouldn't be a surprise that this is just another one of them.

That smile is something he notices. There's a real one that he wouldn't have seen had Fai still be angry at him. Which is definitely very telling of when the mage was from.]

At least we know we could communicate even without these devices. [Playing charades for six months made them excellent at figuring out what the other wanted. Though Kurogane has had even more time to get to know the mage.]

I thought it was something like that, yeah. It's been a while since I was in Nihon. A lot of things happened. [Crazy, unbelievable things.]

Hmph, you're probably already halfway there. There's no point in racing when I'm sure you'll get there first. [Yeah, he recognizes that playful grin.] I'll just meet you there.

[Kurogane is extremely calm about all of this - doesn't seem as easily riled as he had been at the start of their journey.]

[Oh, he is angry. A part of him maybe always will be, a part of him always won't understand why he didn't just leave him behind. Let him die in Tokyo ... He should have but he didn't and they still haven't talked about it. Maybe they should. If only it was that simple ...]

We do, yes. [It calms him just as much as he didn't like it back then. There were funny moments, sure, but he had come to depend on Kurogane then and from then on he had never really stopped.]

Are the children alright? [It's all he has to know, really. Kurogane not asking about Sakura-chan hadn't escaped the mage's attention. Just which children he doesn't specify, instead meaning all of them. His heart feels like someone squeezes it, as he waits for the answer.]

You are much too smart for me, Kuro-sama. [The nickname slips out before Fai notices, such a strong habit that isn't easily broken after all.]

[And he will take that anger. No matter what form it may come in. All because Kurogane doesn't regret it. He doesn't regret forcing the mage to live or giving up his left arm despite what may have happened after. They were consequences he could accept.

What they have now is real. Even if Fai isn't quite there yet.]

The princess was back home, the kid is fine and the other two... we're still looking for them. [Those two kids they had been traveling with at the beginning - the one who ripped Fai's eye out and ate it, the princess who slept and couldn't remember.]

You just think that now. [These days Fai knows him about as well as the ninja knew Fai. He picks up on small things that Kurogane typically excels at hiding and ensures that the ninja is taken care of.]

[Real, huh? For Fai it hasn't sunk in yet, that his wish for someone to come and take him away has come true. He doesn't regret meeting Kurogane and the children, not when the time he has spent with them was something he cherished. But it feels selfish and wrong for the other man to sacrifice so much for him, when he has nothing to offer, nothing to make up for all that.

He wonders if that will change, if something between them will change, but he can't ask. He shouldn't.]

Good. That sounds good.

[Better than anything he might have feared. There is hope yet, otherwise Kurogane wouldn't put it like that.]

You ... didn't return to Nihon?

[It was Kurogane's wish to return home, as soon as possible, so it's a valid question. If Sakura-chan is not with them anymore that means their original journey has come to an end, but Kurogane didn't leave. Fai doesn't have a home to return to, there is nowhere left for him to go except on, but for the ninja it's different.]

I have for a long time ... [It's nothing more than a whisper, barely audible if at all. Fai isn't sure why he says it, but he does. Maybe it's the physical distance between them that makes it so much easier to talk, maybe it's this place, maybe he's just confused, but whatever it is, it makes him more honest than he's been in a long time.]

[Things have changed so much since he first left Nihon. All he could think about was getting back. Then when he did get back, Kurogane felt as though he couldn't stay. Not yet. Even after Fei Wang Reed was dead, Kurogane couldn't go home.

And maybe... he'd grown fond of his traveling companions. Maybe he really did think of them as a family. That was something he hadn't had in a long time.]

Yeah, things are better. [Not great but better.] We'll find them.

[Ah yeah, that.]

I have things to do, people to find. Can't go back with all of that left unsettled.

[He doesn't sound upset by that. Not like he would have at the start of their journey when going home was all that he wanted. The people Kurogane had been traveling with had become important to him. They were people he cared about and he couldn't abandon people he cared about.]

Give it more time. [Then Fai will know him about as well and Kuro knows Fai. He'll be able to translate his words and actions to other people, can figure out when his left arm is bothering him even though he doesn't show it. Though Fai could already figure some things out such as the time he got hurt and hid it from the children after the race.]

I know we will, Kuro-daddy. [The smile he wears as he nods is genuine. He doesn't know any of the specifics, doesn't know what happened since he isn't a dreamseer. But he has faith and he knows that neither of them will give up, not until everyone is safe and happy.

A lot has changed, Fai notices as much. The fact that Kurogane has grown like this, has seemingly lost even more of his edges, fills Fai with a weird kind of pride, one that he pushes to the back of his mind. It's not like it's his achievement. No, it isn't.

He shakes his head, as if to tell Kurogane not to worry about him. If they have anything here it will be time, it seems. Time and so much too talk about but ... He is so kind. Why is he so kind? And why does it hurt so much?

But he (of course) hides those feelings behind a teasing grin, one of his annoying fake whistles accompanying it.]
Hyuu~ Looks like you are getting old, Kuro-pai. [By which he means that he arrived at the kiosk.] I think I'll go ahead and ask some questions, while I wait. Anything you want me to ask them?

[They've both grown fond of the kids - all of them - despite their efforts to not get close. No matter that they might have started off this journey as people thrown together, they've become family at this point. Even Kurogane doesn't try to dispute the nickname of being "daddy" any longer. And family doesn't give up on family.

But Fai is part of the reason he's changed. It may not be just him but there's no denying that Fai is an individual who's changed him. Kurogane knows that he made a change in the magician in return.

Telling him not to worry is like telling him not to be a ninja. It just can't happen. He cares about Fai so of course that means worrying about him. That's what family does.

Kurogane sees through that teasing grin but doesn't comment on it even if an eyebrow raises slightly. He'll have to get used to that again. Seeing those smiles and to all of the emotions hidden behind it.

Sorry Fai, but he doesn't ruffle easily these days.]
Not nearly as old as you are, mage.

[There is a thinking pause that follows Fai's question.] Anything I want to ask they probably won't answer.

[Complicated questions that no warden would want a prisoner to know the answer to.]

I'll see you in a few minutes.
