Day 363; closed to Soushi
[The knot in Kazuki's gut since arriving, which had hardly been an hour ago, continued to sit heavy. There is absolutely nothing right or acceptable about this situation, and his mind continuously falls back to the same questions.

—Although, most especially, what in the world even is all of this really, and how is it possible? He's been through some unique experiences in his life, but this is beyond all of it. Which says a great deal.

Surroundings aside, Kazuki's thoughts are even more stuck on two things in particular: what threats may this place be under which he isn't aware of yet, and two, Soushi's well-being. The young boy was perfectly taken care of and cared for by plenty of others, but he can't help the concern, and the want and need to return to Watatsumi Island as quick as possible.

At some point Kazuki finds himself upon the beach. Something far more familiar, and able to ease him, however only by a small amount. Regardless, he forces himself to slow down and take a breather; he removes his shoes and lets his toes curl into the warm sand. His eyes close with the intention to try not to look to the sky warily. It's been a fair enough time since there had last been a full blown Festum attack - home having actually become somewhat peaceful in those two years, though no one would ever dare let their guard down completely - but that was the thing. At home it's like that. Who's to say for this Marina Nova place?

When he opens his eyes again, all of those things fly out of his mind when he notices someone swimming in towards the shore. The bright orange jumpsuit is what sticks out the most, answering one question immediately. Which means they must have woken up in the water.

It's when they get to their feet and travel the rest of the way, becoming just close enough by the moment to be clear enough to make out more detail (although it's the soaking wet and very long hair that cements it in), does Kazuki's heart stop.

(Is it really. . .?)

Before he can think of doing otherwise, he's making his way towards him, almost stumbling over his own two feet at first. He takes Soushi's face between both hands, disbelieving gaze flickering between the other's, before wrapping his freind into his arms in a close embrace without even saying a word.

It's been two years, but feels like far, far longer than the first time. Tears welling up in his eyes, Kazuki closes them before any can fall.

Maybe these circumstances aren't actually happening, after all. He's had this sort of dream before.. . . . But either way.]

[It was a rather wet awakening and now he was entirely soaked from his jumpsuit to his hair. There's a weight upon his ankle that he can't inspect due to the fact that it's below the surface of the water and Soushi doesn't entirely feel like drowning to inspect it. As he makes his way towards the shore, he listens to the voice speaking through the earpiece and it seems quite unbelievable. Or it would be were it not for the fact that he's somewhere completely different from where he'd been, in clothes he'd never worn before, with a device that he never had and the sky was no longer the sky but what appeared to be water.

All he could do was accept his situation until he could properly investigate it.

The sound of splashing water draws his attention away from the shore but before Soushi has the chance to process what his eyes are seeing, Kazuki is right there. His face is held with both hands which should not be possible considering the state his friend had last been in according to Soushi's memories.

It isn't all that surprising that Kazuki was able to reach him before he reached the shore - his friend had always been the better when it came to such activities. Though he hardly expected to see the other moving about the next time they saw each other so all Soushi can do is blink several times.

The hands upon his face are very real and warm.]

Kazuki? [There is no hiding the evident shock showing in his expression.]

[All that Kazuki can very initially do is draw Soushi even further into his arms, as if that's even possible in the first place. He doesn't want to let go. Not quite this second. The other is equally just as warm and real.

For as worrisome as it is to be here, he does hope the latter is true.

Another few moments and he loosens his hold, although he still remains close.
]

. . .Are you really here?

[Even now touch is not one thing that Soushi is very good at. And yet he allows this. Allows Kazuki to draw them closer because the last time he saw his friend, he had suffered due to assimilation. A fact of life that they had both accepted upon stepping into the Fafners months ago. It was the way they'd chosen to bring peace.

Maybe they both need this. Soushi hadn't been in a bad state but if Kazuki had woken up while they were away - he may not know that.

So he doesn't say anything about it even when the other doesn't grip him so tightly.]

I'm really here.

[Something that of course Kazuki knows of. So after Soushi's reply, and an exhale to compose himself again, he lets up and steps back, wiping his eyes with the back of a hand.

His chest still feels tight, though. Is it really that odd for him to be so taken aback? He faintly smiles, a mix of something fond and bittersweet.]

It's been a long while, Soushi.

[He never would have imaged he'd truly see his best friend again, like this and not within a dream (unless this still is one). It's true that the child back home may regain the memories of his previous self, but that doesn't mean they'll be the same person.]

[There's a moment where he opens his mouth to dispute the claim but closes it quickly enough. If anyone knows about time, it would be Kazuki. After all, he waited two and a half years for Soushi to return after being assimilated.

With space between them now, he takes the opportunity to pull his hair over his shoulder and wring out some of the sea water. Idly he wonders how long it will take for him to locate a shower in order to clean it because slightly stiff hair is not comfortable.]

How long?

[It hasn't been long for him at all but time could have little meaning in a place like this one.]

[He just watches Soushi for a few moments, trying to read whatever else that may be behind his words. For as well as they've been able to mutually understand one another, there still are of course times where he can't especially read him.

There's definitely a time discrepancy, but it may have been perceived in separate ways. It's because of this that he doesn't take Soushi's question as out of place.]

Around two or so years.

[Two years. Not quite as long as the last time he disappeared but still a long time in the scheme of things. Especially considering that meant two years off Kazuki's already expected short life-span. Though something clearly happened between Soushi's last memory and what Kazuki remembers.

With most of the water drained from his hair, he pushes it back over his shoulder and looks back towards shore. The waves are pulling at his legs still and he'd like to get out of the water. So he starts towards dry land, figuring that Kazuki will come along.]

The last thing I recall was leaving Tatsumiya Island to rescue Toumi-san.

[There might be quite a lot for Soushi to catch up on but Kazuki should know exactly when that was if two years have gone by. Maya most likely would have filled him in.]

[His legs move to follow suit, but he isn't paying any focus to them. Nor is he thinking about how he'd also like to now find some dry clothes.

Again, though, he's hardly thinking about that right now. Not after hearing those words, eyes widening.

Should he even be so surprised, though?]

Right. And it's been two years since then. The both of you returned safely.

[Again his chest feels tight. For a very brief moment he recalls how they had all had their Coming of Age ceremony before everything.]

And the battle against Vagrant. . .

[Dry clothes would be nice, he doesn't mind the beach but he'd prefer not to get dumped into the ocean without warning. Though at this point it's almost starting to become a trend. At least it isn't cold here in this section of the asylum. One would think that having a facility underwater would leave this place with a slight chill.

Ever since he got inside of a Fafner - inside Nicht - he knew he wouldn't have long. Hence the messages he recorded. Soushi can guess from Kazuki's reaction that he doesn't survive much longer.]

We won but not without sacrifices?

[It's actually not much of a question. They've all had their fair share of battles against the Festum and they've lost people despite their best efforts. As much as he might wish for all of them to survive, Soushi is aware of the odds - even should new (or old as the case may be) allies come to their aid.]

[Kazuki knows that it isn't. Nor does he need any of his mind reading abilities to be aware of what Soushi is thinking. He, too, had acknowledged what it meant to pilot, and the especial, more extreme risks of Mark Sein, in particular. He'd accepted that even in general he had had a very limited number of years.

But then everything changed. He very likely could pilot, now, with nothing to worry over. So if the need for it arose again, he'd do so without hesitation in order to protect everyone.

He simply nodded. A number of others had died, including several who had given their lives back to the Mir, like Emery and General Narain. But Soushi was a bit of a different case.]

But you. . .

[Even though he's long accepted and let himself be at peace with everything that happened with Soushi, somehow having to tell him is difficult. His brows drawn, he doesn't keep Soushi's gaze the entire time. There's a very obvious part of him that still aches, which in turn only leaves him feeling guilty.]

When the battle was over, and Kouyou, Kurusu, and I went to find you, there was an infant in your place, within Nicht.

[He knows he doesn't need to explain very much for Soushi to realize what he's saying. He had been reborn.]

After that. . . a new Mir was placed in Tatsumiya Island, and sunk for it to be given time to grow. We all moved to live on Watatsumi Island, where Ashoka had been taken in as its Core

[They both had the same thought when they agreed to step inside the cockpits. Both willing to give their lives if it meant that they could achieve peace. Of course neither of them could let their friends die either.

Either way, they're stuck in this place now without any access to Sein or Nicht because what warden would give them such powerful weapons? Though he doesn't doubt for a minute that if they had the opportunity, they'd do it all again.

Soushi doesn't ask for a list of the names of the fallen. He may not get to experience it for himself but he seriously doubted that anything he learned here would come back with him when he finally left this place. Therefore he could do nothing to save anyone even if he had the information.

As for the idea of being reborn... he thinks back to Tsubaki and Orihime. It was very likely that he'd be the same way. A new person who may remember the life before - who remembered him as he is now.

What does someone even say to that? Apologizing is not the right thing to do even though he's once again left Kazuki behind. Nor is saying thank you for surely his friend is taking care of his reborn self.]

You'll be able to return to Tatsumiya Island soon. For now it seems we're stuck here in this prison.

[Meaning that they should focus on that a little more.]

[The lack of and sort of surprise from Soushi was as he could have expected. The response is just as well. There's no use going on and on about something that's already in the past, even though at home there have been times where the reality of things still got to him. He always does his best to make sure the younger Soushi doesn't see or hear him during those kinds of moments. He tries not to let anyone witness that kind of thing.

Returning to Tatsumiya is still a work in progress even back home. Hopefully all of them back home will see their homeland again much sooner than later.]

We need to figure out what we're going to do. There has to be a way out.

[Although what he has learned so far is hardly promising.

His attention drops to just how soaked Soushi still is.]

. . . Though we should probably find somewhere where we can get different clothing, and for you to dry off. I'm glad you're okay; it was disoriented enough to have woken up in a park.

[Kazuki's past and Soushi's future. There is nothing either of them can do to change it. Better to focus on what's in front of them right now. He can't even do anything for Kazuki in the future, not as a toddler. At least not much.

Even if they aren't on their island they can still make a place home. It might not quite be the same but home is not a place but the people around them.]

Leaving this place won't be easy. No one makes a prison that's easy to escape from. For now we should learn more about our situation.

[Learn more about their fellow inmates and their attempts to escape. From there they can devise a plan of their own.

Despite the fact that he would like to be dry, they do have more important things to take care of.]

I'll be fine. Though it wouldn't hurt for us to locate some different clothing. [Something less... prisoner-like would be nice.] This certainly isn't a prison like I've ever seen or heard of before. It seems too pleasant at first glance.

[An obvious statement. He mused over the possibility that maybe this is another planet the Festum have reached, considering how deep beneath the ocean they are, but then reconsidered. Wouldn't there be more people? (No, not necessarily.) More so, though, it wouldn't be made out to be a prison.]

It does initially seem to be like a peaceful place. [An opinion which quickly was proven otherwise.]

. . . Except for the list of our crimes that were listed off. It's been done indiscriminately and without any context. [And the cuff around their ankles.]

We can go by the map available on the communicators we've been given. We'll find something.

[The way he responds sounds distracted, however, his mind clearly on other things.]

I spoke with an individual named Yuuki a little earlier on. She just arrived today as well, but apparently had been here before. She said nothing of how she escaped; only that she had disappeared. And how she's not so sure she even went home at all.

[It's illogical to come to any conclusion until they have more information. Whether there were Festum here or not would be something they would have to discover but if there are, they aren't inside MarinaNova itself.]

I highly doubt that it's as peaceful at it appears. [Even just on their world, prisons were not known for being all that safe. That was without the threat of a Festum attack.]

To imprison us long-term without a trial is unjust by any law. [If they can accuse him of genocide then they should be bringing in Festum as well.]

We should also secure a place to live.

[That was more important than finding clothing - at least in his mental list of priorities.]

If she did not go home, then where did she go? [A rhetorical question because he doesn't expect Kazuki to have the answer.] Perhaps another prisoner will have some answers.

Of course it isn't.

[He doesn't even sound bitter, instead it's more along the lines of being jaded. It doesn't need to be said that they should always be alert, although for what, Kazuki only knows so much.

There have been dinosaurs, for one. Even though, honestly enough, when Yuuki mentioned that, he was more bewildered than not.]

The wardens are only doing so for amusement.

[But yes, asking around is obvious enough.]

Yeah, we should. There are a couple of apartment complexes acccording to the map.

[One thing, however, does stick out.]

Also, they. . . [one of his hands balls into a fist]

—She told me that if we ask about our absence back home, the wardens will tell us that we've been replaced with a clone that looks and talks like us, but will make less mistakes than us in the future.

[Plus there's the thing about how their real bodies are "taken care of." How all of this isn't real.]

[Their own island had been peaceful for a time until they crossed paths with Emery and the others. But they all knew it could end at any time.

Soushi makes a soft sound of displeasure.]

We're conveniently trapped for their entertainment.

[It's not Alvis but it would have to do. He pulls up the map and begins looking for where the apartment buildings are located in comparison to where they are on the beach. Then he starts out for the nearest one so that they can take a look at it.

At that piece of information, Soushi looks over to Kazuki.]

You're from my future - do you believe that I was replaced by a clone?

[This may not be their real bodies but it was certainly their real minds. Their thoughts and feelings were here inside this underwater dome, meeting and talking.]

[He brings up his own map as well, then having remembered passing one when he was first headed towards the shore, but hadn't taken the time to go inside. He knows there are three complexes in total, though.

The question actually makes him pause to think.]

No. I don't.

[Which means, if that really is the truth, it was completely seamless.]

Nor do I believe the "you" who was reborn had something to do with this place.

[Even though that also could have been true. He wants to believe there has been nothing off with that boy.

His brows slightly knit.]

I've also asked about the world above, but there doesn't seem to be much information on that. I guess that shouldn't be especially surprising.

[There are stores and other places they'll need to visit but they're located in different sectors. So Soushi mentally plans out their path.]

We may as well go by and see the apartments in this sector before going to find some clothing.

[A nod of his head. While the reborn version of himself may not have anything to do with this place, clearly this one does now but he's just as clueless as his friend.]

He may not be the exact same but I doubt he would do anything to harm or displace the residents of the island.

[Especially not Kazuki seeing as how he was the boy's caretaker.]

Perhaps we'll be able to find some information regarding the surface in the library or even the museum. We should check both when we have time.

Of course not. He's a very sweet and bright kid; everyone adores him. He'd never do anything like that.

[He can't help but smile as he speaks those words, and is so incredibly fond. Kazuki really is proud. The whole clone thing is something he's just shoving to the back of his mind.]

That sounds like a good plan to me. [A bit of a wry look, though faint.] So far it seems we'll have plenty of time.

[Soushi almost wants to dispute the "sweet" part but recalls a time when he was more childlike. Before that fateful day by the radio.]

I'm sure.

[Well, the child may not but Soushi certainly is guilty of it. He's held the lives of many allies in his hands and they've gotten hurt or worse. Something he would have prevented if he could have.]

Once we've secured a place to live, we can make a list of all of the supplies we'll need.

[Yeah, Soushi. A two/three-year-old isn't going to be super serious and calculating.]

Right.

[He looks further up shore, aware of the athletic center, and having noticed the stables. As well as there being what looked like a convenience store. The map is straight forward, but there are plenty of locations to look into.]

Let's go, then.
