I don't take it for granted. [Her voice is calm, thoughtful.] I know how good things are here. Plenty to eat. Relative safety. Shelter. It's beautiful. We can learn. We can have medical care. Nothing is asked of us, and we can do with it what we want for the most part. Some of us are getting a second chance at life metaphorically or literally. We can make friends here and fall in love. [She's done both.]
I'm grateful that I was taken. [Here it comes.] But...a gilded cage is still a cage, and there are a lot of people who don't deserve to be here and would rather be home. What this place is doing is wrong.
