Day 322 | Open Action | Closed call to Gwen
[Video | Closed to Gwen]
Gwen? How have you been holding up these past few days?

[At the Clinic]

She had taken a few more days than she intended, but Martha figured her coworkers couldn't fault her for that. Today, she and Patch were back at the clinic, primarily performing inventory and generally cleaning. Anything to keep her busy. Because if she wasn't busy, she was thinking about Ianto. And the secrets.

There was only so much she could do though. Finally Martha had to collapse into a chair behind the desk and close her eyes, trusting her dog to let her know if anyone came in.

Nico pushes open the clinic door and ... Ms. Jones is asleep? Okay. Well. He doesn't want to be a bother. He can patch himself up if he has the supplies. (Little accident with the sword he'd finally won back from the wardens. No biggy.) He can maybe find them himself. He creeps in, makes a shushing sound at the dog. Be a good dog?

Patch's dog tags jingle and Martha opens her eyes, regarding Nico wearily. Her professional gaze does finally come back - though perhaps a bit later than she had intended.

"Afternoon Nico. How can I help you today?"

She's already scanning him for any injuries.

"Oh, hey. I didn't mean to wake you." He stops trying to sneak through the room and frowns at the dog. Traitor. He's got one hand clamped over the opposite arm and his usual jacket nowhere in sight - it got too hot practicing in it. Three feet of sword is hanging from his belt. Totally safe. "Um, had a little mishap. I just need some gauze or stitches or something. I haven't really looked it yet? I don't know."

"I wasn't asleep. No matter," she replied, smiling gently as he pulls faces at the dog. Her eyes lock on his arm and she immediately stands, ushering Nico back to the exam room.

"How did it happen?" Martha asked, eyeing the sword.

Really, 'cause it looks like you were sleeping on the job, lady. "Rebounded off a dummy. Didn't react fast enough. I've been out of practice."

He follows her back and gives the exam room a Look. Not tiny, but he's not thrilled. "We can keep the door open, right?"

"If you'd like," she responds, waiting for him to let her actually examine the wound.

"It's not too deep, though a few stitches wouldn't go amiss," she replied. "When was the last time you did practice?"

"Do what you want to." He makes himself comfortable, shifting his sword off to the side to keep it out of the way. "It's been a while. Before I turned up here. Something like this I could heal pretty quick pretty quick back home. I forget it's not so easy here sometimes."

"You have powers that heal?" she asked, somewhat taken aback. Not usual in her world. Martha grabs some hydrogen peroxide and a swab. "This is going to sting," she warns before swiping the liquid across the cut.

"But those powers don't work so well here?"

"Oh no, not at all!" He cringes a bit. Evil stuff. "Wouldn't make sense for me. Healing is more Apollo-kid territory. No. Demigods can eat a small bit ambrosia to heal themselves. But too much is fatal."

"Right... ambrosia. I'd forgotten about it. Humanities was never my strong suit," she replies. Martha notes his wince... perhaps she should have used the numbing cream first. Oops

She grabs that and a stitch kit then, turning on a light to take a better look at the wound.

"Anyway. No ambrosia, no fast healing. Normal like everyone else. Yay." He watches her with some fascination. The last time he'd been stitched up, he looked like a Frakenstein experiment. The scars on his upper arms are still new and jagged. Reyna did the best she could. "Jack says you're from his world. Were you a doctor there too?"

"Well, lucky for you, some of us normal people actually are fairly good at healing other normal people," Martha replies with a grin as pulls on rubber gloves and then numbs the area around the cut. Giving it a minute to really do it's job, she pulls out the needle and starts working. She's good at stitching people up. If he scars at all, it'll be faint.

"I was. Chief Medical Officer for an organization called UNIT. Though most of my job was yelling at the head of the London headquarters for being a bloody idiot."

"Oh, does it suck to be in a place like this then?" He watches her, not at all bothered. He'd seen far worse. Call it a learning experience for the next time he had to do it himself. "What did you do? It usually hurts more than that."

Martha can't help but laugh. "Does it suck to be in prison? Yes. Though this is far from the worst thing to ever happen to me."

She continues stitching, her eyebrows lifting in some surprise. "I used a numbing cream. I find it's much easier to stitch people up when they aren't tensing from the pain."

Numbing cream. Huh. "That would have been useful," he grumbles.

"I guess it's not worst place to be, if you're going to be stuck somewhere."

"Useful when?" she asked. Not many people really needed numbing cream other than when they're injured.

She nods. "When things are quiet, it's actually quite lovely. Almost like a holiday. It's too bad that when things go wrong, they go really wrong."

Though that's not unlike her regular life...

He'd shrug if she weren't working on him. It's his go-to form of expression - say something without saying anything. He does have a hand free to pull up the sleeve of his opposite arm enough to show three jaggedy scars. "Don't tell anyone, but I might have passed out."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Martha takes a quick glance at his scars before finishing up the stitches. She bandages the wound and throws away her gloves before turning back to him.

When she does turn her attention back to him, Martha rolls up her right sleeve to show him the scars that run up from her wrist and disappear under the sleeve. Nico can't see them, but the scars travel all the way up to her shoulder, and there's another set across her back. Plus the bite marks at her neck that everyone can see.

"I've done my share of passing out from injuries. And healing from injuries. Nothing shameful in that."

He whistles appreciatively. He's got bite marks like that too, though his jacket - when he's wearing it - usually keeps his a little less visible. "What did that?"

"A werewolf. I was on my way home from the clinic one night and he chased me. I took refuge in the bowling alley until I was sure he had given up. He's not here anymore."

She sounds a little sad about that. Oz had been one of her first friends, even if he had attacked and tried to kill her.

He snorts. He doesn't mean to. It isn't even funny. But it turns into a laugh before he can stop it. "Sorry, sorry." He points to his scars again. There's a matching set on the other arm. "Werewolf."

Martha shook her head. "Nope. I was only scratched, not bitten. At least not by a werewolf." She's glad it was a different werewolf and not Oz. Martha's pretty sure not everyone was thrilled about that.

"Are werewolves common back where you live?"

He nods. The rules are the same then. The bites are what gets you, not the scratches.

"Common as any other monster, I guess? I've only ever had one encounter with them, but I know companions on mine have fought them as well."
