So could ebola. And frankly, ebola is a lot more scary.

[If she was watching this scene as a movie, she would've yelled at herself to step back and call for some goddamn help. But even though she knows all the different ways to recognize a threat, and even though she sees them in Nathan, she doesn't register him as a threat. He's just a teenage poser trying to seem tough and fierce, and Veronica refuses to show fear in front of posers.]
