[ An uncertain voice comes on the network; despite his native time period, he's actually dealt with this kind of communication before, but this device is something else entirely. Not at all like what they had in the City. ]

Uh. Hello?

[ Well, that's one place to start. ]

I'm… I'm not exactly sure how I got here, but. Hi. My name is Todd. I, uh... I was just in a place called the City, and I... well, I don't know if the door brought me here, or if I was just taken here, but. Either way, I'm here now.

[ He's nervous, and there's a good reason for it - one he voices after a slight pause. ]

Neil? Are you here?

Yeah... I think so...

[ You can likely hear the fumbling of fingers as he reaches back and tries to locate the buttons in question... and then there it is, suddenly. ]

Oh!

[ This is more advanced than the hardware in his last mysterious entrapment between universes. ]

Wow.

Kinda neat, huh?

Yeah...

[ You'd think he would be less fazed by now, but. Nope. ]

I, um. Where I came from, we sort of had something like this, but it wasn't this... [ futuristic? ] advanced.

Really? I'd never really seen anything like it before I came here... I mean, we had cell phones but they're not exactly the same either.

Well, we never had anything like this at home, but... I was in a place called the City, and they had a network, but the devices weren't like this. More like... typewriters with screens.

Oh, so you're not from there originally? Like, you were in a different place that wasn't your home before you came here?

Yeah... the City took me from home almost five years ago. It did that, with people from all kinds of places and times.

And then we were just told anyone that didn't belong there had to leave, and... I guess it brought me here.

Five years? Wow... I don't think anyone's been here longer than six months. Maybe a little more than that.

Yeah. I mean, I didn't really mind it there. Things weren't always great, but... there were a lot of people I cared about and after a while, it just kind of became home, too.

I suppose that might happen to those that are here too, eventually... if we stick around long enough.

I... I think it sort of does. I mean, now I think almost anywhere can become a home. It's... the sort of thing that just happens without you really noticing.

[ Some part of Todd is worried about that - if Neil is here, his initial impression is that he's content to make what they can of this place. But if they just end up displaced again in a few months... ]

The sort of thing that just happens... [ Hmn. ] That was really nicely put. I guess home really is the sort of thing that happens when you're not looking. It's not just furniture and curtains.

[ Very slightly flustered there. Words are Todd's thing, but confidence is not - so when they're remarked upon, he's always pleased and somewhat taken by surprise. His voice is small, at first: ] Thanks.

[ But then he speaks up again. ]

I think so... I always think of home as being about people, and-- well, how you feel there.

I agree. Maybe it's more that a house can feel like a person than that it's always a home.
