[ it could be said that seven's humor is a way of dealing with the harsh reality of her existence, but it's mostly the sadder reality that she doesn't really know anything else. of course, the commander is unaware of her history. he likely doesn't know that she is the child of the rebellious hansens, who defied orders, crossed borders, and followed a relatively unknown species into a quadrant devoid of human life. doesn't know that she was only six when she was assimilated, that she grew up borg and up until recently viewed the collective as her family, initially angry at captain janeway for taking her from the borg when the borg was all she knew. and while she does remember some of her childhood, it's about as much as anyone really remembers about being so young.
a girl who grew up friend and sibling -less on a tiny research vessel with only her parents and dormant drones for company wouldn't have had very many tangible social skills or a healthy perception of the world, either. ]
