Day 243 // video ; action - sector 3 ; voice - private
[ Hello Marina! Is that the sun - the actual sun, somehow managing to penetrate miles and miles of harsh, unforgiving ocean? Is it a spotlight streaming down on the source of some incredible drama?

No, it's a young 'man' in a motorcycle helmet, lounging against a Vespa to make 'his' first-ever network broadcast. Hold onto your hearts. ]

Yo. Is there a mechanic in the house?

[ On second thought, maybe she better remove her headgear. Tossing her bangs, Haruka takes the helmet off - her hair flows; the air glitters. Apparently unaware of this nonsense, she fixes the camera with a brilliant, slightly mischievous smile. ]

I've got a little project.

[ Alternatively, you can find Haruka puttering around on her new toy vehicle - or, if you're in the Pa-Ching Arcade, peering over your shoulder and watching you play. It doesn't matter what game you're a fan of; she's checking out your skills (and if you're a girl, probably checking you out, too). Just...not announcing her presence. Yet. ]

Voice; private to Michiru

I found the beach. Shall we cruise it?

The bike store has a few. It's a piece of junk, though.

[ She nudges it. Anything that can't break 100mph doesn't have her respect, no matter how impractical high speed would be around here. ]

I'm thinking of fixing that.

Well, I can do some stuff. [He smirked.] Might get us in trouble if we're caught.

[This was outside what projects he'd done here, but definitely not outside what he'd done back home.]

Will that be a problem?

[ For you, not for the Wardens. Noticing the papers, she sticks a hand out to receive them if he's game for handing them over. ]

Hardly.

[He grinned, letting her take what he had.]

This was just stuff me an' Kohran did here. Within their rules and her limits of technology knowledge. Where I'm from, stuff's a lot more advanced. I've done bigger stuff back home, but I don't have them here. They don't exactly fit.

[ Haruka nods, looking through his "resumé". She doesn't quite get what the size quip refers to, but can tell he's definitely from somewhere more advanced than the nineties she is. ]

Finding parts might be the biggest issue. But you don't seem to have had many problems...

[ She hands the papers back. ] You're hired. Congrats.

It depends on how and when you ask for 'em. And how well you can convert what you can find without asking. Rehab points can be tricky sometimes.

I've got all the tools already, though, so that part's good.

[He tucked the drawings into a pocket for safe-keeping.]

[ Tools are good. Though she's still all business, Haruka does look reassured. ] It'll have to be a scrounge job. I'm new.

[ She steps away from the scooter so her new mechanic can have a better look at it. They'll be able to get a feel for the project more once they're somewhere they can take it apart, but...there's only so much room for engine on this chassis. ]

What do you think? My goal's speed.

Alright.

[He reached over and checked the scooter as it was. Vespas were pretty self contained, so getting to the engine would take a bit. They'd have to lift the seat, open a panel or two, and put it on a lift.

But, size-wise, it had a little bit of room to expand. This was going to have to be creative.]

I could probably bore out the engine a bit, add some larger pistons, but there isn't much room to put a bigger engine in there unless it sticks out of the side hatches.

Which, while feasible, might actually just burn your legs.

[And that would be a bad thing.]

[ It's a small canvas to paint a masterpiece on, that's for sure. A small, compact masterpiece. Alas. ]

I'd rather avoid that.

Bigger pistons would be fine. It's not built for withstanding too many adventures, anyway.

[ A pause. ] We could build almost from scratch, but I doubt this place would be so accommodating.

I did help on a steam-powered bike with Kohran for PM so she could use it for mail deliveries.

[Speaking of... he'd been meaning to talk to the Wardens about the Post Office... thought to himself for later. He looked a little distracted for a second, and then refocused.]

It was Kohran's idea, hence the steam, but it actually came in handy because it was pretty efficient for this location. I'm not saying we go steam powered, since it didn't go super fast. I think you'd probably get more power out of this than what we did on PM's bike...

But, you get the idea. We took an existing bicycle, and upgraded it. The engine, though, we did from scratch. I've never done a whole gas engine from scratch before. It could be fun if we got permission for it.

I could always ask instead of you. I've been here for a while... stayed under the radar... done other projects. They might let me.

[ The references to specific people do go over this newbie's head, though she won't make a fuss about it. And she doesn't want to impose, but hey, if you're into the project... ]

Do what you want. [ She's smirking, though. If there's one thing that can make a good impression on her, and quickly, it's people who have a passion and are following through on it. Plus, she's only human. It helps when their interests align with hers - and this much enthusiasm is contagious. ] Would it take you long to put a blueprint together?

Couple days or so. I mean, a basic engine is the same no matter what. The main design hasn't changed much since it was invented. I'll figure out what I need and what I can get and what I need to fabricate from something else.

Duo Maxwell. Nice to meet ya.

[ The only thing manlier than Haruka's wardrobe is her handshake - firm, brief, but without a trace of restraint. Her smile does look rather as if they've just agreed to become partners in crime.

Except they're already 'criminals', but whatever. ]

I'm glad you agree.
