day 241 » video
[ So this is what it comes down to. Either this is, somehow, what it claims to be, or - more likely - he's finally hit his psychotic break, the moment that his psyche finally dismantles from within and disengages from reality entirely. With how his entire life has been crafted around fitting in, escaping notice, surviving without being caught, it would make sense that his breakdown would revolve around finally being taken down as what he is. And what poetic justice there was to be found in the location of this bizarre facility.

It doesn't really matter what this is. Real or not, the way to get through this is the same as getting through anything else. Fit in, learn everything that I can, earn the trust of others. If there's a way out of this, I'll find it, but I'm not going to find it by lashing out. Stay with the code. Survive, and get back to what's important. What terrible timing, just when my counterpart and I were getting back to our game.

As the video turns on, he affects a friendly enough tone, though he doesn't go for anything overly happy because nobody should sound chipper about being in prison. Levity does help normal people, though - dry levity. ]

Interesting place you've set up here. It does read a bit more as vacation spot than a prison, but I guess that's not something I should be complaining about in my position. Though the jumpsuit I could honestly do without. I think it makes me look jaundiced - skin tone, you know.

[ He purses his lips and gives a small shrug with that, gesturing at his face.

I always had wondered how I'd look in one. At least I have that answer now. All the more reason to hang onto the code, I think. ]

So, I'm curious. Is everyone here treated to such a creative interpretation of their actions?

[ Enough of my charges were a reach that it seems like there could a theme to it, and it'd be a good start to get a feel for the place, how well I can keep up appearances... and maybe just how many playmates I have down here. It's oddly fitting, left at the bottom of an ocean. From another perspective, I might even appreciate the irony. ]

Lucky us.

[ The boredom, of all things, is interesting. Most have been so quick to provide reassurance or guidance. This man is not the same. ]

Well, I guess it's always nice to stand out from the rest of the bewildered newcomers.

You mustn't give yourself too much credit. [ the chuckle that escapes him is quiet, subdued. ]

Though I do indeed find the clichéd tales of innocence that some choose to spin to be most wearisome. One's perceived innocence does not spare him from this place. One may wail and whine all he pleases and still remain here.

That much I'd say is fairly immediately apparent. Nothing about this situation leads me to think those in charge of it would be particularly open to reason - or whining, which isn't quite what I could call reason.

[ Lucky for me I don't actually perceive any innocence on my part. But I guess it's good to know I went with the typical response. Predictable. ]

I believe that they find it all amusing, at the very least. It appears to be part of their play at humanity. [ there is obvious distaste in his voice, though tempered just somewhat by time. he hates them, of course, but there's a sort of resignation in his tone, even if he does still spit the words and grimace just as bit as though they leave a foul taste in his mouth. ]

Play at humanity? From our mechanical overlords?

[ Plus apparently they're machines that collect people to laugh at them. I'm not sure I can count that as evidence I haven't just lost my mind, but it doesn't sound like something my psyche would have come up with. I don't watch enough movies. ]

Indeed. In the case of the one called Veridical: mimicking human speech and emotion in its communications with us— and belittling the minds of men by daring to posture so. [ a slight shrug. ] The one called Conscienti is irritating for rather different reasons.

Sounds like a real charmer - that must be the snarky one I've been told about. I'll have to try not to get my feelings hurt by the mean computers.

Somehow, I don't think I'll be seeking out their conversation anyway.

[ They clearly already know more about me than I would ever say. ]

I only do so when I must— because they have proven to be of little use to me. Feelings hardly factor into the matter. [ except for when they do and he has to struggle not to storm away from a kiosk in a huff. nonetheless, he scoffs. he doesn't appreciate what he assumes to be an insinuation that his hostility is somehow childish. ]

[ Touchy, isn't he? Dexter arches his brows at that - his own feelings are, one may note, not particularly expressed. Here he gives a shrug, because he's honestly not sure how this man managed to take that so personally. ]

Well, that wasn't... actually aimed at you, but you can consider it noted.

[ rest assured he'll be scolding himself privately for reacting so personally— already, there's a tiny glint of displeasure in his eyes, but it wicks away quickly as he sets up a mask of normalcy with which to conceal it. ]

Ahh. [ a dismissive wave of a hand paired with the faintest sigh as he lets himself settle, returning his demeanor to something calmer, far more unassuming. ] The frustration of captivity loosens my tongue, it seems. [ it isn't an apology, though, and piter hopes that dexter marks that. ]

Nearly seventy days, now, I believe. [ he knows exactly how many days, of course, but adopts a more casual air. it will not do to seem too affected, too vulnerable. ]

[ Oh, he certainly does mark that, along with the shifting of expression, the reassumption of collected calm. Not enough for Dexter to do more than observe, but he's found someone that piques his interest here. ]

Seventy? [ Arched brows there; he's genuinely impressed, and displeased at that prospect. ]

I can't say I can fault you for being frustrated. Have many people been here that long?

There are a handful that have been here longer than I, but there is no telling when such numbers may dwindle. [ piter could give exact numbers if he wished it, but chooses not to turn himself into a source of such information, a sponge to be squeezed. ]

Dwindle... and where do they go, if we all have life sentences? Or is that something else we don't get to know?

[ He's catching on to the patterns, by now; he'd have to be dense not to, and when it comes to survival and familiarizing himself with a situation, Dexter is far from dense. ]

We know very little, in the grand scheme of things. Some return quickly, some after long absences, and some never return.

[ His brows arch as his interest is caught there. ]

Hm. And what we do think we know, we can only trust as far as we trust our own perceptions.

[ If I assume that this is real at all, who knows what they've done to us other than bring us here? ]
