[ So this is what it comes down to. Either this is, somehow, what it claims to be, or - more likely - he's finally hit his psychotic break, the moment that his psyche finally dismantles from within and disengages from reality entirely. With how his entire life has been crafted around fitting in, escaping notice, surviving without being caught, it would make sense that his breakdown would revolve around finally being taken down as what he is. And what poetic justice there was to be found in the location of this bizarre facility.

It doesn't really matter what this is. Real or not, the way to get through this is the same as getting through anything else. Fit in, learn everything that I can, earn the trust of others. If there's a way out of this, I'll find it, but I'm not going to find it by lashing out. Stay with the code. Survive, and get back to what's important. What terrible timing, just when my counterpart and I were getting back to our game.

As the video turns on, he affects a friendly enough tone, though he doesn't go for anything overly happy because nobody should sound chipper about being in prison. Levity does help normal people, though - dry levity. ]

Interesting place you've set up here. It does read a bit more as vacation spot than a prison, but I guess that's not something I should be complaining about in my position. Though the jumpsuit I could honestly do without. I think it makes me look jaundiced - skin tone, you know.

[ He purses his lips and gives a small shrug with that, gesturing at his face.

I always had wondered how I'd look in one. At least I have that answer now. All the more reason to hang onto the code, I think. ]

So, I'm curious. Is everyone here treated to such a creative interpretation of their actions?

[ Enough of my charges were a reach that it seems like there could a theme to it, and it'd be a good start to get a feel for the place, how well I can keep up appearances... and maybe just how many playmates I have down here. It's oddly fitting, left at the bottom of an ocean. From another perspective, I might even appreciate the irony. ]

Mm, unfortunately it's meant to sound so. I would be less than honest if I didn't portray to newcomers that this place can be as manipulative and disconcerting as it is resort-like, at times.

[His analysis of the Warden's crime descriptions draws a little, dainty laugh.] You have them quite well-pegged. Within the dome, littering and assault are treated with relatively the same level of severity. They do not understand the human concept of grey areas.

Well, at least you're not the first one to tell me it isn't all sunshine and roses.

[ He smirks there, a slight chuckle that gives his head a soft jerk. ]

I guess their approach is pretty self-evident - dealing entirely in absolutes, a criminal is a criminal regardless of the crime. Though I don't think that's quite what the legal system had in mind with standardized sentencing.

I feel as thought newcomers should be adequately prepared. Perhaps you'll be able to avoid the disappointments I endured. [Likely not, but she owes them her honesty.]

Mm, I quite agree. Whatever system of punishment the Wardens ascribe to, they have thus far refused to enlighten us as to the process. I, for one, would much prefer to have far more information about this place and its functionality.

That said, I will gladly answer any questions you have, if I can.

Generally, I do prefer to have a realistic idea of what I can expect, instead of false promises and platitudes. They might sound nicer, but I prefer information to be useful.

[ A lot of things in his life may be a front, but his scientific approach to understanding is most genuine. ]

And since I'm not one to argue against humans' evolutionarily prioritized needs, I guess the first step is for me to find shelter and food. Somehow I don't get the impression that we have cells.

No, thankfully. There are apartments in Sectors two and four, many of them are empty and we are welcome to pick whichever one we prefer. As for food, I suppose it depends whether you prefer to cook for yourself or to have food prepared and served to you. We have both options, as well as several bars.

That's quite the range of options for someplace that's, by definition, lacking in freedom.

[ Beats sitting on Florida's death row for a decade or two. Or three. God bless the legal system. ]

I guess that's probably good for preventing inmate uprisings.

Something like that, yes. [She manages to say that without sounding utterly jaded, even.]

There have been uprisings, of course. But typically, and unfortunately, they lead to more harm than good.

We are in something of a vulnerable position here - probably doesn't do much to facilitate success with that sort of thing.

[ Still, interesting that it's happened. ]

Can I ask how long you've been here?

No, probably not.

[And of course, personal questions are fine by her.] Nearing two hundred days, now.

[ He takes that in with a mild surprise, but surprise nonetheless. His brows arch and he draws a breath in and then lets it out slowly. ]

That's an impressive tenure - longer than anyone else I've heard from yet.

There are a few that have lasted longer, but the dimensional stabilizers don't seem terribly stable sometimes. We lose people frequently.

I'm not actually sure what question I should lead with here.

I'm guessing there probably aren't many answers, though. Seems like a pattern so far.

You'd be correct in that assumption. I wish I could tell you more, but those mysteries have yet to be solved.

Mysteries like exactly what a dimensional stabilizer is?

Obvious etymology aside, of course.

Just so. All we know is that it brings us from our respective worlds and frequently malfunctions. The results have been anything from vanishing inmates to new, non-humanoid inmates appearing, to making people transparent or turning us into children.
