day 241 » video
[ So this is what it comes down to. Either this is, somehow, what it claims to be, or - more likely - he's finally hit his psychotic break, the moment that his psyche finally dismantles from within and disengages from reality entirely. With how his entire life has been crafted around fitting in, escaping notice, surviving without being caught, it would make sense that his breakdown would revolve around finally being taken down as what he is. And what poetic justice there was to be found in the location of this bizarre facility.

It doesn't really matter what this is. Real or not, the way to get through this is the same as getting through anything else. Fit in, learn everything that I can, earn the trust of others. If there's a way out of this, I'll find it, but I'm not going to find it by lashing out. Stay with the code. Survive, and get back to what's important. What terrible timing, just when my counterpart and I were getting back to our game.

As the video turns on, he affects a friendly enough tone, though he doesn't go for anything overly happy because nobody should sound chipper about being in prison. Levity does help normal people, though - dry levity. ]

Interesting place you've set up here. It does read a bit more as vacation spot than a prison, but I guess that's not something I should be complaining about in my position. Though the jumpsuit I could honestly do without. I think it makes me look jaundiced - skin tone, you know.

[ He purses his lips and gives a small shrug with that, gesturing at his face.

I always had wondered how I'd look in one. At least I have that answer now. All the more reason to hang onto the code, I think. ]

So, I'm curious. Is everyone here treated to such a creative interpretation of their actions?

[ Enough of my charges were a reach that it seems like there could a theme to it, and it'd be a good start to get a feel for the place, how well I can keep up appearances... and maybe just how many playmates I have down here. It's oddly fitting, left at the bottom of an ocean. From another perspective, I might even appreciate the irony. ]

They'll listen. The snarky one will say something sarcastic and the other one will say sorry for the inconvenience and either way you stay here.

At least it sounds like we have a couple of charmers in charge.

[ Appeals wouldn't be the way to go, anyway. They know I belong in a prison, even by conventional standards. If this actually is real, I need to find my own way out. ]

Tell me about it. Definitely not my favorite robots. Not even my favorite overlords.

So, who are you? What's your story?

And I'm generally so fond of overlords, too.

Dexter Morgan, and... I'm not sure I have much of a story. I'm a forensic investigator from Miami. Can't say it's anything too exciting.

[The overlords comment gets a little smile from her and the occupation has her raising an eyebrow.]

This place is really filling up with law enforcement. If you start teaching a forensics class to go along with Dr. Reid's Criminology I might just leave here with a degree.

I'm not sure underwater domes can get proper accreditation to hand out degrees.

[ Explaining forensic science to laymen and novices? Sounds awful. ]

Law enforcement doing criminology classes in prison, though... that's a new one.

I didn't even know there was anything like an underwater dome outside of Atlantis at this point nothing surprises me. [Probably not true yet.]

He's FBI and there's a whole school down here. I think there was a glee club for awhile too. [Shrug.]

Atlantis as in you're referring to Atlantis as an actual place?

[ Because-- well, no. Whatever, clearly there's been a precedent established for disregarding reality altogether. Why not?

He only gets caught up on that a moment, though. ]

So there's essentially an entire functioning civilization inside of the underwater prison dome. Huh.

What else would I be referring to it as? A microwave dinner?

[But she'll see his moving on and move on with him.] Pretty much. I mean, you don't have to work and we don't have money, so there might be a few strikes against it as a civilization, but it's where we're living for now.

It was slightly mythological, last I checked.

[ Okay, so he can't quite let that go without another quip. ]

Either a few strikes against or for. I certainly know people who wouldn't take issue with that kind of an arrangement.

[ Decidedly not me - time off from work is one thing; time off from the rest of my pursuits is where I take issue. ]

Guess you should check again. I know someone from there. [She nods.] And the lack of structure thing might actually get old after awhile. [Defense force and school isn't quite the same excitement and involvement level she had at home.]

Right.

[ Maybe he's not the one who's crazy. ]

I know people who wouldn't take issue with it; I'm not one of them. I tend to prefer my routines.

[ Some more so than others. ]

[Hey now. She is a totally sane girl who runs around in tights with a bow an arrows fighting super criminals with other underagers including a guy from Atlantis and a girl from Mars. Normal Rockwell is setting up his canvas as we speak.]

I'm sure you can get all the routine you want here. Brush your teeth, have robots make you breakfast, go shopping for tentacle-themed home goods. You know, normal stuff.

[ Yes this sounds very normal and very wholesome. It will be on cookie tins for generations to come. ]

Of course. A home just isn't a home without tentacles.

[ Not quite all the routine I want. ]

So, I didn't get your story.

[The tentacles crack earns him a smile. Not too lame for an old guy.]

My story? [It's not that she is hiding it exactly, but when he asks she realizes she's not sure what to say.] I'm not sure which one to tell these days. I'm kind of used to more secrets back home.

Probably hard to feel like you have many secrets left after being read off your 'crimes'. Though you could make a story up if that suits you better.

[ Mine is, after all, a lie even in truth. Half of the equation, a puzzle with half the pieces missing. ]

How about a name?

It's Artemis. And I guess my story is I'm a high school student and crime fighter. Pretty typical for this place.

[ Typical? There's a slow nod as he takes that in. ]

That's an interesting side gig. I can't say that's all that typical where I come from. How do you fight crime?

[ Somehow I doubt that our methodology is the same. ]

I think in my case the high school student might be more the side gig. [She smiles and then shrugs.] Shoot arrows at it until it stops? [That probably sounds more deadly than the reality.] I'm part of a team we work covert assignments for a bigger team.
