[On a whim that became a want she pointedly voiced, Saber and Zelgadis are hanging out at the stables in Sector 1; the former eagerly getting in all the riding she can, guiding her mount with a visibly skilled hand and mutual ease through the jumps and obstacles or just galloping around without care-- however interesting the course is, nothing beats running-- until the time limit brings her back into the stall, and she feeds and brushes the horse down while waiting to be allowed to take another one out for a repeat.

The latter, hooded as usual, is doing a whole lot of nothing in comparison, notably keeping his distance from any of the horses and leaning against a far fence post while he simply watches the girl run about for the afternoon]

[Whatever part of him -- and it had been a large part, initially -- hadn't wanted to bother joining her on the grounds that it would be purely silly has been well and truly silenced within a few moments of seeing Saber ride.]

[She looks... happy.]

[On the far end of the field he can try not to look like he's watching her quite so closely, and so here he stays. Even from a distance he can see the differences in her movements, on her face. Even a pang of jealous insecurity that he could never be the one to make her look that way (or at least, never again) can't disrupt the peaceful feeling that settles through him.]

[She knew very well that he wasn't keen on coming and hadn't pretended otherwise to herself, not when she'd seen it in his initial expression and heard a little of it too. But, believing that she knew Zelgadis somewhat by now, she had thought he would warm up to it a little on his own if given some time and space, and so had let him be while she fell into a familiar past-time.

That hope finally becomes doused when she glances over for the umpteenth time... and he's still in the exact same spot. It's true that he can't ride the horses, but... Face falling into impassivity, she nudges her horse to trot over after a second of thought-- hopping down to walk once nearby. Though the horse balks slightly at getting closer, she rubs its face and tightens her grip on the reigns before speaking up to him]

...You do not wish to be here.

I -- what? [He'd seen her coming closer, and yet was still caught off guard when she speaks.] It's not that.

[He nods toward the horse, seeing its obvious tension. He should be used to people and animals alike fearing him, but somehow it's not something that ever stings any less.] It's afraid of me.

[Another rub of the horse's snout, and she frowns finally. Is this why he won't even interact with the horses in the stalls?]

They can scare at other people as well, you know. It is only because they do not know them... or you. [A little obstinately. She'd say it's the same for people afraid of him too, but there's a better way to prove this immediate point-- so she extends her arm out to him]

Give me your hand.

[Yet another discussion about how his skin doesn't really matter that much. He's sick to death of these, and really should just turn and walk off... but that she's asking for his hand...]

[With a sigh that he tries very hard to make seem defeated, he extends a gloved hand.]
Don't blame me if the horse runs off.

[Considering her iron grip, it'll be lucky to be able to pull away-- she's not telling him that, though. It does shift uneasily just as he predicted, but she ignores in favor of taking Zelgadis' hand in her own and resting still them on the flat of the horse's face.

She stays just like that for a few minutes until, even though it stamps and snorts a time or two, it's relatively calm]

[At first Zelgadis is as tense as the horse, keeping the rest of his body as far away from the animal as possible as Saber places his hand on its nose. His eyes go wide as the horse stammers, then settles.]

[He'd never thought...]

[Perhaps the mask over his lower face hides the soft smile that he can't quite stifle, but his eyes also shine with it. His fingers slowly curl, giving the horse a slow, gentle scratch.]

[Saber's almost as surprised when she feels him move his hand without any prompting, but it switches fast into a sense of accomplishment as she observes. Just this isn't enough however, and there's more that she can do to make her point, so she offers his free hand the reigns]

Hold these for a moment, please.

[He gets a quick look that tells him "don't let it go, or else" with them, before she hurries back to the stables for... something, that she apparently retrieves after a couple of minutes; her hands clasped tightly together as she runs back]

Ah -- [His almost-frantic questioning of what he was expected to do with the reigns never quite makes it out before she's off, leaving him more or less attached to a horse who he isn't sure is quite happy about it.]

[He holds the reigns tightly and tries to keep his body away, and the horse tries to jerk backwards. His strength and Saber's silent warning keep him holding on, but if he doesn't want to end up hurting the poor thing he'd better do -- something.]

[With a gulp, Zelgadis takes a slow step toward the horse, patting its nose very lightly, speaking to it in a low, even tone.]
It's fine. I'm not as bad as I look.

[The horse seems to calm a little, but he can feel the tension on the reigns as it considers yanking back. Another slow step, and his fingertips slowly stroke from between its eyes down the stripe on its muzzle.] Easy, there. We wouldn't want to disappoint her by letting go, would we?

[At first she was admittedly unsure on how well winging things would work out here; it's why she was so quick to return, just in case. But the scene she comes back to dispels any of that doubt and leaves only pleasant surprise and growing satisfaction at this turn of events.

For a short time, she watches his faint smile that he likely doesn't notice, similarly unaware of her own, before extending her free hand for the reigns-- but stopping halfway as though on second thought, and tilting her head with an almost teasing look in her eyes]

Or perhaps you have already become such good friends?

[He starts a bit at her reappearance, almost guilty looking as he shakes his head. Thankfully, his mask should hide his blush relatively well.]

Here. [He offers her the reigns.] You have quite a way of making a point. [Not that he seems mad about being "tricked".]

I am rarely one for words instead of action... and I felt you may have refused if I explained to you. [But she doesn't look sorry; her grin actually widens just a bit, and as she accepts the reigns back she raises her other hand to drop what she's been holding onto into his palm-- a single, large sugar cube-- with an expectant glance]

He will enjoy that.

[He sighs in that way he has where he's trying hard to look irritated when he's not.] I guess he will.

[Zelgadis holds the cube out for the horse, who takes it gladly. From the corner of his eye, though, his focus is entirely on her.] Do you have some vested interest in me getting along with the horses?

[She's seemingly engrossed in watching the horse enjoy the treat, even as he asks his question-- that she figures is likely not as casual as it sounds]

I thought you might enjoy yourself here if you could learn to do so. [Simply]

Hm. [Neither agreement nor disagreement, just acknowledging her words. She's not wrong, after all, that having animals tolerate his presence is comforting.]

[Still, they both know that's not the reason.]

You mean that I might feel less sorry for myself if the horse didn't run for its life.

Though not put quite in the words I would choose, the base sentiment is the same and correct, yes.

[Bluntly, as she continues to brush at the horse. She enjoys seeing him smile, and dislikes it when he hides away in self-loathing; it's quite simple, really]

[He's no longer that shocked when she simply says what's on her mind without bothering to fluster or deny it. At least, with most matters... though the rest of the time she was more likely to excuse herself than anything else.]

One day with one horse doesn't change much.

[Now she gives her full attention, leaving the horse alone in favour of pinning him with a stare of petulant exasperation at his baseless assumption-- still laced with concern, however admittedly obstinate it is]

I wish for you to obtain the form you so desire and will be happy with, I have always, and I have no doubt that someday you will. However, if you continue to lock yourself away until that day comes, your life and the events in it are going to pass by.

[Now it's her turn to lose her composure with an initial stricken look, that slowly dissolves and evens out until the hurt lingers only in her eyes and firmly stays there as she casts them downward from him. Her voice is faint when she finally speaks, it'd be hard to hear if they weren't right next to each other]

...That is unfair. [A low blow to her, since she's said time and again it's nothing to do with him and everything to do with her. He... deserves someone who can devote themselves fully to him, and she can't belong to another]

[She retreats back to the horse, mounting after a moment and forcing it to make a sharp turn back around]

[Haine is aimlessly wandering through the sector when he spots Saber riding on a creature he's never seen before. He at least knows what it is, a horse, but due to where he was raised and where he lived it was impossible to have seen one outside of a picture.

He wanders up to the fence out of sheer curiosity, barely noticing the cloaked figure not far off from where he stood. He'll silently watch Saber take the horse through the obstacle course with mild interest reflected in his otherwise flat expression.
]

((ooc: As a note, due to what he is, the Horse may not respond well to him if saber comes over with it. He would probably give off a scent that would make the animal take a defensive maybe? He's kind of got a predator smell/something dangerous about him. It may not freak the horse out but it may not want to go very near him.))

[Don't worry Zel, he's not interested in the lady what-so-ever. Actually, he'll notice when Saber comes over to him he'll be keeping a healthy distance from her.

The cloaked figure catches his eye and he nods back. Ah, the stoic types. Though if they ever got talking I'm sure they'd find things in common. He is somewhat intrigued by how the other is covered up though.

[Zelgadis' voice is smooth and smoky, likely adding quite a bit to the mysterious figure he cuts all covered up.]

[Scratching his cheek now. He hadn't really meant UNDERGROUND underground, even if it was below everything where the subways and sewer systems were.]

Our city is in different levels. The surface is where all the businesses and hustle and bustle are. More people and residential buildings, the higher up the more money you have. Normal people.

Below that are the poorer types, farther from the sun. And below that live the criminals, murderers, thieves, rapists, crime lords and such. I lived with them. [Where he belongs.]

I hate the surface.

[She's not one to show off for the sake of showing off but she is prideful, and a certain brand of confident, and others watching her be good at something definitely makes her puff up with an assurance that's clear as she turns her mount over to the newly arrived guest.

That confidence is briefly ruffled when the horse balks, stamps and generally makes a fuss about getting nearer, though, but she coaxes it over closer as much as she can with only a slight frown-- silently looking over the boy before speaking up. She's curious about that reaction, honestly, but doesn't want to possibly offend him...]

Luckily the horse balks. He's quite happy with the distance really so he does what he can not to seem spooked himself or rude for that matter. But then she edges closer and he ducks back a little. Just a pace or two to keep a healthy distance.
