Day 231: Video/Action Sector 3
So I've already found Inara. Anyone else out there? Kaylee? Zo? Wash? Anyone else from Serenity?

[For you normal Marina folks, this might be one of the first times you ever see Mal smiling!]

[ She was cutting through the park when she noticed Malcolm standing nearby being very unlike his first impression. Smiling herself, she walked up to him. ]

I see you are looking rather pleased today. Is it because of the return of your coat [ which she assumes was done some day prior ] or did an old acquaintance stop by for a vist?

[ her smile tightens but only out of wishful thinking that maybe, somewhere, her own team of friends was gathering together. ]

I see you have cause for celebration then, Mr. Reynolds. Should I likewise be hoping that they'll stay?

Why wouldn't you. I haven't managed to weasel my way out of here. But with them here, there's always a better chance.

Because, Mr. Reynolds, not everyone is capable of adapting to life in prison, even in a place such as this one.

And there are always loved ones who are left behind. You miss your friends after all, perhaps they have someone special waiting for them.

[ a clear sign that Peggy doesn't know nearly enough of Malcolm as she could. But it's still a sentiment she'd still much prefer not to assume. ]

[Mal thinks about it a bit.]

All mighty fine points. But I ain't quite adjustin' myself, an' it'll be lot easier to break out with 'em. An' it's nice to see my crew an' know they was OK after I left.

[ her smile warmed a few extra degrees ]

Perhaps you'll find a new crew then, at least until you manage to escape. I don't suppose there's an application I could fill, is there?

[ and while she may say it jokingly, she's half serious. Why else would she spend so much time in self study? She prefers leaving nothing to chance. ]

An application! Ha. Applications don't always work so well. People's good at lyin'.

So you prefer the personal interview then. [ her estimation is increasing. ] And not all men lie.

[ she paused, thinking of Steve. ]

At least not without without cause. Some lies may even be worth it.

You learn more from a person who ain't intervewin'. My mechanic. Second one actually. First one was an application and useless. Then he brought this woman onboard an' decided he would enjoy some personal time with her in the engine room. She fixed the ship while on her back.

Guess which one's my current mechanic?

[ she raised a brow at that rather... unconventional use of an engine room and did her best not to acknowledge the faint blush dusting her cheeks as she imagined, as she can only imagine, what must have gone on. ]

I see. At least you are a man who knows talent when he sees it.

[ it may also help that he wasn't proud enough to turn his nose up at a woman's help either. ]

'Course I do! Only accept the best on my crew.

[And the refugees that need help getting away from the Alliance.]

And what about you? What do you do outside of prison?

[ Peggy shrugged ]

Oh, you know. The usual.

[ but then she flashed a smile and laughed, a quiet bubble of mirth that showed just how relaxed she was. ]

However, I suppose a few details couldn't hurt. Other than helping my family out when I'm on leave, I'm also an aide to the United States army. I organize things and keep track of the deployment records. Now that the army is no longer needed in the capacity that it had grown too, I am also one of many who work to make sure that those soldiers who are let go do so in an orderly fashion.

[ and of course there was still much to clean-up after the Nazi's had surrendered. It was going to take a very long time before life returned to normal. If it ever did at all. ]

[ there's a wry smile on her face when she replies because she's gotten this question far too many times to count now. ]

I believe you like to refer to it was World War II. It's a shame our war to end all wars was not entirely effective. Do I even dare ask how many years is between my time and yours?

[Mal thinks back on what history he knew.]

That the one between the old countries Germanay and Japan? Or was it the United States and the others. I always get my ancient historic wars mixed up. Y'all fought so many of 'em.

Though we pretty good at warrin' out in the Black too. It's been centuries between yer time an' mine.

[ she raised a brow ]

Out in the black? I'm afraid I'm not quite familiar with that term. [ as is true of so many others, but after a brief moment, she moves on, answering his questions with a simple, elegant shrug of her shoulder. ]

I'm afraid it the war drew in many countries. Very few were able to retain their neutrality by the end. [ and if she says that with distaste, well... One should hardly cast stones. ]

However, in brief terms it was the allied nations -- Great Britain and the United States and so many others -- against the united front of Germany, Italy and Japan.

Right. That one.

[He actually has no idea what she's talking about. Well, vague idea maybe. History has so many wars though and he really doesn't care about any except the most recent one.]

The Black... space. I fly a spaceship. We live on many different planets now. Or in my time.

I see... [ she can catch the reference, now that it's explained ]

Tell me, Mr. Reynolds. Is it just as pretty out there in space as we've often dreamed?

[ The War of the Worlds not withstanding of course. She could still remember the widespread panic after that first broadcast in 1938. It had chilled nearly all of them to the bone. ]

Space? It's wonderful. Only place a man can be free anymore. Each planet's got its own quirks. Don't like none of 'em enough to call 'em home though. Alliance tends to stick its nose ever'where.

It sounds as though you're a troubled man. Is the alliance really so bad, or do you perhaps just prefer to live outside the rules?

[ she can understand restrictions and how restricting they could truly be; she lived and worked in the army, after all. But it worried her that freedom, according to Malcom, was in such short supply. What had she worked for these several years past, if not for that? ]

I prefer t'live in a world where the government takes care of it's own when it say it do. A worl' where the money don't sit with those top people in power while the majority go with next to none.

[He lowers his voice into a growl and looks away at the next part.]

I prefer t'live in a worl' where the government don't experiment on teenage kids.
