Day 241 | Video | Action--Open Mingle
[There is a very tall, pale, blonde man on the screen. He's wearing dark clothes and his blonde hair is slicked back. He gives the camera a charming smile. ]

I understand we're to be inundated with visitors today. I also understand that a sudden arrival here can be a disconcerting and that often requires a drink. I invite everyone to come have a drink at the Blood Shack in sector four. We've got a wide variety of drinks, both ordinary and unusual.

Come spend your day with us at the Blood Shack. We'd be delighted to have you.

[ The video clicks off.

Those that decide to take Eric up on his invitation, will find the Blood Shack up and running. During the day, a few bots can be found doing some of the mundane things like delivering drinks to tables, but during the evening Eric will be behind the bar and the presence of bots is reduced. The bar itself is dimly lit with small tables and booths places about. There's a dance floor and a stage with a pole at one end. The other end of the stage is occupied by what can only be called a throne, which Eric occupies when Spike is behind the bar. There is also a jukebox that customers can play. ]

[ooc: feel free to use this as an open mingle. I've turned off comments so if you want to speak directly to Eric, comment there.]

Liz takes her time on patrol today. This sudden party or whatever it is has caught her attention and she wants to make sure it's not going to get out of hand. Old habits and all that. She's keeping a careful eye on everything around her, though at some point she'll make her way to the bar to check it out. She's not looking for a drink, not of the alcoholic variety anyway, but she glances at the man nearby.

"This place has a lot more people than I was expecting."

"It's a popular place," Jack agrees, looking her over with interest. It's obviously the first time she's been here, and she doesn't really give off the nightlife vibe, so he instinctively wonders why she's here. Vampire hunter or some such comes automatically to mind, given what he's learned about such people since he's been here.

Or, of course, she could just be after a drink.

"New today, or just haven't made it in here yet?" he inquires. It's a relevant question - today.

"Just haven't made it in before," she answered with a tight-lipped smile. "This isn't my type of place normally, but I thought a good patrol around to learn the dome as much as possible would be a good idea."

A good sheriff always keeps track of her town, no matter where it is.

"Learning as much as you can is almost always a good idea," he agrees, and quirks an eyebrow, leaning forward slightly, interested for more than one reason. "'Patrol' isn't the sort of word everyone uses for it, though. Law enforcement? Of either the natural or supernatural variety?"

The fact that he mentioned the supernatural at all makes Liz's eyes narrow slightly, but other than that, she gives no sign that she's noticed his word choice. "I'm the town sheriff of Mystic Falls. It's habit to always be on patrol. I'd rather not be caught slacking."

"Mystic Falls? I'm guessing we're talking supernatural law enforcement as well as natural, then, huh?"

He's pretty sure that's the name of the place that Rebekah and several of the other vampires around here are from, after all.

"Don't assume something based on the name of the town. Our founders had a sense of humor."

No, they didn't, but she doesn't know this guy and she's not outing anyone as a vampire or other supernatural being if she can help it. Whatever he wants to think, she's going to play her part as the town's very human and very ignorant sheriff.

He chuckles. “That’s not what I’m basing my assumptions on. I’ve met several people from Mystic Falls here already, and by no means all of them were human.”

He smiles, and offers her his hand. “Captain Jack Harkness. I was in a kind of supernatural law enforcement myself, back home.”

Liz still eyed him warily, unsure if she wanted to trust his words or believe he was trying to fool her into outing someone. "Liz Forbes," she finally answered, taking his hand and giving it a very firm shake. "I'm Caroline's mom."

He could take that for what he wanted.

"I'd like to know who you've met so far. Maybe I can help straighten things out."

Well, that is a good, firm handshake. He likes her more and more. "Good to meet you, Liz Forbes. Yeah, I met Caroline, a while ago. You know she's here? Quite a girl. Sings a mean bit of karaoke!"

It's funny that he's quite right about her being supernatural law enforcement, as much as that happens in Mystic Falls, and she knows what Caroline is. She knows about Stefan and Damon and Tyler, too, but she's not going to reveal their secrets for them.

"She found me on my first day here." So, yes, she knows. "I'm very proud of what she's done and the young woman she's become."

If that sounds like it has a double meaning to it, it definitely does. Liz knew Caroline before she turned, when she was just a human girl whose only worries were about the cheerleading squad and the next boyfriend. Now Caroline is a strong, brave, intelligent young woman who routinely fights for her friends and what she believes in. She was even Miss Mystic Falls, something Liz had never cared about until she saw how much it meant to Caroline.

"It's nice to know she's making quite a few friends here."

"She's pretty popular, from what I've seen," he nods. "I've only really talked to her the once, but I know she's been busy organising things to keep up morale, that sort of thing! The thing I met her at, actually, was a party here that she was involved in organising. That was quite a night. Met quite a few vamps that night."

He pauses, eyeing her, wondering how much she'll divulge. Not a lot, he suspects, but this is the first time he's talked to anyone from Mystic Falls who wasn't a vampire.

"What can you tell me about Rebekah Mikaelson?" he asks casually, leaning an elbow on the bar.

Liz's eyes narrowed just slightly at the mention of vampires. Either he's met vampires in his world, he's met them here, or he knows about the vampires from Mystic Falls. Or maybe it's some combination therein. Whatever the case, Liz is curious, but still very cautious.

"She's a very strong person," Liz commented, still on the topic of Caroline. "She's always busy, always involved in making everyone's lives just a little bit better. And of course, as her mother, I have to make sure she's safe and happy."

A very thinly veiled warning that if anything happens to Caroline, Liz will be there to take down the responsible.

"Not much. I've never actually met her." She knows Rebekah is a vampire, one of the Originals if she's not mistaken, but she doesn't know much else. "If you'd like to know more, I'd suggest talking to her yourself."

He nods. "Of course. I had a daughter too." Had, because even though as far as he knows Alice is still alive, he doesn't expect her to ever speak to him again. "I'd have done anything to keep her safe and happy."

It cuts to the quick that he couldn't do both. Keeping her safe meant sacrificing her son, to save the world.

He doesn't think he'll ever forgive himself, let alone expect her to forvive him.

He takes a breath and forces a deflective grin at Liz's suggestion that he talk to Rebekah. "Oh, I've already talked to her - and a lot more than talked!" he confides. "She's a fascinating woman, just a bit... old-fashioned. Which I suppose I should have expected if I'd thought about it."

Liz might not know why he's giving her that expression, but she understands it, knows what he's not saying, and so she nods once in response. "It's never been easy for us, either." Only recently have they been able to actually talk and a lot of that is because Caroline suffered a fate Liz had worked so hard for her entire life to prevent.

"Maybe I'll have to take after you and see if I can get her to talk to me."

She doubts it. As far as she knows Rebekah isn't a friend of Caroline's, but there's always the chance that she's wrong.

He gives her a sympathetic glance. "It must have been hard, having something like that happen to your daughter, especially when your line of work involves trying to prevent such things."

He swallows slightly, trying not to think how much that applies to himself too, and thinks instead that at least, this way round, she won't end up with a daughter who looks older than she does, like him.

Which isn't something he can say to her either, so he gives up on that tack and returns to the subject of Rebekah.

"It might be a good opportunity to speak to Rebekah, while you're here. Neutral ground and all that. Good chance to get to know people you wouldn't normally have the chance to?"

Liz just studies him for a moment, only offering a nod at the return to the topic of Rebekah. She's curious, wants to know what he knows without giving away too much.

"What do you know about Caroline?"

It's a simple question, harmless enough, but if Jack knows what he's implying, she may as well find out so she can stop pretending. It might be nice to be able to talk a little more freely.

He stays calm as she studies him, waiting for her to ask what she's going to ask.

"Not an awful lot," he admits easily, spreading his hands slightly. He has only spoken to her the once, after all, but he's also spoken to other people who know her, and he does tend to keep track of the messages on the network too. "Just that she got turned, and that it's still fairly recent."

And then he waits again, for her response.

Liz nods and crosses her arms over her chest. "The one thing I was trying to protect her from." A huge admission from someone like Liz. She knows about vampires, had known longer than most people in Mystic Falls, was a human sheriff who had protected people against vampires, and she knows what her daughter now is. She's also not about to let anything happen to Caroline now. The first person to hurt Caroline will have to deal with Liz.

It's obvious that this is hard for her to share, and he feels he should make some disclosures of his own, to meet her halfway.

"I know how that feels," he says tentatively. "When you can't save the ones you love, even though you've dedicated your life to the task of just that."

She nods, feeling suddenly that they have a lot more in common than either of them originally thought. "But you still have to keep trying, even if you don't know how."

“Yep.” Though there’s a shadow there at the back of his eyes as he follows the thought through to where he did eventually give up. “Until it just gets too much, at least. Sometimes, there comes a point where you just can’t take the responsibility any more. Where, somehow, it’s easier just to give it up and let the bad things happen.”
