day 223: video;
[ she's actually using the video feature for this post and she's looking... well, what can be seen of her doesn't look great, but neither does it look awful. her arms aren't visible, which is probably for the best, and her cheeks are almost healed. thank goodness for superficial and quickly-healed injuries. either that or she's at just the right angle that it's difficult to see. for those who have run into her lately, she looks almost pleasant and she certainly sounds much better than she did a few days ago. ]

For those who may be interested, Sector 3 now has a medical clinic. It won't replace the hospital, by any means, but I thought, under the circumstances, there might be others like myself who would feel better being cared for by a fellow inmate.

[ at least she knows she'll feel better with it here. ]

I've only received permission to deal with small things, so consider it more of a nurse's station and less a doctor's office. However... [ here she gives a slight pause. this is where things will get interesting. ] I assure you that I am more than capable of handling anything necessary. My experience covers everything from papercuts to burns to complex neurological surgeries and I can take care of any species that walks across the threshold, be it human or something else entirely.

[ she means that, actually. ]

In light of that, I would also like to offer informal lessons. If you'd like to offer assistance or simply want to know more about medicine from the late 1800's to 2011, by all means. I would welcome the company.

Good day to all of you.

[ ooc: info post is here for anyone interested. ]

[ she frowns at it, gazing critically along the lines, her mind already formulating a plan for his recovery. ]

I would imagine so. I'd like to look at that as soon as possible.

[ so please come down to the clinic now. ]

[ matt wastes no time in heading over to the woman's office after wrapping things up with elena. as much as he would've loved to stay in her company, there are things he needs to take care of -- like the damage kol did to his shoulder. he wonders if this is really going to affect his nonexistent football career (how's the throwing arm, champ?) and if he should've taken rebekah's blood and been done with it. the risk of turning into a vampire didn't seem worth it. ]

Uh, hello? I didn't see a receptionist out there, so... [ awkward. also the bots kind of creep him out. ]

[ she's wearing a dress suit today and though it has long sleeves to hide most of the bandages, they can still be seen around her wrists. she was actually looking forward to the time those gashes would be fully healed.

when she hears someone enter the building, she moves from the treatment area in the back to the front room. ]

Hasn't really been much of a need for one yet. This way... [ she motions towards the back room and turns in that direction. there's a patient bed for him to sit on and a counter of supplies for her. ] My name is Doctor Helen Magnus, by the way. We didn't quite get to introductions earlier. [ she was a bit more worried about his injury.

her hands have been washed and everything's clean as far as she knows -- she spent enough time sterilizing everything, anyway. ]
If you're comfortable enough, I'll need your shirt off or at least your injury fully visible.

Matt Donovan. Thanks for taking the time to look at this, Doctor Magnus. I don't exactly have health insurance back home, so when you get hit with a beer bottle, your options are spend the next year paying off a hospital bill or let your friend fix it up with tongs and a first aid kit.

[ he does as told, used to being poked and prodded by the trainers in football whenever he pulled a muscle or scrapped something on the field. ]

Absolutely. Can't really call myself a doctor if I'm willing to let things like this go simply because they aren't bleeding, can I? [ her smile turns gentle. really, she's just glad her skillset will be put to any use here.

and at least she isn't squeamish in the least, either, perfectly content to strap on the rubber gloves and poke at his shoulder a bit. ]
Only one of the things I'm not so happy about regarding health care. At least for those of us in the US.

[ it doesn't look as bad as she'd feared, but it will need cleaning and bandaging. ] The good news is that this doesn't look too severe. I'll need to clean and bandage it and I'd prefer if you could minimize use of this arm until it's healed. I know that's a little difficult in a place like this, but do your best. I'd like to see those muscles heal well.

Considering the lack of tables that need to be bused and games that need to be played, I think I can make that happen.

[ no guarantees, though. he runs with the mystic falls crowd. ]

[ she offers a smile as she moves to wash and clean the wound, taking care not to hurt him more than necessary -- at most, it should only sting. and then she wraps it carefully. once done, she steps back to see how he's doing. ]

That should hold it until it heals. If it starts hurting more than a little aching or stinging, come back to see me. It shouldn't have trouble, but all the same, I'd prefer to keep an eye on it.

[ matt rotates his shoulder, testing the give and tightness of the bandages. more comfortable than anything the football team's trainers managed to rig up over the four years he was on the team. of course, they were all kids with extensive first aid training. this woman was an actual doctor -- like meredith fell. (except she probably didn't administer vampire blood to dying patients...) ]

I've been through worse. A broken bottle's nothing compared to having a Founder's Day float fall on your arm. [ fuck you, isobel. (or having your neck snapped by damon and coming back from the dead. alaric and jeremy never told him how much being resurrected hurt.) ]

[ helen's eyebrows rise a bit and she looks cautiously interested, offering matt his shirt as she moves to collect the rest of the supplies and put them all away. ]

I can imagine that would have hurt a good deal if that float was anything like the parade ones I've seen. No lasting damage, I assume?

None, thank God.

[ which, come to think of it, was probably thanks to caroline's blood. it heals everything, right? and it must've repaired whatever damage was done to his arm after the cast came off in addition to healing the wound on his neck from that crazed warlock. ]

That would've forced me to quit the team, and I wasn't exactly ready to surrender quarterback to someone else until after graduation. [ he pulls his shirt back on, starts buttoning it back up. ]

[ she smiles in response, turning once she's replaced everything in its spot and leaning against the counter. ]

Then it's quite fortunate you didn't have to do that. Your body heals well. That will come in handy.

[ and she's not judging him for anything. he's a nice guy and she likes him. ]

You're free to go now, if you'd like, and you're always welcome to return, even if it's just to visit. Not that I would blame you for wanting to stay as far away as possible. [ she's teasing gently, knowing how most people want to stay away from doctors normally. ]

[ if you take away the vampires, the magic ring that brings him back from the dead, and the supernatural hotspot of a hometown, that's really all matt is: a nice, normal guy. ]

To tell you the truth, if I'd actually had insurance growing up, I'd probably would've gone to the doctor more often. [ as it was, the time vicki ended up in the hospital after that party (after what he knew was a damon attack, not an animal attack) broke him financially. matt spent the few months paying off that hospital visit by sending money in under his deadbeat mother's name. ]

[ that is sadly something she understands completely. she offers an understanding smile. ]

You won't have to worry about that here.

[ come as often or infrequently as you like. she'll always be around. as long as she's here, anyway.

she's tempted to make a quip about health insurance not existing in her day, but for now she holds it back. teasing came come later, once they're a little more used to each other. ]
