day 223: video;
[ she's actually using the video feature for this post and she's looking... well, what can be seen of her doesn't look great, but neither does it look awful. her arms aren't visible, which is probably for the best, and her cheeks are almost healed. thank goodness for superficial and quickly-healed injuries. either that or she's at just the right angle that it's difficult to see. for those who have run into her lately, she looks almost pleasant and she certainly sounds much better than she did a few days ago. ]

For those who may be interested, Sector 3 now has a medical clinic. It won't replace the hospital, by any means, but I thought, under the circumstances, there might be others like myself who would feel better being cared for by a fellow inmate.

[ at least she knows she'll feel better with it here. ]

I've only received permission to deal with small things, so consider it more of a nurse's station and less a doctor's office. However... [ here she gives a slight pause. this is where things will get interesting. ] I assure you that I am more than capable of handling anything necessary. My experience covers everything from papercuts to burns to complex neurological surgeries and I can take care of any species that walks across the threshold, be it human or something else entirely.

[ she means that, actually. ]

In light of that, I would also like to offer informal lessons. If you'd like to offer assistance or simply want to know more about medicine from the late 1800's to 2011, by all means. I would welcome the company.

Good day to all of you.

[ ooc: info post is here for anyone interested. ]

Do you need any help? I'm a trauma surgeon.

[ oo another doctor. helen smiles warmly at that. ]

Absolutely. The more the merrier, in a case like this. You are free to drop by at any time.

Lovely. I'll be over in a mo'

[It takes a bit of time, but Martha does make her way over to the clinic and smiles at the woman.]

Hi... I'm Martha. And you definitely beat me to this. I had thought about it, but other things happened upon my arrival that made this a little out of the question.

Helen Magnus. [ both women have similar accents and the sound of another from england -- or somewhere with a similar way of speech -- is both familiar and comforting for helen. ] It's an absolute pleasure, Martha, and I do hope this will be to your liking as well.

[ it isn't much at the moment: a front room for welcoming and waiting, if they ever have enough patients for that, and a small back room leading to a few others where she's setting up supplies for two patient rooms to start and an informal lessons room. she has no doubt that these will likely get moved around at some point, but it's worth trying. ]

You're more than welcome to take a look around. I'm still in the process of organizing where everything will go, but I've a decent start on it. Of course, if you have suggestions, I'd be more than happy to hear them.

[ helen herself is dressed in a nice, long-sleeved dress suit that makes her feel a bit more normal. even those sleeves can't hide her wrists, which are wrapped (almost all the way up to her elbows under the sleeves), or the small pinprick-like cuts on her cheeks and neck from the glass shards that had been embedded in her skin days earlier. the latter injuries are healing quickly, as she had hoped, and aren't as noticeable as they once had been. however, she fully expects a fellow doctor to notice and won't be surprised if that happens. ]

[Martha did notice the wraps as well as pinpricks everywhere. She gives the woman a worried look, but refrains from asking as she casually tucks a stray hair behind her ear and reveals three lines of stitches disappearing under her sleeve. The stitches run up to her shoulder and then there's the ones on her back that Helen won't even see.]

It all looks good from what I can see. From what you said on the phone though... your a neurological surgeon?

[ the bandages are brand new at least and they appear clean. she'll periodically check and re-wrap them, but for now they work fine. helen takes note of the lines of stitches, wondering if those are the result of something in the dome or something that happened before martha's arrival here. for the moment, she decides not to ask or they'll be trading stories. ]

That's only one of the things I can do, though certainly one of the most impressive. In my line of work, it's best to keep an open mind and study everything you think you might need.

[ and she's certainly had the time to perfect and learn all of it, as well. ]

[Ah the fun of trading stories. Martha is a master storyteller Helen. Maybe you'll get to hear one some day.]

Yep, sounds like me. Lot's of trauma training for all sorts of species. And now that I'm here, I can study up on lots of other stuff.

[ she would love hearing other stories. she is just a private person by nature. getting stories out of this one can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth. ]

Well, then, it would seem you an I are fairly even, then. I certainly welcome someone who enjoys a good challenge.

[ she's going to enjoy working with martha, she can tell already. her smile warms. ]

We'll have to trade species information sometime and see if any of them compare.

And I'm sure we're going to get some challenges here.

[Martha thinks she's going to enjoy working with Helen as well.]

Definitely should trade information. Do you have any paper for patient files? I can get mine started so we have that on file.

[ there's a pad of paper in one of the desk drawers, which she draws out and offers to martha. ] It isn't much yet. I've literally only gotten it started a few hours ago, but you're absolutely correct. We should at least have the basics on file so we don't second-guess each other.

[ she pauses for a moment, thinking things over. ] Perhaps we could have a cup of tea sometime to discuss what we already know. Or coffee, if you prefer. [ she wrinkles her nose slightly. coffee is nothing good to her, but as long as she isn't expected to smell or taste it, she'll be fine. ]

[Martha starts to take the pad of paper and rummage about for a pen when Helen mentions tea.]

Tea sounds lovely.

[She paused as she wrote out her name, height, and weight.]

There's a few places around, but I've not tried any of them out. And we should definitely have a supply in here.

I hadn't yet managed to get there. For the moment, I'd wanted to get everything else set up and put away. But you're absolutely right. We need a stash in one of the cabinets.

[ she'll wait for the pad to do the same, debating internally about an "age" column. ]

[Martha finishes up her chart, writing the stitches down as a dog attack with an asterisk by them. She'll let the privileged few know if it's necessary. But at the moment, dog attack works just fine.]

Here you go.

[She pauses a moment before asking her next question.]

Have you had much experience with other species outside of humans?

[ they'd mentioned it vaguely, but helen pauses as she takes the paper and begins to write her statistics down, opting to ignore age. ]

My life's work revolves around helping non-human species, encouraging them to live among humans and protecting both species when co-habitation is unattainable.

[ that's right, they haven't had the "i'm a 160 274 year old human abnormal" discussion, have they? well, that will be fun. ]

Cohabitation? You actually have non-human species living in the same place as humans! That's brilliant!

Non-humans are just discovering us at the moment. And many of them try to take over the world. I work for a group that defends the earth against them, but I traveled with a man who always took the peaceful approach when he could. So I'm trying to turn things over in the organization as best I can.

[Martha's age isn't too scary, minus the part where she sort of has to make it up because she's not quite sure how to count it. Time alive or chronological according to the year it is. And she's also not fully positive how long she traveled with the Doctor.]

I always prefer the peaceful approach when possible. All life deserves protection. My organization works to ensure that humans and non-huamns can live in harmony. When one threatens the other, we step in to help.

[ martha's taking it better than she expected. that part, at least. she's still gauging how much she can trust the other woman, so the age thing will come shortly. in the meantime, she passes the paper back to martha, waiting for a reaction to her assertion. ]

Peaceful approach is my aim too. Like I said, my organization seems to be gun heavy. Least they were until I started working there. I think the chief would be happy to have me leave with how much I fight him, but he knows I have more knowledge than he does about the universe.

[ helen offers a smile at that. ] Then I think you and I will get along quite well.

[ she pauses, though. really, it would be a good idea to tell martha. if something were to happen to her... someone other than nikola would need to know. ]

If you and I are to work together, there's something you should know. My blood is a little different from a normal human's. Just in case something happens to me, I don't want you to be alarmed.

[Different isn't new. Martha's seen Time Lord blood often enough. Still, there's more to it than just that she thinks from the sound of Helen's voice.]

What do you mean by different?

[She asks very matter-of-factly. Because Helen's right, she does need to know.]

It might not even turn up in a normal scan, but there's another blood type, a difference in my genetic make-up. It's what we, in my line of work, call an Abnormality. Mine happens to be longevity. For all intents and purposes, I am entirely human, but if anything should happen to me... I felt you should know.

[ it isn't something she tells just anyone. it's a mark of trust. hopefully this won't end badly for either of them. ]

OK... something that probably won't show up but that gives you longer life. Can you accept regular O- blood if we need to give you any?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lifelines
2013-07-09 10:51 pm UTC (link)
It would show up in a DNA scan or a blood-tissue scan. We don't have that technology in the clinic so far, but if it ever turns up or the wardens do something... at least you've got a warning. [ it's better than nothing at this point and she'd rather have martha know ahead of time than be caught by surprise. ]

I can. I've been in hospitals plenty of times with no ill effects. I've no idea what my blood might do to anyone else and I'd rather not find out the hard way here.

OK, so no blood transfusions.

[Martha marked it down in Helen's file so she'd remember.]

There's nothing to note about my blood, or anything else really. I'm pretty normal human. I did spend a few years traveling back and forth in time and space, but it's not done anything to my blood.

[Because she'll just slip that in as though it were nothing really.]

I definitely won't be donating blood, but receiving transfusions should be fine.

[ time and space? well then. ]

That sounds like something I'd ask about if we weren't buried knee-deep in paperwork. [ meaning that's in the back of her mind, something for another day. ]

[She smiles.] It's a good story. I'm sure we'll have plenty to say. In the meantime though, I should just show you...

[She rolls up her sleeves finally, revealing the stitches] I was attacked by a dog.

[It's definitely bigger than a dog's paw... any trained medical professional can see that. In fact, the scratches look... wrong.]

I'm going to need the stitches out soon... a few more days or so. If you wouldn't mind doing so when that happens, I'd appreciate it.
