[Rose can be found sitting in the middle of the pet cafe. Despite the fact that she's got a passel of kittens crawling over her, one on her shoulder and is cuddling one in both hands, she looks miserable. She's obviously been crying a lot and fairly recently. There's a definite pout & mope sort of expression to her face. When she speaks, her voice reflects her expression.]

Doctor's gone.

I was thinkin' 'bout gettin' a kitten.

[Before he left actually, but she thinks it's an even better idea now.]

Call him Doctor. Maybe John Smith or Oncomin' Storm. Y'know. Somethin' like that.

He's there within a few minutes, sliding down to sit beside her. Apart from the soft kiss he presses to her forehead, he doesn't bombard her with affection, just scoops up a kitten and cuddles that instead.

"So, have you decided which one you want yet?"

Rose can't help the fresh wave of tears that crush her when Jack arrives. She's still attempting to hold it all together though. She bites her bottom lip, holding her breath for a moment until she thinks she can talk. In the end, she really can't so she just reaches out and picks up a fluffy ginger cat, holding him up.

"He wanted to be ginger." The words are a croak amid her tears.

There's something heartbreaking about Rose crying that makes it impossible not to cry with her. And he's crying for her, not himself, because the Doctor who was here? That was her Doctor, not his. His Doctor was the one with the ears and the leather jacket and he's pretty damn sure he's never going to see him again, which is probably a good thing because it's allowed him to move on. The Doctor who was here, part-Doctor, part-Donna, that was Rose's Doctor and he can't imagine what it's like for her losing him. Especially when he knows she's had to go through this before.

So like her, he lets the tears fall, because he's got no choice, but he carries on the conversation, even managing a watery grin at the choice of a ginger kitten. "It's a good choice," he agrees, letting his own squirming cat go and reaching across to stroke the ginger one.

He was the Doctor that Rose was supposed to get to spend the rest of her life with. It was the redeeming factor to this place. She had to be here the rest of her life, but she was going to get to spend it with her Doctor. Now, she wasn't sure how she was going to spend her time. She'd try harder to get out, try harder to figure out a way out of these walls.

She nods at Jack's words, leaning into him and resting her head on his shoulder. "We'll be okay."

What she meant was that she'd be okay. Jack had already learned how to survive without the Doctor.

	As she leans into him, giving in to the need for comfort, he finally slips his arm around her, squeezing her firmly. It's not much, he knows, but it's all he can give. 	It's good though. It's exactly what Rose needs right now. In return she slides an arm around his waist, wedging the kitten between the two of them for the most part. "REad him the riot act when he shows up again." She assumes the Doctor will come back for her, because if she can't get to him, that's what he's supposed to do. Right? And if the Doctor abandons her like he abandoned Jack, then not to worry, Jack will get her out of here somehow. Eventually.

"Apparently he does that a lot here?" It's what he's heard, anyway. "Doesn't hang around for long, but keeps on coming back?" He chuckles, warm and affectionate. "Mind you, that's him all over, isn't it? Can't make that man stay in one place!"

	She doesn't like to call it abandonment. She prefers to think that she got lost, but in the end, there's not much difference. She believes he will get her out of it though. She trusts Jack implicitly. "Yeah, pops in and out like it's his personal universe." She's actually smiling a bit through her tears now. "Don't know why we expected any different." "Sounds like a plan to me," she smiles back at Jack, glad to have him there and glad for his words whether he believes them or not. Sometimes pretending is the best option. "Sides, me and a buncha military guys figgered a way outta a sealed universe. Ought to be able to figger out a way here with lots smarter blokes." She nudges him lightly with her shoulder as if to say 'like you'.

He chuckles, squeezing her against him. "Oh well, yeah, if your Torchwood boys could manage that over your side even without me around - surely we can find a way out of here!"

He lets go of her to dive away after a kitten who's trying to escape and brings it back to the little pile she's got in front of her. "Maybe you should have this one. Looks like he shares the Doctor's love of running away!"

Jack stares for a moment, and then laughs bitterly. “Oh, that’s just so like this place, isn’t it? Even the pets aren’t allowed to be together! What, are they scared they’ll breed or something, even if they’re the same sex? Hey, maybe we could get them some blue bands to make it ‘legal’!”

…Sorry Rose. You’ve hit on a bit of a sore point with him there.

He could congratulate himself on distracting her from the Doctor if he wasn't so preoccupied with Ianto and what the hell was going on with him and Martha and – well. What the hell was going on between him and Jack as well.

On the other hand, he's still Jack and that makes him instinctively reluctant to admit there's anything wrong with his love life, even to Rose. Or perhaps especially to Rose, since he wants to protect her from… just about everything.

So he blinks at her a bit and says glibly, "Who says there's anything going on with Ianto?"

He's not shrugging off that arm around his waist, though.

Which... is probably a mean thing to bring up considering the Doctor's disappearance so soon after getting blue-banded to Rose, but he needs to distract her from this line of questioning somehow! 	Rose doesn't wince or shy away from the subject. She hasn't actually thought much about the blue band that's around her wrist and means absolutely nothing now. "Sometimes we settle for what we can have insteada what we want." She did it for years with the Doctor. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)
