HISTORICAL SERIAL KILLER — Andrei Chikatilo
Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer, nicknamed The Butcher of Rostov, The Red Ripper, and The Rostov Ripper, who committed the sexual assault, murder and mutilation of a minimum of 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in the Russian SFSR. Chikatilo confessed to a total of 56 murders and was tried for 53 of these killings in April 1992. He was convicted and sentenced to death for 52 of these murders in October 1992 and subsequently executed in February 1994.
Chikatilo was known by such titles as The Rostov Ripper and The Butcher of Rostov because the majority of his murders were committed in the Rostov Oblast of the Russian SFSR.
Chikatilo committed his first documented murder in Shakhty, a small coal mining town near Rostov-on-Don. On 22 December, Chikatilo lured a 9-year-old girl named Yelena Zakotnova to an old house which he had secretly purchased; he attempted to rape her, but failed to achieve an erection. When the girl struggled, he choked her and stabbed her three times in the abdomen, ejaculating in the process of knifing the child. In an interview after his arrest, Chikatilo later recalled that after stabbing Yelena, the girl had "said something very hoarsely", whereupon he strangled her into unconsciousness before throwing her body into a nearby river. Her body was found two days later.

PSYCHOLOGY — Sexual Sadism
The essential feature of sexual sadism is a feeling of sexual excitement resulting from administering pain, suffering, or humiliation to another person. The pain, suffering, or humiliation inflicted on the other is real; it is not imagined and may be either physical or psychological in nature. A person with a diagnosis of sexual sadism is sometimes called a sadist. The name of the disorder is derived from the proper name of the Marquis Donatien de Sade, a French aristocrat who became notorious for writing novels around the theme of inflicting pain as a source of sexual pleasure.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , also known as the DSM , is used by mental health professionals to give diagnoses of specific mental disorders. In the 2000 edition of this manual— the Fourth Edition, Text Revision, also known asDSM-IV-TR — sexual sadism is listed as one of several paraphilias . The paraphilias are a group of mental disorders characterized by obsession with unusual sexual practices or with sexual activity involving nonconsenting or inappropriate partners (such as children or animals). The paraphilias may include recurrent sexually arousing urges or fantasies as well as actual behaviors.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
The first thing to remember when it comes to sexual sadism is that it's not always linked to criminal behavior. The disorder itself can have enough of an outlet through fantasy and roleplaying and it is only when it progresses from that fantasy that we can discuss a sexual sadist in the context appropriate to this class. It's also worth mentioning that we'll only be evaluating sexual sadism when it is an element of the rape or murder itself and not suspects who enjoy sexual sadism but don't include it as an element of the crime.
When talking about sexual sadists, it's important to remember that it's not inflicting pain or even the sexual act that is important, but rather the feeling of complete control over another human being. It's fulfilling the fantasy, which is why sexual sadists predominantly seek out strangers as their victims although they still stay within their preferred type, as we discussed in the previous lecture on victimology.
It's also not uncommon for sexual sadists to have started as serial rapists only to escalate to murder when that no longer satisfied their needs — they tend to be unable to achieve sexual gratification through what we would call normal means and it's not uncommon for them to be impotent. In some cases this shows through in their preferred method of murder, as the act of stabbing gives them an emotional release equivalent of the physical release they would otherwise acquire from penetration they're no longer capable of doing.
