it's possible, yes, that the wardens could mischarge someone— they have, of course, been known to charge inmates for crimes they would have committed in the future, but that is different. there has never before been such a glaring error in this area, and he doubts that this fellow is an exception to the pattern.
he "swares?" he's "being honest?" piter has heard that many times before, sobbed from lying mouths twisted in agony. yes, it's possible that he's telling the truth, but a murder charge is not one made on a whim. there are many possibilities— but the most interesting one is the one which makes piter doubt this man. ]
