◎ CHAPTER 1: TAIL OF THE MALTESE PUPPY ◎
[Do not attempt to adjust your television Network monitor. For it is Puck who controls the vertical and the horizon. The loud and the soft. Even the contrast...which is why, whether by chance you happen to catch her over [video] or--surprisingly, even in person ("[Action]")--Zatanna will be appearing in the following outfit, only black and white with a particular theme music seemingly following her around everywhere she goes. Along with a melodramatic 4th wall narrative monologue that isn't supposed to make much sense.]

[That's right; we're going full-on film noir here, baby.]

[She sits at a desk. Well, more like lounging at a desk, with her feet propped up and her (way cool) fedora tilted down over her eyes. Waiting. The simmer heat is relieved only by the crack of a window behind her, and the slow rotating blades of an old ceiling fan.]

Oh, sure, it looked like I was takin' a snooze. But crime never sleeps, and I was already doin' some hard time as it was. Shut up, that totally makes sense. No, I was waitin'. Waitin' for a day that would never come. Or so I thought.

The Maltese Puppy, they called 'em. I called him Robin Jr. Long story. No, I'm not explaining it. Point was, he was missin'. And there was only one person who could help me get him back. Answer questions that needed answerin'. Such as...

[Here, Zatanna lifts up the rim of her hat with one hand, eyebrow raised and looking far more amused at things than she probably should be.]

Do I get to keep the hat when this is all over with?

[Head tilting to the side. Huh...?]

Okay... I'm officially confused.

She said she was confused. Of course. Why wouldn't she be? In truth, wasn't everyone under the dome confused in some way?

[Zatanna offers a shrug as the voice over silences itself.]

Just go with it.

That's what I'm doing.

[A little amused, despite the lack of understanding. She'll indulge it, either way.]

All right. So what about this Maltese puppy?

The Maltese Puppy. Envy of--

Oh, can it up there, would you?

[She shoots a slightly glance of annoyance to the ceiling. When the voiceover does, indeed, 'can it', the silence is followed by a roll of the eyes. She sits up a bit straighter in her seat.]

My dog's gone missing again. Which means either somebody took him to go along with the whole 'detective' thing we've got going here...or I need to get a new window, because he keeps getting out on his own. Personally, I'm leaning towards the former.

What the hell?

Was this hell? Or was it heaven? ...yeah, definitely not Heaven. But maybe not hell, either. Hell would've left me all alone, and I wasn't alone. Not anymore.

[Zatanna glances up to make sure the voiceover was done before answering:]

What? You've never seen a detective flick before?

Yeah, but I've never seen someone literally turn into one. And my inner monologues have never started coming from the sky. I hope.

So, uh, there's a missing dog?

Eh, I've seen weirder.

Yeah. Mine. This isn't the first time he's disappeared on me, so I'm not too worried. [Yet]

Excuse you. Like this is easy.

[She glances upwards in a 'really?' fashion]

I think it's supposed to be some sort of movie reference. Like the Maltese Falcon.

Ahhh, I get it. So you're Humphrey Bogart.

Well, if you need help with the dog, I can keep an eye out for him. How old is he?

Mmm...last time I checked, I was still me. Just with the color turned off.

[In other words, she's fully aware of the fact that weird things are happening, and just doesn't particularly care.]

Less than a year. I don't know his exact age; it's not like the Pet Cafe kept records of anything. But he's still a little puppy. My guess? About five or six months'

[A shrug]

I don't make the rules.

If I were the type, I'd give you some speech about you can be whoever your want to be or whatever...but I think that's pretty cliche, even for an old school detective flick.

I think that would be better if you were a family-friendly inspirational movie about an underdog sports team that heartwarmingly overcomes the odds to win the big game.

But I appreciate the thought.

[ Peggy is exceedingly amused ]

I suppose if you like it you can keep it. Does it hold some kind of sentimental value?

[ of course, Peggy doesn't see the Maltese Puppy set-up behind Zatana. She just sees Zatana sitting on a candied mushroom ala Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and having the time of her life. ]

[info]notbabymagic
2013-03-03 04:48 am UTC (link)
Not particularly. I just think it looks cool.

[At this point, does it even matter who sees what? At least Zatanna is well aware that shenanigans are afoot. Shenanigans that had drained the color from her face...and arms...and clothes...and the entire scene around her. Good thing she looked good in black.]

[ she could disagree, but she won't ] Then I see no reason you can't keep it, or find one in it's likeness. It seems a bit silly though, to wear hats in this place. IT barely even rains.

[info]notbabymagic
2013-03-03 04:59 am UTC (link)
Rain has nothing to do with it.

I might not be an expert, but a good hat can always make an outfit. My dad's tophat back home is practically legendary.

[info]pure_confidence
2013-03-03 08:30 pm UTC (link)
[ she can't deny that fact, but she's always been a rather practical kind of girl. ]

Was it a few inches too tall?

[ what else could make a hat legendary? Or perhaps it was covered in bows? She's seen far worse on the dandies in her grandmother's age. ]

Then what made it legendary, if you don't mind the question. It does sound like there's a story there to tell.

[info]notbabymagic
2013-03-10 09:29 pm UTC (link)
I'm not really sure, honestly. It might be one of those symbolic things.

Basically, my dad's world famous. Doubly world famous, actually. [Because of his career and role in the Justice League, but she doesn't need to specify that. She just lets most people assume its the prideful over-exaggeration of his only daughter.] And, somehow, his hat became his trademark.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]pure_confidence
2013-03-15 03:48 am UTC (link)
[ her lips twitch up in a smile ] I see. And sentimentality often plays a role in legends. And am I to assume the daughter is soon to follow in the father's footsteps?

[ Peggy nodded ] I still see no reasons why we cannot master the details of a trade however. Unless of course you truly believe you'll be here forever?

[ although that should give one even more reason to do so. Especially when it's following in a parents footsteps. Even the tiniest peace of the past can be a comfort. ]

Yes, it does seem to be a rather fickle prison sentence. Either one is here for a handful of days or you're destined to stick around for the long term. As near as I can see, there's no rhyme or reason for it.

[ although most of everything here has no rhyme or reason for Peggy. The technology included. ]

[info]notbabymagic

Someone suggested we're not actually prisoners. That we're more like social experiments or something.

[It would explain a lot.]

I'm afraid I can't disagree. If they wished to gain information from our incarceration, the means and tools are certainly here. The question, I suppose, is on what are they gathering information?

It certainly cannot be on our hardships; they provide everything for us.

[Shh, don't give them any ideas]

Probably so they can take it away when they feel like it.

[ if computers are as intelligent as everything Peggy has read them to be, they certainly need no help to her. ]

That would be a suitable punishment for going against their will. Much like a mother with her child.
