[ Today, John's spending most of his day here. He finds himself a little hungrier lately and he likes Sam. He also likes Sookie and that other waitress Jessica is not bad to look at. Come to think of it, none of them are. He feels aimless and maybe tomorrow he'll be productive - whatever that means in a place like this.

But, today he's just sitting at the bar. Come chat with him. ]

[She has more important things to worry about. People she loves. People who love her. Not yet another guy who broke her heart a lifetime ago, among a variety of other horrible things.]

About as well as you'd expect.

[Things are...complicated. It hasn't escaped her that she's the second person he's loved that has become a vampire.

At least she didn't do it willingly. If that's even something to be happy about.]

[ positive is rarely so pure and simple. elena would like her disliked, estranged uncle back. she'd like her family. she'd like trust, but trust doesn't come easy, and having family back is a little good to be true. maybe a part of her is waiting for the catch, or rug pulled out from under her. damon was right about one thing; even if they're here forever, the loss and pain doesn't stop.

Then I can meet you in an hour. [ there's nothing particularly warm about elena's tone, but it's not cold either. she has agreed. she's said yes. it's a first step, and one she's gonna have to take to get anywhere with john. she told him once before he died -- before she did, that she wanted to learn not to hate him. (she doesn't hate him.)

she shows up a little earlier than she'd said, slowing to a stop a few feet away from his booth. she doesn't say anything first. ]

[ you're seriously going to place the blame on isobel? is the question that occurs to elena. she doesn't voice it. she knows where that question is coming from, and it's nowhere helpful to herself.

this is about the benefit of the doubt. right? (or suspending disbelief long enough for proof.) ] I don't think I want to listen to you explaining the past to me. [ it would only be for his benefit right now.

so. ]

You gave your life because you loved me. You said you would leave town because you didn't want to hurt me. You put Jeremy in danger, you were working with Katherine, and there is so much hate in you for things you don't understand.

[ but. ] But I know why you did those things. I don't hate you, John. [ she doesn't. this isn't about hate. it's about trust. ] So why don't we just start by getting to know each other.

[ he's bad at this. she's right about the past. it won't get them anywhere. she'll never hear what she wants to hear. it will always hurt. and he will always adjust the facts. because he's not proud and he did bad things and yes, elena, he had isobel asking if he could ever really see himself as a father. he was blind with love for isobel. he did what she wanted. years later, he still did what she wanted.

he pauses, closing his mouth, realizing they need another avenue. ]

Isobel kidnapped Jeremy. That wasn't me. [ he hadn't been happy about that. ] I was working with Katherine. [ no, for, but like he can admit that to himself. ]

Okay. [ that's a good start. ] Let's get to know one another.

[Bars are great for surveillance and recon. Always tons of people milling about to blend in with, and people never think twice about a guy who's hanging out for a stretch of time. Not to mention liquor lowers inhibitions and gives a good taste of what's underneath the social conventions.]

[Plus, lots of easily improvised weapons. Michael's rather hoping to avoid unpleasantness, but as it tends to find him that's always a consideration.]

[He scoots into a seat at the bar and orders a beer, then lifts his glass in the general direction of -- not exactly at -- the guy sitting close by.] Here's to prisons that serve booze. [He's still a little banged up -- healing head wound, bruise on his left arm. All the apparent reason in the world to drink.]

[ Jonathon is - well, he's in a state because he's just had lunch with his daughter and that was. And the narration is staying vague because whether it went well or it didn't, it was still lunch. So, when he glances over and sees the toast, he raises his own beer. ]

I'll drink to that. [ And he is drinking. But, he takes a swig. ] There's a two drink minimum, however. Our wardens don't look highly on drinking to excess.
