His fingers curl around hers a bit, holding her hand in gratitude. He appreciates that she doesn't tell him it's not his fault. That's something that he has to realize for himself and something that he may never realize. He also recognizes that she had to have gone through something similar, experienced some sort of guilt, in order to understand that. He just doesn't think this is the time to talk about it.
And he is incredibly grateful for the subject change.

Now she's always checking on my homework and getting onto me for skateboarding. She's afraid I'm going to get hurt."
