[ caroline didn't have to - there's nothing to make up for, is what she's thinking. that's why elena's expression sombers, but it's not in rejection of the gesture. because she gets it, she thinks. this is because they are friends, first and foremost - not an apology. her smile softens, and she makes work of opening it. ] Caroline...
