Kuroba Kaito was at the edge of panic. The heist had gone terribly wrong, and not in a way that could be fixed with a neat trick or a flashy escape. Nothing could fix this.
They had his picture. No top hat or monocle, just a perfect picture of his face.
Fuck.
He'd been taken by surprise when the police had involved the fire department. The firemen had used a water hose on him, using it to soak his glider so he couldn't escape. What no one had expected was that the water pressure would knock off both the top hat and monocle, leaving his face bare for everyone to see. After that he wasn't quite sure what had happened, just that there'd been the flash from a camera and that he'd gotten home.
He'd spent the night waiting for the police.
They never showed up.
So now he was going to school, of all things, feeling quite numb. He'd already decided to let them arrest him, then escape, but now he was wondering what was going on without actually caring. There was no way they hadn't noticed who he was, both Nakamori and Hakuba had been there. So why wasn't he arrested already?
Kaito entered the classroom, slightly surprised to be there already. He hadn't been paying attention to his surroundings. Then he was promptly hugged by Aoko, who was grinning like a lunatic. Kaito just stared. She of all people should be clobbering him right now.
"Have you heard?!" She almost yelled, sounding as happy as she looked. "They know who the Kaitou Kid is! They have an arrest warrant on him too!"
"Really?" He offered weakly, deciding she probably hadn't been told yet. "That's... good, I guess."
"It is." She declared, bouncing off to spread the good news. Kaito just went to his seat, earning a few pitying glances. Everyone thought he was a fan of Kid, so that was understandable at least.
Kaito felt truly miserable, so when Hakuba appeared next to him he was ready to do something really stupid, made even more stupid by the fact that the detective had to have been sent by the police to arrest him. Letting Hakuba do it would cause the least trouble.
"You truly have the most remarkable luck." Hakuba commented, sounding torn between amusement and annoyance, but mostly amused. Kaito blinked when the blond put the newspaper down on his desk and walked over his own desk, sending Kaito an amused look and motioning to the newspaper before sitting down. He was still watching Kaito, though.
Kaito looked down at the paper, noticing the picture of himself from last night first. He looked fairly impassive really, poker face still in place despite the soaked clothing and with his hair plastered to his face. Not bad.
Second thing he noticed was the picture of Kudo Shinichi.
What? Kudo hadn't even been there.
Third thing Kaito noticed was the headline, his mouth falling open and eyes going wide as he processed the words. He reread the headline to make sure he was reading it right, but nothing changed from the first to the seventh time. The words were still the same. FAMOUS HIGH SCHOOL DETECTIVE MOONLIGHTS AS THE KAITOU KID.
